There will be uncertainty and uncharted waters. As you row your boat through the tides of life, keep in mind that all people, not just teenagers, are more open to outside pressures during trying times. Society as a whole is full of influences--good, bad, and indifferent. These persuasions come in the form of music, commercials, Internet, television shows, movies, friends, and coworkers. Never let bad influences rock your boat. For an anchor, you will need the character traits discussed in What I Need 2 Succeed. Christopher Columbus said, “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Be courageous as you launch your boat into adulthood!
Let’s face it, adolescent years were probably tough. You may have made mistakes, and your parents may have made mistakes. We’re only human. What is important is to let those mistakes go. They are in the past. Visualize mistakes as being in the palm of your hand and your breath as the force within yourself that blows them from your hands into the air to disappear. Certainly learn from mistakes, that’s essential, but it is useless to dwell on them now. How much better it is to concentrate on being the most successful adult you can be!
It is the hope of all who care about you that you develop the tools necessary not only to survive but to thrive in the world in which we live. You can make things happen in your life. Get busy, do something. Don’t let life pass you by!
You’ve read about influential people in each of these chapters. In either a large or small way, each one has touched our lives. We can learn from their struggles--in fact, the way in which they overcame their problems is what led to their success. Perhaps by seeing how they coped, you too can prepare for the unknown.
As time fades, what we remember about these famous individuals is the legacy they leave behind. They wrote quotes that define who they are and what they believe. Perhaps that’s why they went on to find fame and fortune--because they indeed understood the purpose for their life’s work. It was so stated in their quotes that each have written.
They were teenagers at one time also, and they faced many of the same struggles that you, too, are facing. Granted, you may have added pressures in today’s society, but they had even more obstacles to overcome. These famous individuals started out no differently from any of us. They were not or are not necessarily geniuses; instead ordinary people who did extraordinary things.
The common thread that can be observed is their work ethic. They had failures, but it did not stop them from achieving. They never gave up, and neither should you. They were independent in thought and action, and you should be as well. They never expected an easy life--it came to them only through hard work, dedication, and a belief that they could achieve.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2019This book was one that really resonated with me. It speaks to me on all levels. With a background in teaching as well, I feel very passionate about helping young people reach their full potential and I feel that this book does just that. This book allows students to take a glimpse into the lives of people who did amazing things to impact our world. We watch as they struggled or encountered hard times, but we also watch as they got up and kept going, never stopping until they reached success. These examples did wonders to inspire me as well, because I am currently in a stage where pursuing dreams is vitally important to me. However, the road hasn’t been easy and reading about these pioneers of the past really helped to shed light on the fact that I’m not alone. These people struggled, too, to follow their passions and although the world over knows them now, it was almost never an easy process. What sets these people apart is their determination, strong will, and belief in something greater than themselves. It’s just so admirable to read about these gems of society and every bit of me wants to follow in their footsteps as well. I found it hard to put the book down, it captured my attention in every way. This is an invaluable resource for teens and I enthusiastically recommend this title.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2018This is a great read for teens who want to know what it takes to succeed. It emphasizes character over skills and knowledge, although it certainly promotes following one's passions. It draws on historical examples, uncovering little known facts about well-known people. Like a kind, gentle mentor, this book offers great advice--sometimes repeating it more than once--for teens and adults alike. One of my favorites is Believe. Carter emphasizes throughout the book that success comes to those who are positive in many different ways. Check out this book for a friendly and organized way to help teens understand what it takes to succeed.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2016Linda Carter's book is about what it takes to be successful in today's world. She lists 26 character traits that are organized alphabetically. I found this book was good advice for any age, but especially teenagers trying to make their way in the world.
What is intriguing about this book is that you will find out little known facts about famous people that you might not have known before. That makes the book very entertaining and it teaches you life lessons that are the result of experience. Each chapter is about a successful person and some things are lol funny.
Linda Carter is an excellent teacher and I only disagreed with her on one thing. I think some popular music may be detrimental to your health. If you listen to lyrics you can easily weed out the bad stuff. So her brief advice on music - with that I did not agree.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2016My 8th grade students LOVE this book; we are on our second time reading through the book and are able to have productive discussions. My kids actually ASK to read this book because they find it motivational! Although it is geared towards tweens/teens, it is a great motivational book for adults as well. Linda Carter has gone above and beyond to provide teaching material and to keep in contact with me and my classes' progress. I strongly believe EVERY middle/high school student should be required to read this book!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2016This book is a solid foundation for teens and parents as well. This would make an awesome study for your teens and any teen group at your church. The example that Linda, the author has lead in her own life with children and grand children is an inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars This AINT NO BORING BUSINESS BOOK! ITS FUN TO READ.
I have been in business for over thirty years as an Executive and today teach Leadership and People Development to young people who will be our future leaders. As a father of three children who are now in University and or their careers, I found this book a fun read. Author Carter makes it enjoyable with so many stories and interesting facts of successful people from history and in each story lies a teaching moment for the reader. Some of the simple lessons I learned later in my career by the school of hard knocks were found in this book.
