The Country Omega (The Downing Cycle Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 221 ratings

WHAT IF DESIRE REALLY DID HAVE THE POWER TO SWEEP YOU AWAY?

Omega Ethan Downing doesn’t want a mate. He wants to play his piano and travel the world. But with his acceptance to a prestigious musical conservatory hanging in the balance – and an ex who won’t take “no” for a hint – Ethan’s father arranges a bonding with an alpha neither of them have ever met.

Alpha Antonio Valdez’s life is perfect. He has the career, the money, the looks. In fact, he’d be perfectly happy never to bond at all. When his overbearing father arranges a bonding for him, he’s ready to find every excuse in the world not to go through with it.

One meeting changes both Ethan’s and Antonio's minds.

Too bad their fathers have also changed theirs. Now Ethan and Antonio have to fight for something they never even dreamed they wanted: each other.

The Country Omega is the first book in a three-part series set in the Omegaverse. It is a non-shifter, paranormal world in which mpreg is a possibility (but does not occur in this story).

boymeetsboyreviews.blogspot.com: “As an introduction to an omegaverse this was certainly intriguing, an interesting exploration of love and the expectations of family."

MMGoodBookReviews.com: “This story has a lot of different action packed with the perfect amount of feelings going around...When you start reading a story you can always tell which author puts their whole heart into what they are writing. This is one of those stories for me.”

About the Author

Penelope Peters has been writing since she was nine years old, and turned every school assignment she could into a story, which no doubt annoyed her teachers to no end. She's written plays, short stories, screenplays, poems, and fanfiction before turning to original writing.  She is currently at work on the next novel in the Downing Cycle.  When not writing, she's either cross-stitching, playing with her two sons, cooking for her family and friends, or pay due deference to the cat.

Penelope Peters wrote her first story at the age of nine, based on a dream she couldn’t shake. This is probably why most of her romances usually include the weird and whimsical. Penelope has been happily married to her college sweetheart for two decades, which is probably why her romances are practically guaranteed happy endings. Armed with her two kids, her husband, and her somewhat-trusty laptop, Pen’s traveled to more countries than you can count on two hands. (She’s very close to filling up that third.) Currently Penelope has returned to the land of her birth (somewhat reluctantly), where she is surrounded by trees, taco trucks, and her collection of counted cross stitch kits.

This book was such a pleasant surprise. The characters are extremely well developed, the dialog is smooth and realistic, and the prose is nearly flawless. Ms. Peters draws you into the story and paints an image before you that's vivid and feels so very real.

While it's a romance, it's hard to place it in other genres (like science fiction, supernatural, shifter, etc.). The world this story takes place in is an alternate reality of our own. It's seemingly exactly like our own, with familiar pop-culture references, and even references to current political happenings. The exception is that everyone has a slightly different biology. If you're familiar with shifter stories, it'd be similar to a shifter universe, but without the ability to turn into animals (and also without other "supernatural" aspects). People are either alphas (who have dominant personalities), betas (who are even-tempered), or omegas (who are more submissive and have the ability to bear children, regardless of their gender). Alphas and betas carry on like normal, but omegas are treated somewhat differently. In large cities, they never go out without being accompanied by others because it's feared they would be taken advantage of. Institutions (such as schools and universities) will not allow an omega to attend unless they have been fully bonded (think "married"), and bonding is carried out by legal agreements between the parents of the couple.

Hence the problem for 20-year-old Ethan. He has had his "puberty" and will not be allowed to enter the musical conservatory unless he is bonded. Since it's so rare for omegas to be admitted when they're older, even waiting another year will greatly lessen his chances of being a concert pianist. He needs to be bonded to someone who will not only allow him to attend, but will allow him to travel and perform. There's also the fact that Ethan is quite self-sufficient and does not see a reason why he needs to be accompanied everywhere, which is something that nearly anyone he would bond with would demand.

Antonio is 25 and has been avoiding getting bonded for quite some time now. His parents keep presenting candidates from the bonding agency, but he keeps declining. He does not relish the thought of having an omega dependent upon him all of the time. But this changes when he agrees to meet Ethan, and the two feel an irrestible attraction to each other. However, Ethan's father does not agree to the stipulations of the contract, and Antonio's father refuses to change it. Without their parents' signing off on the contract, there will be no bonding. To add fuel to the fire, Ethan's alpha ex is complicating the matter quite a bit (and no, not in any way that you would expect if you're thinking of shifter romances).

