Red Dog: A Novel (Slim in Little Egypt Mystery Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

Pitbull fighters, shadowy ne’er-do-wells, and murder mark Jason Miller’s wry, darkly atmospheric second novel in his Little Egypt series—perfect for fans of Frank Bill and Greg Iles.

One hot summer day, in his home in the southern Illinois coal country known as Little Egypt—a Midwest Gothic wonderland of barren vistas, sinister hollows, petty corruption, and deeply strange characters—the self-appointed “redneck detective” known as Slim gets a visit from a shady-looking pair who introduce themselves as Sheldon Cleaves and his son, A. Evan, looking to hire him to find a missing dog. As a miner with a reputation for “bloodhounding”—tracking down missing persons the police can’t find or won’t—Slim is accustomed to looking for people, not pets. On the other hand, he needs the cash to fix his air conditioner. But when he pulls the thread that leads to the Cleaveses’ red-haired purebred pitbull—and then the dognapper is discovered with his head blown off—Slim finds himself plunged into a world of underground dogfights and white supremacists. . .  all because he just wanted to get cool.

As bitingly funny as it is starkly violent,
Red Dog marks the emergence of a new, gritty voice in detective fiction.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Miller’s second novel certainly has the country environment nailed down with vivid scenery and realistic dialogue . . . Using a mixture of real town and fictional spots, Miller’s view of Little Egypt, in the southern third of Illinois, evocatively shows how a regional mystery can incisively explore an area.” — Washington Post

“In Miller’s funny follow-up to 2015’s Down Don’t Bother Me . . . Slim cracks wise, gives and takes beatings and insults, and gets just enough help to survive in this tale sure to please fans of light regional mysteries.” — Publishers Weekly

There is great pleasure in Miller’s way with words…and hats off to a devilishly clever plot. A nice mix of hard-boiled action and Holmes homage. — Booklist

“’Red Dog’ maintains a canny balance of weirdness, violence, compassion for animals and black humor.” — The Seattle Times

“Red Dog is just the right combination of mystery and cynical humor to captivate the reader until the last page. I can’t wait to read the next one! … F*cking fantastic.” — Julie Kedzie, mixed martial artist

“Jason Miller’s Red Dog is a gritty mystery that pulls the hat-trick of being as funny as it is intense. I read it in one sitting and would happily slip back into Slim and his daughter Anci’s world tomorrow.” — Steve Huff, author of Don't Go to Jail!: Saul Goodman's Guide to Keeping the Cuffs Off

“If you’ve ever wondered what happens to a Goonie when they’re old enough to buy alcohol, well, look no further than Slim.” — Keith Buckley, author of Scale

“Red Dog reads like driving a pickup with a lift kit at 80 mph down back roads, while listening to Mitch Hedberg and Steve Earle. Miller’s sentences explode from the page like they were dynamited out of bedrock; his dialogue and plot crackle with the energy of a Midwestern thunderstorm.” — Jeff Zentner, author of The Serpent King

“A seamlessly plotted mystery with a likable hero in a gritty world populated by meth heads, environmental activists, and ordinary folks just trying to make a go of it. Tim Cockey and Robert Crais fans who crave laugh-out-loud dialog will add this title to their to-read lists.” — Library Journal

Red Dog is violent country noir at its funniest--as if Tim Dorsey wandered out of Florida into Donald Ray Pollock’s white trash Knockemstiff, Ohio” — Shelf Awareness

From the Back Cover

Pit bull fighters, shadowy ne’er-do-wells, and murder mark the second novel in Jason Miller’s wry, darkly atmospheric Slim in Little Egypt series.

On a sultry summer night in the southern Illinois coal country of Little Egypt, the self-described “redneck detective” and former coal miner known as Slim is called upon by Sheldon and A. Evan Cleaves, a deeply weird backwoods father-son duo hoping to locate a missing dog. Slim is accustomed to searching for people, not pets, but he needs the bread to fix a busted air conditioner. And, after all, it’s a missing pets case. What could go wrong?

Things go wrong. When the investigation soon leads to the Cleaveses’ redheaded pit bull and a dognapper with his head blown clean off, Slim, his brilliant daughter Anci, and their extended surrogate family are plunged into a deadly world of subterranean blood sport, wanton murder, and one-handed white supremacists . . . and all because Slim wanted to keep cool.

As bitingly funny as it is starkly violent, Red Dog takes readers on one hell of a ride through the darkest heart of rural America as it is today.

