A South Carolina widow travels back in time to 1921 and meets a familiar lighthouse keeper in this romance by the bestselling author of The Bourbon Thief.

Faye Barlow is drowning. After the death of her beloved husband, Will, she cannot escape her grief and most days can barely get out of bed. But when she’s offered a job photographing South Carolina’s storied coast, she accepts. Photography, after all, is the only passion she has left.

In the quaint beach town, Faye falls in love again when she sees the crumbling yet beautiful Bride Island lighthouse and becomes obsessed with the legend surrounding The Lady of the Light—the keeper’s daughter who died in a mysterious drowning in 1921. Like a moth to a flame, Faye is drawn to the lighthouse for reasons she can’t explain. While visiting it one night, she is struck by a rogue wave and a force impossible to resist drags Faye into the past—and into a love story that is not her own . . .

Fate is changeable. Broken hearts can mend. But can she love two men separated by a lifetime?

The Night Mark is a captivating story
I KNEW this book would resonate with me based solely on its description. The Night Mark was enchanting, mystical, moving, and visual. I feel like I was given a wonderful gift, and I want nothing more than to remember how thankful I am to have had these few hours within its pages. I have enjoyed this story in the Kindle AND Audible versions.

When a man makes a vow to love and care for you as long as you live, what does that mean? Does it mean he got his wedding vows wrong or does it mean he feels a connection and a commitment to you that won't be bound by the limits of time and space? Faye Barlow, "a hostage taken by time", is the heroine of Tiffany Reisz's newest novel, The Night Mark. Faye has been blessed or cursed to know a love like that: a love so perfect she finds it impossible to move forward with her life in any meaningful way when that love is taken from her. But the question the author raises is whether or not that love has truly been taken from her. Is it still within her grasp if she has the courage to make Time a friend rather than an enemy and what will be the cost of this friendship with the enemy? I warn you to fasten your seat belts and be prepared for a spellbinding ride. Ladies and Gentlemen! Your Time Machine is about to depart!

There are so many things I love about this book. I love the feel of the story - that despair can turn into hope and reality can turn into something mystical. I love the setting because I am from the South Carolina Lowcountry and as the book affirms "Lowcountry is God's Country". I love that the setting is familiar from The Bourbon Thief. The same fictional Bride Island that will be home to Tamara and Levi Shelby is home to the lighthouse where Chief Carrick Morgan is the keeper. I love the character development. I just want to hug Miss Lizzie and Dolly and Father Pat. Even the nasty characters are delightfully smarmy and vile. Most of all, I love that the author has taken this leap to do something other authors have done before her and has done it successfully, adding her unique touch.

There may be readers who will be reluctant to leave the edgy kingdom of The Original Sinners or the lighthearted and sexy world of Men at Work. The characters in The Night Mark still convey the author's gift for dialogue. There is still the same witty banter and the sex is sexy, but when the author describes this novel as her most romantic book yet, she is exactly right. The pervasive feeling one gets as the waves of the storyline move inexorably closer to the shore is the transforming power of love. I recommend you suspend all your preset notions about what constitutes time and history before entering this enchanted world created by a master storyteller. Dear Ms. Reisz . . . you just continue to amaze me!

Faye Barlow is woman who experienced a tragedy four years earlier. Since then, she hasn’t been able to recover until she finally decides to move forward no matter the consequences. With a fortuitous job offer, Faye travels to South Carolina to restore her passion for photography and to find herself again. Having always been told that she lives in the past, Faye didn’t expect time to actually beckon her.

Carrick Morgan, a naval officer by training, is a quiet, self-sufficient and honest man who is the lighthouse keeper on an isolated island in the 1920s. After one woman enters his life, he’s sure of his affection and will protect her with all he knows. According to local legend, she was unexpectedly torn from Carrick’s life, but what transpires changes the course of fate.

After becoming enraptured with an abandoned lighthouse, one night Faye decides to visit the deserted island and tour the lighthouse on her own. As she walks onto the decrepit pier, she sees a mysterious recurring symbol that distracts her from the waves trying to ensnare her into the sea. From that point, Faye awakens in the arms of the man she’s always loved and her new life begins.

