Casting with Lefty Kreh Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

Like taking a private lesson with the best teacher in the world of fishing, this fly-casting guide offers step-by-step instructions to over forty casts.

Casting should be nearly effortless. If you understand fly-casting mechanics and how to adapt them to various fishing conditions, your casting will greatly improve. That has been Lefty’s philosophy since he began teaching fly casting over fifty years ago. Lefty shows how to get rid of a tailing loop, throw a slack-line cast, and roll cast better, as well as casts for tight quarters, in wind, casting with weighted flies and lines, and distance casts. A section on the physical movements explains how to prevent injuries to the rotator cuff and elbow. Whether you fish salt water or streams, heavy rods or light, you'll learn everything from small changes in movements that greatly improve your casting to totally new takes on traditional casts from this book. Lefty is the master, and this book captures his lifetime of wisdom on the subject of casting.

“Lefty Kreh is well known for his quick smile and sharp wit, his encyclopedic knowledge of knots and tackle, his decades of fly-fishing exploration around the globe, and his remarkable prowess with a fly rod, but his greatest gift to fly fishers is his role as a teacher and mentor.” —John Randolph

I already had my own copy of Lefty's book, but recently was fly fishing in Alaska with a young man just beginning the sport. Tom picked me up at the Lodge at 5:00am to fish a river in Talkeetna. When I returned home, I ordered this book and sent it to Tom as a "thank you" for taking time to make my Alaska vacation even better.

Whether you consider yourself a seasoned pro, or are just taking up the sport of fly fishing, this book is a must have for anyone pursuing the sport. Lefty Kreh paints a perfect picture on every page, explaining the dynamics needed to improve your casting, and also teaching new casting techniques for use in special conditions. I once heard a phrase about Lefty Kreh, and it goes something like this. "If fly fishing were a religion, Lefty Kreh would be the Pope." Lefty Kreh is a Gentleman's gentleman, and a great teacher. Buy this book, and enjoy the sport of fly fishing ten fold.

Who hasn't heard of Lefty Kreh? This book will be a classic. Beautifully photographed, I can't imagine a flyfisher that wouldn't learn something that will improve his or her casting technique in this volume, regardless if you're a novice or an old hand. This is a keeper.

Lots of good pictures. Written by a master. However, his "new" style of teaching is to teach principles and let the student find his own method of casting. Might be better for more advanced caster but as a beginner I found it harder to understand what I should be doing at different points during the cast.

This is a substantial book in every sense of the word. As somebody else has pointed out, it weighs almost 4 lbs and is hardback, the paper is very high quality and it's jammed full of photographs. Every single aspect of the cast is covered by numerous photographs, usually from several angles and both close-up and wide angle. There's probably over a thousand photos and they're all extremely high quality.

This is the ultimate 'coffee-table' book of fly casting.

I'd been having some problems with my casting after coming back to fly fishing after a brief pause (of 10 years). I was getting trailing loops and having to untangle wind knots every couple of casts. I was also having problems getting it to straighten out and it was continually landing in a heap.

It was driving me to distraction and I was looking around for professional instruction, but couldn't find anybody local so starting looking on Youtube where I found the Left Krey videos.

Lefty has broken down the casting process into numerous principles and techniques, which are very unorthodox, but seem to make a a lot of sense. One example is that he tells you to twist your body rather than just using your forearm, which I believe ties in with many other sports such as golf where you're using your core rather than just your arm. In the videos on Youtube he makes it look so effortless as he continually throws out a perfect long line. Think Ernie Els and you're on the right track.

After seeing him on Youtube something clicked, and I figured that I had to buy his book, which arrived today.

I flicked through it for about 30 minutes (and believe me you wouldn't even scratch the surface in that time), and then went fishing....

Anyway, in 3 hours I didn't get a single trailing loop, most of my casts unrolled perfectly and on the few times when they didn't, I was able to think through what had gone wrong using Lefty's principles and they'd be perfect again until I slipped back into old habits.

All that in 30 minutes ! This book, and Lefty's principles in general are tremendous.

As a conclusion, I need to mention that I'd originally learnt to fly fish when I was about 12 (which is a long time ago !). I was taught by my uncle who was a life long fisherman, but never had any professional casting lessons until 10 years ago when I had 2 hours instruction by a very well known fly fishing author. Those 2 hours cost about 10 times what I paid for this book (second hand) and weren't nearly as effective.

If you've read this far, then you're obviously pretty interested in improving your casting, so just buy it.