Imagine FARGO (either season of the FX tv show), but set in rural southern Illinois with a cast of redneck characters who have nothing to lose. I like to imagine Billy Bob Thornton as Slim (our hero, rather than the villain) and then there's Slim's 13-year-old daughter, Anci, who is probably a lot smarter than you could ever hope to be. That's RED DOG. There are also dogs. Generally, they are not treated well in this novel because bad people do bad things. Our hero & his fearless friend, Jeep Mabry, are out to right that wrong. It's a wild ride in a place where bad things happen both above-ground and underneath it.

Jason Miller's RED DOG starts out innocently enough. Private eye Slim and his daughter/sidekick Anci are playing a peaceful game of scrabble. Anci, as usual, is kicking Slim's butt. They're both wishing they had enough cash to fix the air conditioner, which is sadly on the fritz.

There's a knock at the door. Slim opens it to reveal the Cleaves: a father/son duo straight out of DELIVERANCE. (Cue banjo music.) The reader is immediately presented with the sort of description that Miller keeps up throughout the book: "The older man was... basically a beer belly on legs. The younger one was so skinny he could have been a skeleton in a biology classroom."

They want Slim to find their beloved dog Shelby Ann. A man on the phone claims to know her whereabouts, and the Cleaves offer Slim $65 to get her back. Sixty-five dollars won't fix the air conditioner, but Slim agrees, and they shake hands all around. ("A. Evan's [hand] was like a refrigerated chicken's foot.")

Of course, nothing is as simple or innocent as it may seem. The man on the phone quickly ends up dead, the Sheriff is after Slim as a suspect, and every homicidal bad guy and redneck crack addict is soon crawling out of the woodwork, going after Slim, after each other and after characters we haven't even met.

It is not a book for the faint of heart. There are lots of guns, murder attempts, and dirty dealings. And there are more characters than you can keep track of without the aid of an Excel spreadsheet. But it's a heck of a ride, with humor, insight, and a lot of reasons to avoid southern Illinois.

That being said, what are the Top Ten Things That Make RED DOG a great read.

10. Those aforementioned descriptions. Here's another: A deputy with a face like mashed turnips brought me a telephone on a wooden stool. I asked him to dial it for me, told him my dialing finger had been hurt by the mean cop with the mustache. He chuckled about that some then showed me his own finger - not his dialing finger - before going back to watching the tube or strangling chickens..."

9. It's gritting and dark and action-packed

8. It's witty and funny and a fun read despite the horrifying antics of the characters

7. Great discussions of classic mystery writers, including why it would be a bad idea to hire Sherlock Holmes as a private investigator.

6. A faithful sidekick named Jeep. Think Spenser's Hawk, or Elvis Cole's Joe Pike.

5. Snappy dialog delivered in perfect Redneck

4. Miller manages to maintain the deeply dark, deeply funny tone throughout the entire book.

3. Characters you want to come back to: Slim, Jeep, and Anci.

2. An embarrassing prior episode referred to as "the thing about chickens. It is never explained. I need to know.

1. There's a book before RED DOG, and another book due out soon.

Excuse me but I need to update my Amazon wish list.

Darker and funnier than Miller's excellent first go around with Slim. And really... more can you ask for the second novel in a series? Red Dog is the Empire Strikes Back of redneck detective fiction. What stood out most, however was how often i'd pause at a turn of phrase that was fresh, honest and downright Twainsian in it's illumination of the human condition. Looking forward to book three and whatever else he's got cooking. Highly Recommend!

Miller's writing puts me in mind of Terry Pratchett, the same kind of gloriously crafted sentences and asides that sparkle with humor.

In his second novel, Jason Miller brings suspense, violence, and humor. Slim and Anci are on a hell of a ride, and you'd be well advised to jump on board and take it with them.

I started reading Red Dog and my first thought was that here is a book that is trying way too hard to be witty. I was having a hard time growing accustomed to Slim and Anci's banter, and was doubting these characters and their strange situation. I mean, what kind of private eye takes his 13 year old daughter to work with him? It took me a long time to buy into that one.

I hung with it and actually ended up liking this book quite a bit. The entire father-daughter relationship still felt more like a gimmick to me instead of an important part of the story, but the story itself was very well written, and I even began to enjoy the dialogue (once I became used to it). This is a violent, gruesome, truly redneck mystery, so readers should be warned. Animal cruelty plays a large role, and those sensitive to violence and language should probably give this one a pass.

The writing is top notch, and the story provides lots of unexpected twists and turns. I enjoy books that portray characters that are not entirely evil or good, but something in between. This book delivers that on every page. Red Dog is a solid mystery, and once you enter this redneck universe, you will no doubt be eager to return for the next adventure- just like me.
