Review

"Beautiful to the Bone's themes of fantasy, magical realism, suspense, psychological drama and more . . . move the story along (with) a prickling sense of foreboding that travels across the pages.

The evolution of the characters and the strong, twisted and interesting plot . . . will appeal to all readers looking to get tangled in a murky drama . . . that will definitely stick with the reader after completion."
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (An amazing book; excellent writing, powerful story)

"I began reading Beautiful to the Bone in a hot bath. My whole world dropped away. It wasn't until Chapter Six, when I realized the bath water was stone cold, that I had to put the book down."

The story hurled me back and forth between jumbled, infinitesimal worlds and vast landscapes of varying ecosystems: literal, cultural, multi-generational, familial, psyche, as well as wound me through wild plot twists. There are SO many twists of language that are delightful (especially in contrast to the cruelty dealt by some of the characters that was portrayed so well.) Like all good artists and writers, after reading this book I can now articulate moments I had not even noticed before. Also, I left with the gift of having absolutely new perceptions of varying activities like (to name only a few): a taxi shook the air, the dead frame into which Harold swung, something domesticated that evaporated from my consciousness... and thousands more! And hmmmm, your sexy scenes were very provacative - I did not predict the main character, Eunice, would live in that galaxy for awhile.

Beautiful to the Bone is an outstanding novel by first time novelist PG Lengsfelder. I was looking for something to read, got intrigued by the title, picked it up and then was hardly able to put it down. It is the story of a young girl who grows into herself through pain, struggle and her quest to understand beauty. It is full of drama, suspense, supernatural twists and turns. The writing is superb, the character development strong, and the plot intriguing, twisty, well-paced. For anyone wanting a novel that is crisp, educational and entertaining, I recommend it highly

I was incredibly impressed with this amazing, beautifully crafted, and thoughtfully conceived novel.
I found it extremely difficult to remove myself from the unpredictable magic it presented. The characters, although complex, were realistic and provided interesting insights throughout their development.
The quests for love, forgiveness, understanding, and acceptance were intertwined with the most loving sensitivity by the author.
This book continues to resonate in my thoughts and heart. I so look forward to the sequel that has been promised.

This first novel exhibits an admirable control of the genre. The protagonist—and intradiegetic narrator—is an albino girl from a small Minnesota town who, rejected by her peers and mistreated by her family on account of her appearance, self-isolates to avoid unpleasantness. Obsessed with human beauty, as a scientist she later devotes much time trying to ascertain the genetic key to er whiteness. The author has researched that field carefully because his text contains data and references to actual scientific studies. The narrator feels beautiful only when swimming in cold northern lakes and rivers that are receptive to her body. She thinks of herself as a mermaid, feeling only in those waters cleanliness, strength, and freedom. Mermaids appear as a motif incidentally throughout the novel in the forms of a picture, a sculpture, a lover's tattoo, and female swimmers in a bar's aquarium. The narrator's awareness of her physical attractiveness, which surfaces slowly and intermittently in the text, is in constant tension with her not feeling beautiful. Compared with the characters with whom she interacts at home and in New York, however, who are coarse, selfish, aggressive, and insensitive, the protagonist emerges as beautiful because of her intelligence, her ability to absorb poor treatment without acting badly, her sensitivity, and her sympathy for others. his is both a psychological and a social study, first as an in-depth exploration of a marginalized, sensitive, intelligent woman whose inability to intellectually analyze her fear and desires is compensated by her detailed telling of her interactions with many different kinds of people. Secondly, the novel examines the cruel and ugly sides of social life among the working class of a small town and the professional class of a metropolis. The author effectively uses predominantly stichomythic dialogue to body forth his secondary characters' thoughts and feelings since the narrator is bound by the conventions of internal focalisation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Provocative and beautiful

I really enjoyed this book. The plot is quite different to anything I’ve read before and I was never sure where the story would lead me. The character of Eunis is deeply and richly drawn and I felt the pain of her need to pursue an objective understanding of beauty. The book is beautifully written with evocative language and genuine empathy for the characters. It was thought provoking and its exploration of beauty, and what it is, made me reflect on my own notions of beauty and the tendency I (and perhaps all of us) have to see beauty as only skin deep rather than what is at the heart and soul of an individual. An excellent read.
