The “Danish coziness” philosophy is fast becoming the new “French living” in terms of aspirational lifestyle books and blogs. There are countless viral articles comparing the happiness levels of Americans versus Danes. Their homes are more homey; their people are more cheerful. It’s an attitude that defies definition, but there is a name for this slow-moving, stress-free mindset: hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”). Hygge values the idea of cherishing yourself: candlelight, bakeries, and dinner with friends; a celebration of experiences over possessions, as well as being kind to yourself and treasuring a sense of community.

How to Hygge by chef and author Signe Johansen is a fresh, informative, lighthearted, fully illustrated how-to guide to hygge. It’s a combination of recipes, helpful tips for cozy living at home, and cabin porn: essential elements of living the Danish way—which, incidentally, encourages a daily dose of “healthy hedonism.” Who can resist that?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Throughout, Johansen’s tone is an embodiment of the philosophy: she encourages readers to appreciate the small moments, taking baby steps and savoring the ride rather than racing to the finish line. Readers interested in simplifying their homes and lives are sure to find plenty of practical recipes and suggestions here that they can implement immediately." ―Publishers Weekly

I love the cozy feeling abs winter so I love Hygge books. This was great and full of info for not just home but how to hygge at work and other places . Lots of information, well written and enjoyable to read. Doesn't read simply like a How To Book .

So disappointed to see the US release has a different cover than the original version released in Europe. The refinement is downplayed by the red and use of playful fonts.

The book is amazing and I cant wait to devour the content and bake my way through the recipes (wishing there were gram weight for baking, just like the european version).

I loved this book and felt cozy by merely reading it and visualizing the concepts. I first stumbled across hygge in November 2020 and instantly felt I needed more of this in my life so I started seeking out other books and information on the topic.
This book gave an overall understanding of hygge and included several recipes I plan to try. I would suggest it to anyone looking to bring more calm into their life and/or anyone interested in learning about other cultures.

I got this from the library first and loved it so much I had to buy it. I enjoyed the author’s focus on the outdoors, something often glossed over in other books on hygge, and her empowering take on life. She seems very at ease in her body, and her body positivity was bolstering and inspiring. Other books talk decor and downtime, which the author definitely covers as well; but I love how much further she took it.

I got the book because in this day and age I really wanted to incorporate more of the Hygge lifestyle that I kept hearing about. Unfortunately I ordered the book as soon as it came out and did not read any reviews about it beforehand, if I had I would have shopped around for other books on the subject. The book was lovely to look at but it really did not inspire me as much as I thought it would and I pretty much did all the things already, apart from fishing and hiking. For whatever reason I expected something a little different from the book, also not as many recipes for main dishes, I thought it would deal more with making your home comfortable and get together for coffee and easy entertaining, but I assume that is my fault.

I bought this book out of curiosity on the topic of Hygge, and I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this author writing style! I expected a very touchy-feely book but ended up with a very well grounded, down to earth take on the subject that was very enjoyable! Definitely, recommend this book to anyone on the fence about exploring this topic.

Beautiful book! I’m trying to incorporate some Hygge into my life and home without spending gobs of money...little things like clearing spaces, candles, lighter picture frames... These little things do make my home more cozy. But just reading the book alone makes you feel more relaxed and cozy. I really love the book and am sending to friends for gifts.

My book arrived on the estimated date and was barely used, if ever. Just one corner of the hardcover was a little bit bent and one page had the tiniest tear.
