When ten-year-old Teddy Stride wanted to impress the professional snoop down the street, he opened his own detective agency. But when Teddy’s father goes off the rails, and his precocious investigative prowess fails him, he turns to the only firm he knows who might be able to find out what’s wrong before it’s too late: Clarke Lantham Investigations.

Clarke Lantham hates family squabbles, but he can’t refuse young Teddy. Little does he know that taking the case will send him straight to the heart of the biggest academic scandal in California history, and set him on a collision course with ghosts from his past that could jeopardize his freedom, ruin his career, and endanger the life of everyone he loves.

After a childhood in academia, J. Daniel Sawyer declared his independence by dropping out of high school and setting off on a series of adventures in the bowels of the film industry, the venture capital culture of Silicon Valley, surfing safaris, bohemians, burners, historians, theologians, adventurers, climbers, drug dealers, gangbangers, and inventors bred in him an obsession with staying one step ahead of the future springing uncontrollably out of the past.

To date, this obsession has yielded over thirty books and innumerable short stories, the occasional short film, nearly a dozen podcasts stretching over a decade and a half, and a career creating novels and audiobooks exploring the world through the lens of his own peculiar madness, in the depths of his own private forest in a rural exile, where he uses the quiet to write, walk on the beach, and manage a production company that brings innovative stories to the ears of audiences across the world.

This is the first I've read of the series. The opening was a bit dark, which scared me off a bit, but it settled nicely into a thriller after that. The detective craft elements were solid, the villain not incompetent (a real plus), and the characters very realistic. I particularly liked Lantham having some serious flaws and making mistakes that were consistent with his character. I'll be picking up the rest of this series.

Another contribution to sleep deprivation by J. Daniel Sawyer. My reaction to this book is formed partly by the book itself and partly by having read the previous six books in the series. What I like most in his writing are the flesh and blood characters, no Dirk Pitt or Jack Ryan's here, but rather protagonists of only slightly above average talents and prone to mistakes and neuroses. The Northern California settings come to life. My only real complaint about the book is the contrived plot-line in which Rachel's investigation merges with Clarke's and the kidnappings are unbelievably suppressed. Still, the underlying crimes are most interesting and Sawyer may be prescient. Probably not the best book in the series, but plenty good enough. I eagerly await next one.

I'm currently out of the country on vacation and before I left I loaded my Kindle with this book, a DeMille, and two Baldaccis. In my mind, Sawyer is in their class. I read this one first, and I'm glad I did.
