The past is frozen in time. The future is uncertain. This present moment is the only place that touches eternity. Make your life count by handing the pen of your life to the Author of creation. He's inviting you to experience heaven on earth here and now, in the space between memories.

- A Message from David -
One of the great challenges of life is finding the subtle glories in the space between memories. These are the heavenly tinges that fashion our story into eloquent prose; that sprinkle our recollections with effulgent expectation.
But recognizing God's hand at work in our day-to-day lives is easier said than done.
Here's a confession: I often overlook present splendor because I am so engrossed with former glories. I worry incessantly about the future. My nostalgic tendencies obscure the joy of the moment. But I sense the Holy Spirit saying, Don’t dwell on the past. There are far, far better things ahead. Look around and see. This time, here and now, is the space between memories.
"In The Space Between Memories, David Joannes shares a captivating journey through his life, moment by moment, story by story. He is vulnerable about the victories and the trials of life as a missionary in China. He learned one of my favorite God lessons: Jesus is the vine, and we are the branches. If we let Him, He will prune us until our lives are hidden in Him, so we can see what He sees and feel what He feels. I pray that as you read this powerful book, you will surrender your heart in a deeper way to the only One who can teach us what love looks like. I pray you will be inspired by David’s life to see the poor and the broken as treasures God wants to bring to His banqueting table and invite them home." — HEIDI BAKER, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of the Board at Iris Global and author of several books, including Birthing the Miraculous
"The caricature of the missionary as some stodgy old plodder swathed in polyester has never had much basis in fact, and anyhow The Space Between Memories blows all that to pieces. David’s tales of wildfaring and wayfaring, close calls and close encounters, all in the service of the Gospel, unfold like an Indiana Jones plot. Or better: like a sequel to the book of Acts. If your own faith has gotten a bit stodgy of late, here’s the antidote." — MARK BUCHANAN, Pastor, Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Ambrose University, and author of The Rest of God & Your God Is Too Safe
"The Space Between Memories is a stirring masterpiece of adventure, danger, excitement, and heart-wrenching passion for people. The imagery David paints with words makes you feel like you are actually there, wishing you could jump into the story with him!" — RON LUCE, Founder of Teen Mania Ministries, Acquire the Fire, Jesus Global Youth Day, and Generation Next
David Joannes retells his experiences on the mission field with both wit and humor, then peppers his narrative with a healthy dose of humility. The story is as entertaining as it is enlightening, which is a rare find for books dealing with the harsh realities of missions in the darkest, most unreached areas of the world. Above all, The Space Between Memories gives glory to God and rekindles in all of us the child-like excitement on the journey of global missions." — EUGENE BACH, Lead trouble-maker at Back to Jerusalem and author of Leaving Buddha, Shackled, and I Stand With Christ

"I highly recommend The Space Between Memories! David uses his God-designed artistic gift to communicate his passion, calling, and how God transformed his life as he journeyed to the unreached world. The Space Between Memories will inspire, challenge, and encourage you in ways you may have never experienced. But be warned! You may just find yourself giving up everything to advance God's Kingdom after you read this book! Consider yourself warned!" — Steve Schirmer, President of Silk Road Catalyst
"The letters on these pages are inked in blood from a heart for China spilled out on digital cotton, burned in by a passion aflame for the lost. Reading this reminds me why we do what we do—for the sake of the unreached. Be careful—in reading this book, you, too, might catch fire." — Justin Long, Director of Global Research at Beyond
"David Joannes is a man who has clearly said, 'Lord, use my life as You want.' In The Space Between Memories, David gives a crystal clear example of a man who heard God's call and obeyed it—an increasing rarity in our world today. The end result is a man who has been used in mighty ways. As you read this book you will be encouraged and challenged, not only by what God has done in David's life but what He can and will do in your own as you obey His call." — Mike Falkenstine, President of One Eight Catalyst and author of the 6 Marks Book Series
"In The Space Between Memories, David Joannes wields words in an artistic fashion to reveal the heart of God, the struggle of unreached people groups, and an urgency for the missionary venture. Are you ready to take part in God's epic redemptive plan? This book will help you realize that God wants you to join Him in redeeming the times and ushering in the Kingdom of God." — Dave Hasz, Vice President of Leadership Development and Discipleship, Bethany Global University
"At once a travelogue, a love story, and a profound reflection on the missionary task, David's memoir narrates an intense odyssey of the heart. David's missiological reflections go beyond textbook theory and probe deep into the question of what it means to have a heart for the unreached and a lifestyle to match. The Space Between Memories is both inspirational and informative, a personal narrative that speaks to the heart and an in-depth look at God's work among the peoples of China during the past two decades." — Brent Fulton, President of ChinaSource and author of China's Urban Christians

