A Princess of Mars (Barsoom) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 223 ratings

Transported to Mars, a Civil War veteran fights to rescue a princess in this classic science fiction adventure story from the creator of Tarzan

Prospecting in the mountains of Arizona, John Carter is attacked by Apache warriors. Cornered in a cave, he thinks his life is finished, but when he emerges, the Apache are nowhere to be seen and the landscape is like nothing on Earth. John Carter has been transported to Mars—and the universe will never be the same.

The shift in gravity gives Carter superhuman powers of strength, speed, and agility. On Earth, he was but a man. On Mars, he is a god. And he will need all the power he can muster, for the red planet—called Barsoom by its inhabitants—is in the grips of its own civil war. To save the legendary Princess Dejah Thoris, Carter must defeat legions of giant, four-armed green barbarians and travel thousands of miles across a landscape populated with monstrous flora and fauna.

The first volume in Edgar Rice Burroughs’s beloved Barsoom series,
A Princess for Mars is one of the wildest and most imaginative tales ever told.

Praise for Edgar Rice Burroughs
“Burroughs is probably the most influential writer in the entire history of the world.” —Ray Bradbury

About the Author

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) worked as a cowboy in Idaho, a gold miner in Oregon, a railroad policeman in Utah, and a department manager for Sears Roebuck in Chicago before achieving lasting fame with Tarzan of the Apes, the first in a series of novels about a man raised by giant apes in the African jungle. Burroughs also created the iconic science fiction hero John Carter and was named by Ray Bradbury “the most influential writer, bar none, of our century.”

I recommended this book to one of my students and decided that I wanted a copy on hand. I looked through available copies and, unfortunately, most of the covers of available copies were not something I was comfortable handing to a student. I was so happy to come across this one with its beautiful cover art. Imagine my disappointment when I find that the formatting is horrific! So much white space with tiny font. I can't hand this to a student and ask them to read it! This was a complete waste of my money! (Offering a picture of the formatting with a "regularly formatted" document for comparison.

Don't buy this version of a classic story. Especially starting with chapter 15, it seems to have been translated, very poorly, from another language, so I'm guessing someone took a foreign language version and translated it back??? Bad grammer, mis-spellings, punctuation errors, lack of capitalization, incomplete sentences and simply incomprehensible writing. Who couldn't copy the test written over 100 year ago? Hard to imagine why, but this is unreadable.

To be written so long ago the John Carter novels hold the test of time as excellent science fiction. Burroughs created a fascinating world.

Conceived of GPS, autopilot and terra forming in 1912. Hollywood just didn't do this story justice. Still a great read today.

Solid book. It's not my first exposure to Burroughs, but it was my first exposure to John Carter. I found the beginning of the book to be intriguing, although I found myself skimming parts of it, mostly explanations of the different types of people on Mars. There are several great characters, and the end of the book is very, very tense and well-done, and very human.

I know this series is quite old, and that the modern movies "based" on them have been crap, but I really love them. They taught my young self about how to be a man, how to stand up for what is right, and how to treat women (with respect, always).

A wonderful escape back to the earlier days of sci fy. Definitely worth the time to reread this classic, I enjoyed it as much this time as the first, many years ago.

Contemporary readers might become bored with the early 20th century prose, but the first-person narrative of a mystical transport to Mars is ground-breaking science fiction. Get the whole series!

5 star read. All the elements of a good read (no explicit sexual encounters) with honour, savage justice, envy, war, list for life and love. I can't believe this is over 100years old.
