The Daughter of Belgium: A Short Story from Fall of Poppies Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

An extraordinary short story from Marci Jefferson, author of Girl on the Golden Coin, about the fierce determination of one young mother to save her child, and her herself, as World War I comes to a perilous end.

There is only patient left at the Institut Cavell. After having her life ripped apart in every imaginable way by the Germans who have occupied Brussels, having to care for this enemy soldier is Amélie’s worst nightmare. But the note of recognition in the shell-shocked man’s eyes when she speaks makes her wonder. As whispers of rebellious soldiers overthrowing the Kaiser grow louder and louder every day, Amélie will have to trust in the man she believes to be her enemy and risk everything she has to fight for the promise of a new life.

Originally published in the moving collection Fall of Poppies: Stories of Love and the Great War, this e-book also includes an excerpt from Jefferson’s novel Enchantress of Paris, available now.

    This is a short story that takes place during the end of WWI and can also be found inside the multi-author anthology FALL OF POPPIES: Stories of Love and the Great War...

    Although I'm not fond of stories told in the first person, this was actually an enjoyable read that was both heartbreaking and thought provoking. While much too short for my liking it was still an engaging tale about the ravages of war as well as the power of healing and hope. Being a wartime story there is some violence and Amelie herself is not immune to these horrors. With the help of a German soldier however she will learn to face her fears for a chance at a new and brighter future...

    Length: The kindle edition ended at the 69% mark, location 581, and even taking my time took me no more than an hour to complete.

    I'm glad this is a short story because with all the eye-rolling I did while reading, my eyes would have fallen out of their sockets with a full-length novel.

    Here are examples that beggar belief:
    SPOILER!
    A) German soldiers took the time to blindfold Amelie when she was raped;
    B) Lars can speak multiple languages with perfect accents;
    C) Amelie just happens to run into someone (Matron Cavell) who was in the position not only to care for Amelie, but provide her a perfect place to hide out for a few years
    D) a tendre forms between Amelie and Lars when the majority of their interaction involved silent exchanges of food trays END SPOILER

    I like the period setting of the story as I'm a sucker for historical novels, but Marci Jefferson wrote a fairly underwhelming story here.
