The Left-Handed Fate Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 136 ratings

Return to Nagspeake for a new fantasy adventure from the bestselling author of National Book Award nominee Greenglass House.

Lucy Bluecrowne and Maxwell Ault are on a mission: find the three pieces of a strange and arcane engine they believe can stop the endless war raging between their home country of England and Napoleon Bonaparte’s France. During the search, however, their ship, the famous privateer the
Left-Handed Fate, is taken by the Americans, who have just declared war on England, too. The Fate (and with it, Lucy and Max) is put under the command of new midshipman Oliver Dexter . . . who’s only just turned twelve.

But Lucy and Max aren’t the only ones trying to assemble the engine; the French are after it, as well as the crew of a mysterious vessel that seems able to appear out of thin air. When Oliver discovers what his prisoners are really up to—and how dangerous the device could be if it falls into the wrong hands—he is faced with a choice: Help Lucy and Max even if it makes him a traitor to his own country? Or follow orders and risk endangering countless lives, including those of the enemies who have somehow become his friends?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Navigating the dangers, depths, and shifting alliances of the high seas is always a tricky affair. Because Lucy Bluecrowne, Maxwell Ault, and Oliver Dexter (pirate's daughter, aspiring natural philosopher, and midshipman–turned–acting prize captain, respectively) are barely teenagers, what might have been merely tricky turns into an undertaking of epic proportions. With settings ranging from the tumultuous Baltimore harbor to the magical fictional port of Nagspeake, this sequel to Milford's Bluecrowne follows the quest for a mysterious ancient engine, a weapon that could perhaps put an end to war. Beautifully written, with careful attention to historical details, the story balances steampunk elements, mythology, and action with plenty of passion, jam, and jokes. The surprising conclusion will astonish and satisfy, despite more than one deus ex machina. Wheeler's textured illustrations add movement and lucidity, making the denser and more difficult to visualize elements of the plot accessible. VERDICT An unusually rigorous romp for lovers of steampunk, mystery, and swashbuckling adventure.—Katya Schapiro, Brooklyn Public Library

"This world has a seductive, fairytale quality – Patrick O’Brian’s Captain Aubrey series as seen through the lens of Hayao Miyazaki. . . "The idea of achieving peace through superior firepower is effectively questioned over the course of the narrative, but it is the human questions of honor, courage, and generosity―embodied in decisive Lucy, philosophical Max, impish Liao, and dutiful Oliver―that will leave readers cheering by the book’s rousing close." ―

AMAZING!
Wow. Just wow. What a journey w/Kate Milford this has been. She has, in a short time, become a favorite author of all time. I am blown away at her writing..the way she can tell a story..her descriptions, her characters, plots..the details! Right down to blending historical facts into her fiction, & all the research & work she puts into, not only making the story as great as possible, but as accurate as possible for the factual parts. Also, this world. How they can all be so connected to each other, but each feel like completely different books from the others. It isn’t a storyline that is just the same plot dragging on. Even if they were, I still would want more lol I hope we get a ton more from the characters in each storyline. I love them all so much. In this one we are back w/Lucy & Liao. We 1st met them in BlueCrowne. It’s a few years later. They’re on their ship the Left-Handed Fate on a new mission their Papa has taken on. It’s dangerous, suspenseful, & full of adventure. We have some old favs, & definitely some new ones too. This broke my heart, & then put it back together better than before. The ending was so beautiful & perfect I got teary. The love I have for all the characters is strong. Lucy is a strong girl, a natural leader, & only happy at sea. Just like her papa. Liao still has my heart. He couldn’t hurt a fly, even though his talent could bring enemies to their knees begging for mercy. Such a pure, gentle heart. This shows how awful war is, & the evil it can bring out in people..but also the good. People could build a machine that has the power to do anything you wish. Depending on who has that machine determines the beauty or the horror to be made. Good & evil. Good & bad. Love all of these books so much. CANNOT WAIT for the next book that comes out next month!! Beautiful cover w/absolutely BEAUTIFUL illustrations all through the book by Eliza Wheeler as well. Loved that. Highly recommend!💜

A friend pointed me toward Kate Milford's books, and I read the existing ones straight through and pre-ordered THE LEFT-HANDED FATE as soon as it was available. Milford's books don't fit into any established category, but define their own parameters. The world-building is exquisite and seamless, every character becomes an absolute favorite or a life-long enemy, and the writing and pacing are just perfect. THE LEFT-HANDED FATE may be the best yet, with new and subtle layers to the people and relationships we thought we knew. Read all the books in order of publication and know that you will not once be disappointed.

