The Awakening: A Paranormal Romance Novel (The Graveyard Queen) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 758 ratings

To help a child’s ghost solve the mystery of her death, a cemetery restorer must face her own personal demons in this romantic urban fantasy.

My name is Amelia Gray, and I’m a cemetery restorer who lives with the dead. An anonymous donor has hired me to restore Woodbine Cemetery, a place where the rich and powerful bury their secrets. Forty years ago, a child disappeared without a trace and now her ghost has awakened, demanding that I uncover the truth about her death. Only I know that she was murdered. Only I can bring her killer to justice. But the clues that I follow—a haunting melody and an unnamed baby’s grave—lead me to a series of disturbing suspects.

For generations, The Devlins have been members of Charleston’s elite. John Devlin once turned his back on the expectations that came with his birthright, but now he has seemingly accepted his rightful place. His family’s secrets make him a questionable ally. When my investigation brings me to the gates of his family’s palatial home, I have to wonder if he is about to become my mortal enemy.

Review

"The author writes with impeccable timing, adding suspense at just the right moments, and keeping readers on edge but not overwhelmed. Her character development and imagery allow readers to feel they are in the room with the characters, and when something is off in Amelia's world, readers feel it as well. This page-turner is the perfect next installment in the series."

I discovered author Amanda Stevens when editor J.T. Ellison asked a group of thirteen authors to contribute a southern gothic short story, based on a photograph of a dilapidated house, to the book, Dead Ends. Amanda Steven’s story leaped off the pages for one significant reason: her writing is reminiscent of what I know as British phrasing, that fluid, conversational manner in which Daphne Du Maurier, for example, lulled her readers in her world-class novel, Rebecca. I don’t come across this captivating style of writing often. There’s an intelligent beauty to it, and Amanda Stevens wields it seemingly effortlessly. I looked further into author Amanda Stevens, discovered fifteen novels, and randomly chose The Awakening. I am glad I did.
Set in historic Charleston, South Carolina, The Awakening opens in Woodbine Cemetery, a hidden and forgotten burial ground, of which narrator, Amelia Gray, is commissioned to restore. Already the reader is poised to look over their shoulder. That the narrator speaks in a tone matter of fact prepares them for something unusual, though they immediately accept the premise as a matter of course. It is the fall, the wind rustles tree limbs overhead, the air is chilling, and Amelia Gray is an intuitive who sees the dead.
The Awakening is a mystery wrapped in a ghost story. Amelia discovers an unnamed baby’s grave in Woodbine Cemetery, sees the ghost of a child, and the story takes off in a dynamic suspenseful, surprising, and au courant. Because Amelia Gray is rebounding from her unresolved, broken love affair with dark and handsome John Devlin, a compelling romance tugs at its middle, and elements of the heroine’s journey string us along. This story has everything to keep the reader turning its pages: an eerie setting, a compelling backstory, an intriguing love interest, and, most important to me, a narrator that lets the reader know what she is thinking as events heighten to a hair-raising collide, and hidden elements come to light.
I recommend this expertly paced and crafted book because, to me, it defies genre. It is everything riveting, written in language so uncommonly beautiful I looked forward each night to returning to its burning pages.

I love Gothic novels. As a teenager, I think I read everything Victoria Holt ever wrote. Lately, I've returned to the genre and have found Steven's books well worth the reading. Her prose is lush and atmospheric, and she handles imagery beautifully invoking smells and tastes as well as the more common sight and sound. One of her strengths, for me, is that her novels are character driven. They have a solid sense of place and interesting mysteries, but the focus is on character development.

Amelia is well-written, her relationships with others are complex, she has a classic Gothic backstory regarding her own birth and family, and John Devlin is positively scrumptious. As the last book in the series, "The Awakening" has much going for it. We have a new restoration with a new problem, and Amelia's abilities have been growing by leaps and bounds. Although hampered by her father's early rules, she seems to be coming into her own in spite of her own fears and uncertainties. Devlin finally returns to Amelia's life, and they are beginning to resolve things in their relationship.

The ending, however, was decidedly rushed. I was particularly dismayed by the rich description of an NDE (near death experience) which resulted in Amelia's gift apparently being turned off like a light switch. We have been told how powerful she is, how her gift has been growing, how she's been coming to terms with it, and then it's abruptly closed down. Plus, we discover in the last paragraph of the book that Amelia is expecting, a revelation which is given short shrift. It seems as if Stevens had suddenly decided that the proper ending to the series was for Amelia and Devlin to have a "normal" life, but that decision left the ending falling flat.

I discovered this series about a year ago. Being a taphophile myself, I was surprised that I had not heard of The Graveyard Queen books. This is a wonderful series and The Awakening did not disappoint as the (supposedly) final book in the series (I hope it is not). Beginning with The Restorer the reader is immediately drawn into the story of Amelia, her family and her friends (and Angus!). The way places, people and emotions are described in a sometimes Southern vernacular made the story even more enjoyable for me. An undercurrent throughout the whole series is the love story between Amelia and Devlin. It was quite a journey but seeing how things were resolved made it all worthwhile. The Awakening was a very enjoyable book on many levels. I look forward to any future books by Amanda Stevens.

I just finished The Awakening this evening and it was superb!!! My blood was pounding in my veins along with Ameila when she sees John Devlin for the first time in almost a year and every encounter thereafter! Yes! John Devlin is back! The story is another unique one with a new cemetery and old and new characters! And just when you think you couldn't be any more creeped out/scared than you had reading the previous books in the series, Amanda Stevens includes new scenarios and creatures that make you want to sleep with your light on and wish your home was on hallowed land.

I have to add in general that I've learned more than I ever thought I would about graveyards, history of graveyards (including graveyard speak) and the realization that graveyards are really for the living.

I really think that Amanda Stevens has left "the door open" for a few more Graveyard Queen books as I didn't feel this was truly the last book. It could be wishful and selfish thinking, but I know there are more Conge, creatures and graveyards for Amelia to conquer because she has the gift.

The last book in the series is wrapping up most of loose ends. The ending is open to interpretation but I’m glad to see Amelia and Devlin resolving the issue. They will be happy together after all.