It sounds as if the problem is simple... Ethan and Antonio should just run away together. But this society is described so clearly and beautifully by Ms. Peters that one can see it's not a possibility. Bondings are legally made by the parents, not the couple, and omegas do not have legal protections without either a parent or a bonded partner. Ethan NEEDS to be legally bonded, and soon.

There are other profound, yet very logical, differences in this world. For instance, "mother" is the title given to the person who bears a child, whether male or female. Antonio's parents are alpha male and omega female (father and mother), and Ethan's parents are alpha male and omega male (likewise, father and mother). With this gender difference being universal, there is no concern given to the issues of being "gay" or "straight", which is such a pleasant change. With these changes though, what makes this story so delightful is that while this world is different, it still feels familiar because of so many references that parallel our own world. Things such as comments on the number of Republican presidential candidates or a person's similarity to a Simpsons character helps the reader empathize greatly. The similarities serve to ground the story, while the differences let it soar. And all of it is possible because of the wonderful expertise with prose that Ms. Peters wields.

I've enjoyed romance stories, and I've enjoyed science fiction and supernatural and shifter romances too. Penelope Peters has done a wonderful job of creating a compelling romance that's not quite like anything I've read before.

Neither Omega Ethan Downing nor Alpha Antonio Valdez wanted a mate. But one look at each other and they agree to the bond. Too bad their parents who seemed so eager on the union fall out about the contract. Can the infatuated men find a way to stay together?
The Country Omega depicts a society where omegas are protected and subdued to the Alphas. Their main goal is to be at home and look after their children. But Ethan is a very talented pianist and wants to continue studying, and become a soloist. In order to do so, he needs to be bonded to an alpha, otherwise he won't be allowed into the conservatory. Besides, there is Alan, his sort of ex, who is decided to claim him as his own, regardless the fact that Ethan is not interested in him any more. When Ethan meets Antonio, he feels immediately attracted, and finds a similar response in the Alpha. But Ethan's overprotective father is decided to have his son treated fairly, and he disagrees with Antonio's father on the contract. From that moment, Antonio begins a race against time to convince both their parents to sign the contract, but that's not the only danger for the lovers, because Ethan's ex is wiling to do whatever to claim him.
Told from a bouncing point of view, we move from Ethan's to Antonio's minds, which gives us a great insight of both characters and how they view their love story. The narrative is smooth and the story engaging, as it steadily unfolds the mystery surrounding Alan and Ethan's relationship, thus keeping the reader intrigued. Both Antonio and Ethan are likeable, but so are the secondary characters which provide a really endearing background for the love story, both Ethan's loving parents and siblings in their chaotic home, and Antonio's moody family with their explosive Latino blood. It was really easy to get emotionally invested with both characters, and feel sad the story ends. I would love to find out about Ethan and Antonio's live together. I hope to get a glimpse at them in the next book of this series.
Entertaining.

Taken advantage of at 16 by a much older Alpha whom he trusted but had been doing the wrong thing by Ethan. By the time he has finished school, Ethan, has worked out he can't trust the Alpha and just wants to escape and not be bonded an Omega. Ethan has to be bonded before he can continue his music career, so he and his parents start going through Alpha lists to find one that Ethan would be happy to bond to. Ethan and his Father meet with Hector and his son Antonio, with whom Ethan immediately feels an extremely strong connection. However, bonding papers must be signed before Alpha Antonio and Omega Ethan can bond. Ethan's Father Robert does not agree with the terms of the papers and refuses to sign them. He and Ethan leave and return home. Antonio wants his Father to change the terms on the bonding papers so he can be with Ethan, as he too feels the connection. Will Hector change the papers? Will Ethan escape the Alpha and find love with the one he wants and will he get to have his musical career?
This book pulls you in and keeps the attention right until the end.

I very much enjoyed the story and the characters, however the abrupt sudden ending was disappointing. It left up in the air possibilities unexplored and unresolved which very much needed to be wrapped up.

This author has a different take on the alpha and omega relationships of shifters for one they don't shift into an animal and two the body chemistry of the omega male is different. The story is really engrossing and hard to put down, the characters are likeable the story flows very well and builds nicely. Recommended. Try her other book The Omega Nanny that is a great read also. Book 2 Jake's story is due out in the autumn 2016.
