It’s a cute book. About half the book is recipes which I was a little disappointed about. But the weirdest thing was the smell! It smells like Vicks (that goo your parents would use when you were a kid and had congestion) or some kind of medical smell. It’s very odd....

There is a surprising amount of useful and helpful information in this little book. "Rice Craft" is all about Onigiri, which is sticky rice formed into shapes in the palm of your hand. Onigiri is snack food, but also a prime candidate for appetizers. Onigiri is a lot of fun, and it is easy to get creative with the shapes and tidbits that are tucked inside and placed outside. And Sonoko Sakai has a way of writing that sets a lighthearted tone for creating these rice treats.

Before you are even half way through this small gem of a cook book, you will be adding a sticky rice to your grocery list. Your biggest dilema will be choosing which rice to start with! Sakai lends a helping hand by thoroughly explaining the different rices that can be used for crafting Onigiri, plus the small additions that can be included via beans and grains.

She provides many recipes and even more helpful hints and suggestions. There are plenty of pictures to help explain the process.

It is a lot of fun gathering ingredients, planning shapes and forming whimsical characters. Great activity for children on a rainy afternoon; fun for a group activity, too. I'd rather have the kids building Onigiri than pinning the tale on the donkey at a birthday party.

Don’t Play with your food! And the cute cookbook, Rice Craft, will help you do just that! I remember watching Pokemon cartoons when I was younger, and I wondered what the characters were eating (“jelly doughnut” was the most frequent English interpretation). I’ve since learned it was rice balls, onigiri, inari, and other forms of sushi. This darling book takes a creative look at these traditional Japanese snack, adding cute and inventive illustrations and layout to their cute and inventive recipes! There is lots of text and photos to help explain how to make them, and they put the fun in fundamentals with an extensive “master recipes” section which is worth the price of the book alone. My favorite is the Smoked Trout Onigiri with Lemon, which would work well with leftover smoked salmon, too. My kids, fans of all things Japanese, are making these straightforward recipes on their own, folding in different ingredient combinations into leftover sushi rice. We’ve even started making our own inari by frying slices from bricks of tofu and then cutting them in half again to create pockets, then soaking in sweetened soy sauce. It’s all been delightful fun for our family, and delicious, too!

Excellent cookbook for anyone interested in engaging Japanese recipes. Truly a wonderful and sweet addition to my collection. I’ve given this cookbook as a gift too and it was warmly received