Kate Milford's books are relentlessly underrated. She is a fine stylist with a unique imagination. This book is the sequel to a book entitled Bluecrowne, which is only available on Kindle. Deeply appealing characters and spectacular old-fashioned and magical adventures abound.

Max and Lucy are on a quest to find the 3 pieces of a machine that are powerful enough to stop the war between England and Bonaparte’s France. Once they find the pieces, they will have to assemble the device. With the reluctant help of a very young British midshipman and Lucy’s half-brother, they are on an adventure of a lifetime. The French nation and the men dressed in black are trying to obtain the device for themselves. Will the 4 young people have the courage and fortitude to fight them off?

This magical book is a combination of historical fiction and fantasy. It has lots of action and adventure. So much so that the book is hard to follow, making it difficult in parts. This is my one complaint. The characters are interesting and engaging even if they are too young to complete such feats. I would recommend this novel to a middle schooler who likes either genre of fiction.

This book was provided to me as an uncorrected digital review copy by the publisher, via Edelweiss.

The Left-Handed Fate is a ship like no other; rumored to be faster than any other ship on the seas, and carrying a crew of the best seamen on the planet. Captain Bluecrowne, his crew, and his ship have been hired by Max Ault to help him locate the pieces of an ancient weapon; a weapon to end all wars. Unfortunately, Max isn’t the only one on the hunt for the artifact, and some of his competition seems to have the ability to appear out of nowhere. How does one evade an opponent who can show up without warning?

The Left-Handed Fate started out a little slow, and a little confusing, but the longer I read, the more I appreciated the story’s creativity and complex characters. At first, it appeared that maybe I had missed reading another book in the series, but it turns out this is not the case. In order to keep the book from being prohibitively long, Ms. Milford has chosen to condense certain events from the past and presents the beginning of the quest as something that occurred several years previous. The reader is caught up through memory flashes and dialogue between Lucy Bluecrowne, her father, and Max Ault. The book’s main characters are all children who have been pressed into situations that their ages should have dictated were impossible. However, the author has created characters who are not only capable of handling situations far outside what children their age should have been able to withstand, but she does it in such a way that it doesn’t seem strange or out of place. It is very obvious that Ms. Milford did her due diligence when it came to researching the customs and rules of seafaring folk from the Revolutionary War period. The sense of honor and duty she expresses through Lucy Bluecrowne and Oliver Dexter doesn’t come across as contrived, but rather seems like exactly what one would expect from children with their backgrounds and circumstances. I enjoyed this book, and would consider reading other books set in Ms. Milford’s Nagspeake (she has written a number of books with this setting, however this book is intended to be read as a standalone). I would recommend this book for kiddos 11 and older who enjoy historical fiction set on a boat with a steampunk vibe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable back-history to Green Glass House...which also stands alone
Reviewed in Canada on January 23, 2018
My 13 year old daughter and I have each read Green Glass House and now this book, which is a back story in the Green Glass House world. My daughter preferred Green Glass House to this, and I might have too, but just barely. I am a huge Patrick O'Brian fan (think 'Master and Commander') and I felt his influence here, something which the author readily admits; Lucy was Aubrey-ish and Max was clearly Maturin-esque. This story is an imaginative adventure in a world which is a mix of steam-punk, naval warfare, espionage, and supernaturally infused real-world happenings (some historical elements mix with alternative history). There are elements of mystery, adventure, dealing with loss, coming of age, broken families, trust and friendship, the ethics of wartime and international relations, and it is all told with with quirky and interesting characters and settings (some of which feel like characters too). Beyond just a really fun story that keeps the reader's attention, there is also thoughtful reflection (worked out in the narrative, not in preachy narration) about the too seldom considered and far too underestimated and unintended dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). This is a good read for ages 11-15, or for those who are still kids at heart. You don't have to have read Green Glass House to enjoy this story on its own.
