The Song of the Lark Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 319 ratings

A small-town girl becomes a world-famous artist in this powerful coming-of-age novel from one of the twentieth-century’s most celebrated authors

From childhood piano lessons to center stage at the Metropolitan Opera House,
The Song of the Lark is the poignant story of an artist discovering herself.

Fiercely independent and singularly talented, Thea Kronborg realizes at an early age that she is destined to leave her family and the frontier town of Moonstone, Colorado, behind. In Chicago, she studies with the city’s best voice teacher and begins the long and arduous process of mastering her craft. But ambition alone will not transform Thea into one of the world’s greatest opera singers—she must find the courage to set aside her humble origins and romantic illusions and fully dedicate herself to her art. In the ruins of an Arizona cliff dwelling haunted by ancient voices and purified by the desert air, Thea is inspired to embrace her calling once and for all.

Lyrical, authentic, and brilliantly constructed,
The Song of the Lark is a masterwork of American literature. It is the second volume in Willa Cather’s acclaimed Prairie Trilogy, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

About the Author

Willa Cather (1873–1947) was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed American authors of the early twentieth century. Born in Virginia, she moved with her family to the frontier town of Red Cloud, Nebraska, at the age of nine, an experience that profoundly affected her literary career. Her Prairie Trilogy—O Pioneers! The Song of the Lark, and My Ántonia—is considered one of the finest achievements in American letters, and in 1922 she won the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours, her novel on World War I.

Cather's writing is glorious, especially when writing about the landscape of the Southwest. This isn't her most popular novel, but it's considered to be the most autobiographical.
Thea Kronborg is a most interesting character, from a rather precocious child, to a woman who has grown into her gift as a famous singer.

I consider myself a serious Cather fan having now read six of her novels. But this was the only one I had a hard time finishing: Started well, good story early on about life in Moonstone, a small town on the eastern Colorado plains, and the growing up of Thea Kronberg, a musically talented young girl who finds her way to become an international sensation as an opera singer. Cather's descriptions of the setting -- the land, the seasons, almost anything that grows, walks and lives in this early Western environment -- is lovely writing. She does it well in My Antonia and O Pioneers too, probably better than any other writer of the early western landscape.

Her story progresses well too, characters well drawn. believable. Written in the third person (the all knowing writer), we also know what they are thinking and feeling, and many have complicated thoughts and emotions -- all very human.

But (and I hesitate to say this, not being a writer) the novel is over-written, if I may invent a term. In my opinion, up to a quarter of the story might be stated more concisely. The all knowing author spends too much time explaining, describing and interpreting her characters. Dialogue is there, and most of it good and revealing of the characters -- but some is not, at least to a modern day reader who finds conversations between Thea and Fred too allusive, too indirect to comprehend easily. And Fred's relationship with Thea is(at least to this modern reader) vague, suggestive and, until the very end, inconclusive.

But this is only Cather's third novel, and better ones are to come.

As a former professional ballet dancer and today a ballet teacher for adult beginners, this story kept ringing bells for me. Willa Cather's writing flows like water and makes reading effortless. I too went through years of loneliness, financial and artistic and personal struggles, but my childhood dreams have all been fulfilled and I often felt Willa had written my own story. For me, there's not a false word in this story. It went straight through my heart. BRAVA!

Beautifully written! Willa Cather's prose reads like a flowing stream of words . I loved following Thea's journey through life, the characters that join her on the way, and her strength and determination to excel in her gift of song. I better understand the heart of a true artist - always desiring to fulfill their life's destiny. But she only reached it because of her fellow companions who lifted her arms and heart when she weak. We are blessed to have Willa Cather as a voice from the past! Deedee Phillips

It's Willa Cather, so it's a little long-winded and a lot of pioneer stuff. I really enjoyed this one, mostly because I loved the Western (middle of nowhere Colorado railroad town) setting, and the main characters (Thea, her mother, and Dr. Archie). It's a long slow read, but worth the journey to get there.

Although the story was good, it felt like it was many times longer than it was. It was very slow reading. It was informative about an artist's life and dedication and it developed some nice characters, it felt like it was missing heart. I am glad I read it and also glad it is done.