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2017The Space Between Memories embodies a peculiar genre-evading power. This collection of stories from the frontlines of frontier missions ventures along the spectrum of memoirs but remains in the space between memoirs of a life of ministry and ministry itself. These memories are strung together with such a poetic vocabulary and vivid story-telling by author, artist, and missionary David Joannes.
Here are 3 positive results (points of personal revival) I experienced while reading the book:
1. Revival of good artistry
Joannes brings his story to life. He begins by pulling you into the pages of the book or Kindle screen past the black and white into the scene. Sometimes you can smell the tobacco and halitosis, sometime you can feel the sting of face slaps by midnight interrogators. But his word power goes beyond this utilitarian factor, it is such beautiful art that it causes astonishing worship to rise up in Christians, especially those of us hungry to achieve and appreciate this level of wordsmithing. The Christian community needs even more artists of this caliber.
As someone who has been privileged to speak about the state of the church and the task of the Great Commission, specifically the unreached people groups (UPG) and unengaged, unreached people groups (UUPG), it was inspiring to see this information artfully displayed. There’s a brief history of work in China and a timeline of Joannes’ own involvement but the most faithful aspect is the stitching together of these individual threads so that the reader sees God’s beautiful handiwork, His tapestry of glory. This work challenges presenters of all kinds to a higher level of excellence especially those in frontier missions.
2. Revival of personal prayer and hunger for God
At every new development of the story, believers are called to prayer. What better thing could be said of a person’s work? This was very warning to me, to know God calls us to pray for people who we do not even know are connected and then He opens our eyes to this network over time.
This book will help you to experience the presence of God in multiple ways. You will be thrust into pray, even into areas of intercession for which you’ve never before considered. Without listing prayer requests, you learn to seek God’s heart because as the author lays his own heart bare you begin to see, hear, and feel God’s heartbeat for the nations.
This book works as an advertisement for the glory of God. Joannes, the founder of Within Reach Global speaks not as a spokesperson for his own personal work but rather as a mouthpiece for God who longs to be a pawn on the divine chess set. Joannes simultaneously calls warriors from across enemy lines and gives epic, stirring motivational rally cries for tired and weary vets, time and time again.
3. Revival of love for family
In addition to his contagious sense of adventure and thirst for life, Joannes makes use of his opportunity to introduce us to his family. Their love story will make your fall in love not just with your spouse but with your own love story all over again. Regardless of parallels or the absence thereof, you will put this book down and reminisce, you will snatch up your little ones and get hugs. You will thank God for your own story.
Thank God for people like this who dedicate time to write books like this about work like this. It’s worth 5 minutes of your day, pretty soon you won’t want to put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2016I recently saw this book through social media, and I knew I had to get a copy. As someone who has worked in Asia, David's stories and heart for the lost resonated with me. If you are exploring the possibility of entering missions for the unreached this should be on your list to discern your calling. It lays out the challenges and blessings of a life given to bringing Jesus to those who have never heard of him. The emotional roller coaster of such a life can't be understated. David does a great job in the book showing how a life lived on mission needs intimacy with God, community with other believers, and reliance on the Bible.
This isn't your average book on missions experiences. It is written as a description of some of the events that have happened to David, his missions organization, and his family discussing how he has put together these unique memories of his time on mission. The concept of memory is important throughout the book and drives the narrative. I found the rememories chapters particularly interesting and looked forward to them throughout the book. I left the book asking the question: what kind of memories am I forming in service to God and how important are those to my story? I will be recommending this book to friends interested in working in Asia.
This story is a great example of how God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways. I want to share some of the stories with friends here in the US, as I have shared similar stories in the past with them. They usually react by being amazed at the person's unique faith or bravery but don't realize it's about saying yes to God. Letting God guide your life in all areas. David sets a similar tone explaining his calling and placement in these amazing frontier missions opportunities.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2018David writes passionately, with true accounts of adventure, risk, sacrifice, and compassion in lands one has yet and may never visit. One can feel the heart of the author throughout this book. He's truly woven a tapestry of a life compelled to explore and share REAL hope, truth, and love with the people of the east, in some of the most unreached places and often impoverished cultures remaining on the planet. Don't let some of the (shall we say) grandiloquent words sprinkled here and there distract, as they are easily accessed and mined like gems with thesaurus.com. Seriously, it feels like you are right there in the midst of the action; even smelling, hearing, seeing, tasting the scenes brought to life. I was surprised by the romance and glimpse into family life, and challenged/inspired as a husband and father, myself. This really is a magnificent book and it's too bad amazon only limits reviews to five stars. This book deserves many more. Soli Deo Gloria. Congrats, and many thanks. Humbly, -C
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2023This book brought fresh inspiration to me … primarily because it tells of what God can do today through people surrendered to His will …
As a young man, I was deeply gripped by the biography of Hudson Taylor. It has carried me for decades. The same Spirit is seen in the stories in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2016Part memoir, part call to action, The Space Between Memories should be required reading for any Christian, but particularly those going to places were the Gospel has almost no indigenous representation. Two intertwined stories merge to form an excellent image of missions in China, focusing on the evolving relationship of the official and unofficial church. The missional community of the western church would benefit from digging into David (and Lorna's) approach and experience to missions that precludes being a exported professional pastor in the western tradition. A great read, a real page-turner, and a frank assessment of the challenge of the great commission.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all
After reading David's other two books, "The Mind of a Missionary" & "Gospel Privilege". I couldn't resist buying his first book... "The space between memories".
When David tells a story, it feels like you are with him walking the streets, trekking the mountains and experiencing the culture. He truly is an exceptional writer! Reading his stories and testimonies was such an encouragement for both me and my wife and we can't wait for his next book! :-)
When you consider to buy this book, just buy his other two books as well! It's brilliant and inspiring!
