Ghost Writer in the Sky (The Xanth Novels Book 41) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 390 ratings

Two Ordinary People from Mundania travel to Xanth to defeat a rogue Night Colt in the latest in a beloved series from bestselling author Piers Anthony.

The Night Colt has one ambition: to deliver dreams to the deserving. Unfortunately, only Night Mares can take on this task, and the Colt has no hope of leading his own herd if he can’t get any practice. . . . So he’s struck a deal with a Mundane. During the hours when the Night Mares rest—dusk and dawn—the duo plants stories in the air, compelling the people of Xanth to enact them—whether they want to or not. Unwilling to participate in these fantasies, the princesses of Xanth, Dawn and Eve, come up with a plan to fight the menacing pair, but they’ll need the help of two unlikely heroes to succeed.

In Mundania, a mysterious painting entrances Ordinary People Tartan and Tara. But why do they each see something different when they look at it? They quickly learn that it’s not a painting after all, but a portal to a magical world. With nothing to lose, they climb through the portal into Xanth and are met with a plea to help stop the Night Colt and his ghost writer.

Tartan and Tara don’t hesitate to join the quest to save Xanth from the ultimate pun-tastrophe. Together with their new friends, they’ll begin a journey full of magic and romance—and, of course, puns—that will lead them to a long-lost prince, a beautiful dragoness, the goddess Isis, and a demon named Ted.

With rip-roaring humor and nonstop adventure, the newest addition to Piers Anthony’s popular Xanth series is sure to enchant fans of epic fantasy.

This was one of the last books I got and read as part of this series. It was okay, but it also showed me that I've out grown the series.

Another great novel. I'm a old fashioned humbug homophob and had problems with certain elements, but ultimately, since I couldn't put this book down for long, I had to choose to either stop reading a Piers Anthony book, (like that could happen!), or get-over-it and persevere. I chose to keep reading. I wish Piers would take on an apprentice he could train to write Xanth novels with Piers' style, as Ann McCaffery did with Todd McCaffery, so Xanth novels could keep being written. But (French word).

There is a quest as a group try to stop the changes on Xanth and saving
it from a Ghost Writer. Also time travel, parodies, and messing with
future relatives. It was good, but it dragged in the middle. Worth a read.

So if you like Piers Anthony and the Xanth novels, this is for you. It was certainly for me. Hopefully you started with the early novels in the series, so the returning characters are familiar. If you have not read any, my advice is to start at the beginning (A Spell for Chameleon) and decide if you like the style and type of humor. I definitely do, but some may not. If you like the Xanth environment, binge on the series. Check his website for the sequence of novels, and bibliography page for background, history, and characters. This latest novel has the Goddess Isis play a major role and keeps things exciting on several levels •••, if you know what I mean.

I was a huge Anthony fan in the 80's - the 1st half of the '00's.

I read god only knows how many Xanth Novels, The Incarnations Series, & several of the other series. I also enjoyed Firefly & some of the other stand alones.

I think what got me out of following Xanth is they started to feel all too similar to each other. I also had a bad experience with "Pornocopia". I am FAR from being a prude, & I really liked Firefly (which is sci-fi porn). For a long time 'Copia was out of print, & felt like the (very expensive) Anthony Holy Grail (A quality author writing erotica, what more could one ask for??). Well, I'm glad I waited for the Kindle on 'Copia. It is one of the worst & most disgusting books I've ever read. It reminded me of Beavis & B-Head gone mad. It was written for adults with an 11 year old mentality.

At any rate (rant over), those were the 2 reasons I largely stopped following Piers.

When "Ghost Writer in the Sky" was offered to me, I decided to give it a try, as I used to love the Xanth & Incarnations books.

If you're anything like me, you may find the 1st 2 chapters mediocre. We all know Xanth is about puns, but imo the first 2 chapters totally tossed any semblance of a plot in exchange for fitting in as many puns as possible.

    Not. Very. Punny.

The good news is starting with chapter 3, it's largely the Xanth I remember (for 80 years old, the man can still write). It's far from the best of the series, but I enjoyed it. Definitely worth a read for light entertainment; it's just a matter of getting to chapter 3.......

As Amazon does a pretty good job of describing the plot, I don't see a need to repeat what they've already said.

While I read a trade paperback size, for reasons of price I tend to recommend the Kindle edition.

And I would like to thank Mr Anthony for all the years of reading enjoyment (& if I remember right, he even used 1 or 2 of my puns in the 00's!).

I'd like to give this 3 1/2 stars, but that's not an option.

The Xanth books are what introduced me to the joy of reading and this was a good book. That said it took me a couple of chapters to get grabbed and focused. Third chapter I was hooked and it wasn't put down til I finished. Some of my early issue may have just been the Ghost writer character, I didn't like him. He was redeemed as he SPOILER didn't believe he was doing something Real, he thought he was dreaming.
Loved the other characters and was really interesting.
As always I look forward to the next.

I love the Xanth books and own them all. This one was as great as the others. I love the puns. Be prepared to groan and laugh out loud. Remember Xanth is and always was an ADULT series, so parts may not be too suitable for younger readers. Story line was excellent. The author moves with the times, keeping Xanth fresh, whilst keeping us in touch with characters we know and love. This book, as with the other 40 something can be read as standalone, but is best read in order. The trip from Mundania (the "real" world should be a juxtaposition but it isn't. In fact is more real than Narni, Middle Earth or Wonderland. Oh wait, That's cos it is! Check the map of Florida!
Can't wait for the next one!!
