"This is a thrilling legal adventure made even more so by Ellsworth's long career as a lawyer having experienced similar courtroom situations. From the Author
About the Author
John, always having a passion for the art of the written word, tried his hand at novel writing in early 2013. His first book, The Defendants, was turned upside down and inside out for a year of editing and creative insight. In 2014, The Defendants was published as John's very first work. Writing came naturally to John, and allowed him creative freedom and expression while still utilizing his law degree. He was no longer stuck inside the courtroom walls, but allowed to wander, run, and jump off of the pages of his books.
His early success bolstered his decision to leave a law career altogether, and in 2015 John left his practice and signed up for a lifetime of authorship. His success leaves him extremely humbled, as all of it is due to his readers and fans who keep turning their pages and picking up the next new book.

About the author

John’s page
John graduated from college with a double degree in accounting and English. He then taught high school English for two years before enrolling at Saint Louis University School of Law. Three years later, he took the Arizona Bar Exam, where John scored third out of 233 candidates, received his law license, and proceeded to the courts, where he spent 30 years defending and prosecuting. John attended the University of Oregon's creative writing program and finished first in his class.
In 1996 John became ill, and was forced to retire from law. The State of California found him to be severely disabled and propelled him to the front of its rehab line, essentially asking what he would like to study or learn to support himself.
John said he would like to study computers, thinking the job could be done from a wheelchair. Several months later, John had taken and passed four Microsoft exams to become a certified software engineer. Diploma in hand, John drove a mile to the Intel Corporation and asked for an interview. There were two: a personal interview and a tech interview. Two weeks later, John was hired and tasked with designing and building computer software capable of replicating the screens used by Intel workers in chip production screens of the enormous corporation. Soon, he was noticed for his re-designs of many of the systems and was eventually approached and told he was going on the road to troubleshoot Intel emplacements around the world. Which John did. This morphed into dealing with software languages and datatypes that normally didn’t mix.
After marrying and wanting to settle in one place, John returned to law.
In 2014 John retired from law and immediately set about writing a lawyer novel about a young attorney named Thaddeus Murfee. Thirty-eight books and eight years later, John still pounds the keyboard for a few hours a day and consults with various customers on secret tech issues.
Today John lives in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Sailing, scuba diving, sailplaning and gardening are some of John's happy pursuits when not writing his books. So far, John has also visited 94 countries around the world and says he'll be happy when he hits 100. John's advice for young writers: "Write."

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2019I enjoy reading the Michael Gresham series, but this book by far had the most shocking twists and turns.
Michael is hired by an old flame and fellow attorney Mira Morales when she is convicted of murdering her married lover. Mira is a Democrat running for the District Attorney position. Knowing that both of them are being framed by Chicago's finest cops, Michael hires an old friend/attorney Harley Sturgis to represent him.
The whole murder is a political move to get the Republican elected because he's in with the police union, and he refuses to charge any cops with crimes. Mira is the complete opposite, she prosecutes everyone, including the police. Michael just happened to be her attorney and pays for it with a brutal beating that leaves him with brain injuries and never wanting to practice law or leave his house again.
A must read!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2020......although I skipped second book, based on trusted reviews. Thanks to those who were forthright.
My governor has extended our stay at home quarantine for another month! I've subsisted on John Ellsworth for three plus months, so I think I can hang. Back to the book? Good plot, mostly. Michael might be a little too sensitive for his line of work. I met Marcel a few weeks back in another series, so he was already in my good buddy pocket. If course, I'm getting the next book: what am I going to do? Play golf without a cart? Go boating with no passengers?
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2025I've become a fan of this series. Excellent characters, well written. If you are an avid crime, who-dun-it, courtroom reader you will love the series, also. Forgive me, but I am a nit-picker. A few things I must mention. In the hospital, it was said that a heart monitor was attached to the patient's finger. No, that is a pulse oximeter that measures oxygen saturation, and yes,it does give a heart rate. But it isn't a heart monitor. And the respiratory "technicians" are actually respiratory "therapists" who have a plethora of duties and responsibilities. Somewhere "breathe" was misspelled "breath." Forgive me, but these things bug me. There were a couple of things about a resuscitation but I can't recall what it was. Anway, love the books and will continue to read them . Highly recommend !

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good but...
In this suspenseful, dramatic legal thriller. " Michael Gresham and "Harley Sturgis." In book 4, of this series, there are two lawyers, both representing themselves in the "first person," This took a bit of getting used to. IMO, otherwise, a very tight legal thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gresham & Ellsworth at their best
Fancy a whodunit that you know who did it but the might of the legal system is blind to the obvious, well not quite the obvious but the 2nd obvious. Things get so complicated that the defence attorney is called as a witness followed not too far behind by the existing District Attorney as another witness! The person on trial is the candidate who is in the running for the next vacant position of D.A. It seems as though Michael Gresham is looking for a law partner, to quote Morgan Freeman in the movie Deep Impact “... it only seems that way”
A damn good read …. that’s well written