As Faye realizes all isn’t what it seems, she acclimates to her new surroundings knowing that she really doesn’t have the incentive to leave. With her arrival, Carrick’s life alters due to time snapping back just enough for a redo; however, it feels so natural to Carrick as he sees the woman who is supposed to be with him. For Faye, putting together the pieces keeps her intrigued and also bound to Carrick in such delicious ways.

Faced with reality of her travel, Faye remembers the future and must decide where she wants to remain. Being true to Carrick is imperative, as he must know that the heart, mind and body of the woman he originally knew is completely Faye. Both must make a choice but one holds the key to change it all.

For me, Carrick was a standout character, as he is honorable and straight shooter. The romantic element encircling Carrick was interesting on many levels and I was interested to see how Faye processed all her feelings toward Carrick in order to only see him. With Faye, she definitely had some struggles, but traveling to a different time seemed to offer her the peace she desperately needed. It wasn’t just about abandoning her world but she embraced what she always valued and seized the second chance.

There is no doubt that Tiffany Reisz is an incredible storyteller and she effortlessly manages to convey the heart of her characters as she offers poignant moments of pause and introspection. In addition to Carrick, Faye and significant secondary characters, the history and symbolism of the lighthouse enhances the nostalgia and romanticism of the era.

The Night Mark offers a story about a second chance at love and also at living life to the fullest. While the romance and time travel aspects are slightly unconventional, the message is still clear. This book would appeal to those who wish to get swept away by fate.

The kind of book you devour, not because of suspense, but because it is attractive. The Night Mark delivers: longing, love, self-discovery, and of course, aching. As usual Tiffany's writing is close, emotional, amazing.

Did you hear me shout wow? Did you? I was loud, but the wow came after a sob, then a wow, then another, bigger sob. It was all on the same page!

It really is no secret that I think Tiffany Reisz is the bee’s knees. I love her books and I don’t just mean the Original Sinners, although I do love them; I love her other books too. The Bourbon Thief. The Lucky Ones. The Godwicks.

I could read The Night Mark again and again and again and still find new things to marvel at. Parts to laugh at, to cry at, to be overjoyed at. So overjoyed.

I loved every character. Will. Faye. Faith. Carrick. Pat. Dolly - I adored Dolly, loved her, everything about her, she’s my spirit animal although I can’t sew, but I would have made Carrick climb every stair in the lighthouse to take me to the top but I think I can make a decent pie and decorate a room.

This book is so clever and so special. It’s a romantic’s dream. When you can love a person in this world and love them in another - it’s just beautiful. If you love the concept of time travel and destiny, please read this book. If you have sparkly red shoes that you like to wear because Wizard of Oz is the way to make you happy, please read this book. There’s no place like home.

3.0 out of 5 stars Finally time traveling done right
Reviewed in Mexico on September 2, 2017
I didn't cry at the end, but I cried at the beginning and middle. Some parts were just sooo sad, and I think I liked those parts more than the actual romance.

Look, I like romance a lot, but I prefer a slow burn than a love-at-first-sight. I don't believe in those. So that's why I thought it was pretty lame when they were kissing mere seconds after knowing each other.

I feel like the biggest problem with this novel was that there was more material there, and she just went the wrong way about it. I mean, the whole question: "can she love a man that may look like her husband, but is a completely different man?" sounds like it could be a great book, but it was lacking. I don't think I ever connected with the story. I knew they were going to fall in love and live happily ever after. I wanted more drama.

Surprisingly, I liked the time traveling thing. It's hard for an author to get it right, and Tiffany Reisz did.... except at the end. (view spoiler)

For me, this was a big hit and miss. Although, I enjoyed some aspects of the book, not everything, but some.

4.0 out of 5 stars A feel good Romance.
Reviewed in India on April 21, 2017
Not what I was expecting. It certainly has less of the erotic and more of the romance that Tiffany Reisz is known for. I did quite enjoy it and it makes for a great read on a cosy Sunday afternoon or when you need a good cry. It's equal parts sappy and equal parts sassy with a strong enough plot line to keep you hooked. Would totally recommend for lovers of romance. However if you want tastes of the darker sides, Reisz's Orignal Sinners series and The Bobourn theif (which while isn't a prequel bit set in the same universe as The night mark) are what you should go for.
