Camaro Espinoza is "the deadliest female protagonist since Jon Land's Caitlin Strong and Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander" (Booklist).

Camaro Espinoza is a former combat medic whose past is shrouded in mystery. Having finally achieved a measure of calm and anonymity, Camaro receives a distress call from her sister Annabel. Living a modest life in a small town in California, Annabel has become trapped in an abusive relationship with a man named Jake Collier who threatens to make her daughter his next victim.

Camaro rushes across the country to defend her sister for what may be the last time. And Jake has a sibling of his own, an ex-Special Forces operative named Lukas who is every bit as unhinged as Camaro is uncompromising. For all Camaro's stealth and wit, she can only last so long against such a relentless force.

As a pair of federal marshals pick up the trail, and a bounty hunter with a debt to settle closes in, Camaro's smart enough to know that standing her ground is the last thing she should do. But if there's one thing Camaro can't do, it's walk away -- even with a freight train like Lukas barreling towards her.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Hard-boiled action...Camaro Espinoza, who did tours in the Middle East, is tougher than an army boot....it's deeply satisfying to watch her take out an animal like Lukas."―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

"A trifecta of triumph . . . A complex and compelling protagonist (coupled with richly defined secondary characters), authenticity of voice and vista, and resonant timeliness. . . . Camaro Espinoza is a name to remember, and readers will find themselves rooting for her despite the many liberties she takes with conventional law and order. Justice is in the eye of the beholder, after all."―
John Valeri, Strand Magazine

"Fast, violent, and starring a lead character with a private code, and to hell with those law books. . . . Like a good action hero, Camaro is solitary, vengeful, and fond of beer and motorcycles-a female 'tough guy' who defies stereotypes with engaging bravado. Hawken calls her 'a lean, mean thrilling machine.' He's nailed it."―
Booklist

PRAISE FOR
THE NIGHT CHARTER:

"Sign on for
The Night Charter, Sam Hawken's hot new thriller captained by Camaro Espinoza, a protagonist that'll light up the literary seascape unlike anything before."―Craig Johnson, bestselling author of the Walt Longmire mysteries, the basis for Netflix's Longmire

"The Night Charter is a heck of a book by a fine writer. Camaro Espinoza is a captivating heroine, whether shooting it out with the bad guys or standing, unflinching, in the face of the law. Drawn into this saga by a strong moral code and her own dark past, Camaro is impossible not to root for, and Sam Hawken's deft, assured prose keeps the pages turning--and your heart pounding--all the way to The Night Charter's adrenaline-soaked finale."―Owen Laukkanen, author of The Professionals and The Stolen Ones

"
The Night Charter caught me completely by surprise. In precise, neon-soaked prose, Sam Hawken launches a promising new series headed for the high seas of John D. MacDonald and the relentlessness of Lee Child. Camaro herself is a wonderful creation, an uncompromising heroine whose adventures many readers, including this one, will look forward to for many books to come."―David Morrell, bestselling author of Inspector of the Dead and Murder as a Fine Art

"
The Night Charter is a terrific thriller. Riding her Harley and settling scores, Camaro Espinoza takes us on a gritty, fast-paced adventure. Sam Hawken has produced a great riff on the lone wolf hero, a kind of female Jack Reacher."―Matthew Quirk, bestselling author of The 500 and The Directive

I loved the three prequel novellas, and the Camaro 1.1 novella, but wasn't so hot on the first full length Camaro novel. But this entry in the series combines the tight writing of the novellas, and the greater narrative possibilities of a full length novel. Best of the 6 stories, in my non-professional opinion.

In this volume, Camaro gets (another) call for help from her sister. This time she is happily settled with a new name, a new family, and a nice nest egg in California. However, her boyfriend is abusive, and demanding more and more money. Camaro's sister is terrified, and unable to end the relationship without help. Camaro, of course, rides to the rescue.

Enter the boyfriend's brother, a serial killer, who is being closely followed by a US Marshall, and a bail bondsman, having killed the Marshall's partner and absconded across the country, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.

Camaro is now in the midst of a war, where everyone is at odds with everyone else, and her innocent sister and niece are in harm's way.

From this set up, we get a ripping good story, which keeps the reader turning the pages right until the end.

The second novel in the Camaro Espinoza series somehow managed to ratchet it up a notch. The stakes are always personal with Camaro but this time as her sister needs her help.
Camaro is no one note action hero. A grounded woman who lives by a code no different than the samurai of Japan. Her adversary has his own code that brings him into Camaro's cross hairs.
Pick up this novel. You won't regret it.

Walk Away is a very appropriate title for this book. Camaro should have walked away from hunting Lukas, Way should have walked away from the hunt, Camaro's sister should have walked away from her relationship with Lukas that got this whole thing going, Camaro shouldn't have walked away from her father who then passed away. Maybe we should all take a lesson in learning to walk away sooner from some things. I didn't like this book as much as The Night Charter. I liked it better when Camaro was in Florida, on her boat, running her charter business. Hopefully she will be back in Florida for future installments.

If you like Jack Reacher, you will love Camaro Espinoza. Unless you are threatened by strong, take charge women. What more can I say? Lots of action, good story with a good plot. I have read all of this series now, and look forward to more.

Camaro is more real than in any of the previous books. This one starts, ends and goes again. You don't know what to expect next. Anxious for more!

I was new to Hawken, when I read this book, but I liked it so well, I ordered another by him.

Sam Hawken has just released Walk Away - the second book in his Camaro Espinoza series. I hadn't read the first, but Walk Away can absolutely be read as a stand alone.

Camaro? She's a former combat medic who knows how to fight. She never backs down or walks away. When her sister Annabel asks her for help with an abusive boyfriend, she's on her way across country without a second thought. After all, family is family. But that abusive boyfriend has family too. And he's even worse than his brother. What starts out as a simple warning off soon turns deadly - for a lot of people.

I loved Camaro! Who doesn't love a kick butt female lead? (Think female Jack Reacher) Hawken slowly reveals bits and pieces of the sisters' past. I wasn't too sure about her sister - she's 'weaker' if you will, and seems to have has a history of making bad choices and needing help to clean up. I really liked two of the supporting cast - bail bondsman Yates and Deputy Marshall Hannon. I hope to see Yates in a future book. But boy oh boy, Marshall Way is a piece of work. He's a loose cannon with a temper. Hawken has written him well - it's impossible not to have a visceral reaction to this man.

Hawken's plot is well conceived and things move along at a quick pace. Great short snappy dialogue to match. And lots of action. Walk Away kinda reads like an action film. And I can absolutely see it as a movie. I look forward to the third installment.
