Bride of Thunder Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

Betrayed by her husband, a beautiful Texas bride discovers the true meaning of faith, courage, and love in a Yucatán torn apart by warring factions.

Mercy Cameron carries on her father’s medical practice as best as she can after he leaves to fight in the Civil War. She nurses her second cousin, Philip, back to health, and the two quickly fall in love and marry.

When Philip returns after the hostilities are over, he refuses to live under Reconstruction and insists the couple relocate to Mexico, where Emperor Maximilian has promised free land to settlers. By the time Mercy and Philip complete the journey, however, the Austrian monarch’s last hope is to make a stand in the Yucatán. Disappointed and drinking heavily, Philip bets his wife in a game of cards, losing Mercy to Zane Falconer, owner of a distant hacienda, who needs a woman to educate his motherless daughter.

Reluctantly agreeing to teach Julie Falconer until she turns eighteen—ten years—in exchange for enough money to return to Texas with a sizable bonus, Mercy sets out with the enigmatic and ruggedly handsome Zane on a three-day journey deep into the Yucatán. At the hacienda, Mercy fights to win the respect of the sharp-tongued Julie and dares to dream that Zane’s ironic courtesy may one day turn into deeper feelings. But when Zane leaves the hacienda to help fight off invaders, Mercy first falls into the clutches of a gunrunning Englishman and is then captured by the Cruzob, Mayans who’ve been fighting a long war with the ruling mixed bloods and federal troops. From the brave and attractive Dionisio, Mercy learns Mayan lore and comes to sympathize with their struggle for freedom, all the while praying that she might live to see Zane again.

Rich in adventure and intrigue,
Bride of Thunder is a spellbinding work of historical romance from a bestselling and award-winning author heralded by the Denver Post as “a master novelist.”

This is one of my all time favorite romances. I was so excited to get it n kindle although I have several copies in
paperback. It's gritty and intense and so good! It takes place just after the civil war and the heroines husband wagers her off in a poker game. I have read this many times.

I loved the history of Mexico, after the civil war and it's ancient past, revealed throughout the book. This was often confusing if you are unfamiliar with the names of regions as they were called 150 years ago and 400 years ago and the Spanish names for these were hard to hold onto. The warring factions and the US, French and British involvement were all new to me. The beauty of the country, it's foods and customs were a standout features. But it had the bawdy feature of men falling instantly, and I mean instantly in lust with the main character. So much historical and intellectual detail mixed with sordid romance novel. I I almost put it down when I encountered the first example of this, thinking it was situational, It was pervasive.

Whoa, how do I even attempt to explain this saga of betrayal, kidnap, rape, and crazy times !?!?
The provocative cover artwork is not exactly true to the time period of this tale. This story takes
place circa 1867 so,the cover clothing is incorrect !!! but,still a heart pounding/exciting epic !
****************SPOILERS AHEAD***********************************************************

This is 364 pages so bear with me (and i am not explaining every detail)....in 1867,
a married woman named Mercy Cameron is SOLD to a rich man during a card game
by her immature, possibly homosexual husband Philip. The rich man is named Zane
Falconer and he has a mansion in the Yucatan peninsula. Mercy is beautiful and smart
(and is the most self assured and true-to-oneself-female I have ever seen) Mercy flat out
refuses to become Zane's,"mistress",instead asking to earn her keep by teaching Zane's
daughter as a sort of "tutor' (Zane is a widower). Zane is very attracted to Mercy but,is
willing to let Mercy alone and these three and other people in the household become
close and behave in the manner of an extended family. Now,looming in the background
is the complicated history of this part of the world:Mexico Mayans,Cruzob people,Latin
american religious beliefs and I mean this is a HUGE aspect of this book

In fact there is a glossary in the back of this book). The author did her research and did
it well readers. Now,getting back to the story, this nice little family relationship continues until the middle
of the book and bored me slightly where I thought,is this all there is ???
It made for a good fiction novel but then...Mercy is kidnapped by a strange, almost (gorgeous),
huge 'viking" type Englishman named Eric Kensington and it is from here that this book burns
up into epic proportions !!!!! This Eric guy wanted Mercy SO BAD here took her to his mansion
(of course he is rich) and had CRAZY SEX with her (it is described in almost rated X detail),wooo.
This was something!!! I have never been so relieved to find that sex and kidnapping would liven
up a story so much. Well,to continue,Mercy was no ordinary woman. whether right or wrong,
Mercy fell in LOVE with Zane when she was there with him and wanted no other and certainly
not Eric. Mercy could not get it through to Eric's thick skull that she would NEVER love anyone
but Zane. Eric is so enraged (?),he threatens to not, only keep her there, having sex everyday
to get her pregnant, but also to whip a man to death (every month)if she does NOT get pregnant !?!?
No I am not making this up. So,what is this smart, determined woman to do ??? stay with the
sexy, crazy blond viking or try to get back to her love,Zane ?
To sum up this book. There is A LOT going on with the historical background and that part is
very,"talky" . It is all about the history of that part of the world. I thought Zane was B-O-R-I-N-G.
The story only got exciting after Mercy was kidnapped and held prisoner as a sex slave.
I would say read it for that part of it---the crazy,love/sex part of it.

This story is hard to put down once you start. There a lot twists and turns as the protagonist is taken advantage of by an unscrupulous husband. The setting begins in Texas at the close of the Civil War.
