CEO On the Go in Vietnam: Spend years reading Vietnamese DNA or read these 10 secrets to leapfrog from day 1 Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

If you’re making the courageous step to lead a corporate in Vietnam, your first year in leadership will be challenging. Internal conflict is inevitable as you adjust to the Vietnamese DNA.

While Vietnam – a gold mine – attempts to leverage international trade opportunities to re-kindle economic growth, the FMCG sector – representing consumer power – remains flat.

FMCG manufacturers that understand the Vietnamese DNA are going from strength to strength while others are sinking.

Read this succinct collection of Vietnamese secrets on the plane to Vietnam or over an iced Vietnamese coffee in one afternoon to optimise your integration into a challenging but highly rewarding environment.

CEO On the Go in Vietnam combines a unique blend of knowledge and experience of a native Vietnamese businessman and the perspective of an outsider behavioral economist looking in.

Take this example of insight, District 7 sub-municipality in Ho Chi Minh City – the commercial capital of Vietnam – is home to Vietnam’s first public surveillance system. As traditional on-the-beat policing and private investigation in Vietnam evolves and inter-class disparities widen, a huge opportunity emerges for B2C, B2B, and B2G private/public security specialists.

Here's another interesting case, showing how the old ways of Vietnamese life affect trends today; everyday communications for Vietnamese had always been about proximity or word of mouth. Vietnamese life – family, friends, and work – in the past was very localised. This meant that letter writing and sending occasion-based greetings cards never gained traction, despite the existence of a fairly effective national postal system.

While word of mouth remains a key touch point for marketers, sons and daughters, and nuclear families are becoming more independent and are moving away from their hometowns in pursuit of better standards of living. With the cost of transport on the increase, especially during peak seasons and being a country in which gifting is very important, greetings cards pose a significant opportunity for those that can successfully inspire Vietnamese.

It is the intention of the authors that this series of references will fuel your leadership in your corporate and in the market place in Vietnam, and ultimately brining sustained and balanced increases in prosperity for Vietnamese.

We strongly believe that you will gain deep and practical insight from this book. All the best with your business venture in Vietnam!

Having lived in Vietnam for almost 3 years I wish I had the chance to read this book earlier. Even topics that I thought I understood I wasn't quite right about. Considering the political climate and media censorship, this is a brave and at times salacious account of Vietnamese culture. This book does not sugar coat anything! Some might be easily offended by the broad generalizations and stereotypes, but however politically incorrect they are, it useful to be able to interpret this complex beautiful and at times baffling culture, and for the most part accurate. Some social economics were staring me in the face and I had not put the two together, such as just how deep rooted the ultra-convenience selling point is. It's a quick read, and easily digestible in a day. If you are new to Vietnam it's a valuable read.

An interesting view on the vietnamese differences across regions and eagerness for developping ultra convenient services. Exemples are a bit general so more real life study case could have brought something deeper. This also relates mostly to BtoC businesses when B2B and B2G could also be addressed. Thanks for putting this all together in an efficient style.

I have lived in Vietnam for 20 years and found this book a great joy. It solved a need I have. Being a businessman, many friends and associates who are interested to invest here have often asked me to share my experience of life in this land. Tracy and Pham have written what I need to tell them and done a better job than I could. The ten chapters (secrets) aptly described the very basics of what any CEO or investor needs to know as foundational knowledge of the ‘Vietnamese DNA’.
The challenge of investing in a new country stretches beyond the dollars and cents (money), materials and machines. The people aspects are equally important if not more important as they are the ones to help manage the company. Thus, any knowledge of its culture, folkways and moreways will definitely be adding value to the investment.
The book is meant to be read ‘on the plane to Vietnam…’, thus the light hearted and easy reading style is commendable. The careful observations of life and idiosyncrasy of the Vietnamese gives new comers a flavor of what and how to approach their business to fit into the local environment.
For their next book, I hope to read real life experiences/stories of CEOs especially on how they cross the roads in the city. Surely, we can learn from their contributions.
I strongly recommend this book to any CEO coming to Vietnam.

Recommended reading for any non Vietnamese person going to work in Vietnam. Helped me understand further about some of the observations I've made living in Vietnam. Well worth a couple of hours by the swimming pool or on a rainy day.
