About the author

Woody Starkweather loves words—spoken, written, acted, or sung. He grew up on the Connecticut shore, middle-class in a conclave of wealth. He was lifted from this socially discordant setting to another similar one by a scholarship to a prestigious prep school. In college, he majored in writing, but later, working for a publisher, he edited a book on speech pathology, which ignited a passion for helping those who struggle with words. He changed professions and went on to become an internationally recognized expert on stuttering. His 30 years of clinical experience and research are published in 50 articles and nine books. One of those books, Stuttering, co-authored with his wife Janet Givens, made Choice Magazine's 1996 list of Best Academic Books.
Leaving academia in 2000, he and his wife spent two years with the Peace Corps in Kazakhstan, where he published a book of short stories and wrote a young adult novel and a trio of international espionage thrillers. He now lives in Vermont, where he’s written and directed six plays and a series of light-hearted articles on language—"Woody on Words." He still follows his passion by teaching online courses in phonetics and communication disorders. He also sings classical and sacred music.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2014A fast-moving thriller that keeps you wondering about the safety of Charles and Louise (middle-aged US spies) as they try to uncover something embarrassing about the President of France. Their assignment takes them to Paris, Marseilles, and finally Kazakhstan where they uncover a drug ring and terrorist plot. This tightly written first novel is filled with credible and enticing details.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2014My wife and I enjoyed this thoroughly. Woody's experience in Kazakhstan comes into play with two delightful characters. Imagine: A 'spy' novel with no violence!! If you haven't got it yet, I recommend that you do so.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2019I’m going to be the other side of the coin here, after all the positive reviews. I read a mystery a week on my Kindle, over 300 so far, and I know what I like—offbeat characters and situations. I thought this would fit the bill. Unfortunately the authors writing style leaves me cold. It’s very dry and clinical, like listening to a radio episode of Dragnet. For unusual mysteries that are more exciting try “Ten Years Gone” by Jonathan Dunsky or “The Zig-zag girl” by Ellie Griffiths. Both very unusual stories that are a lot more exciting and are the first in their respective series of stories. Also Jon Talton’s David Mapstone series of mysteries, starting with Concrete Desert.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2014What a fun and quick read! It's so nice to see an older couple as protagonists of a story. Also it was great to see that using one's intelligence and wit was far more effective than brawn. I really liked the descriptions of Kazakhstan which were quite vivid and a place I will probably never get to visit. Charles and Louise are like old friends, folks you enjoy being around. Read it, you will enjoy it.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2016This is the second book I read about Charles and Louise. If you don't know them--they get to work when the President calls. they are not spies they are instigators (?) They don't carry guns, they have camera's and a laptop. They both have special skills (I won't spoil it for you). This book starts out with the first chapter actually being about chapter 30 so it leaves you wanting to find out how it began and how it ends. They head for Paris and the fun begins. Louis hacks into the French computer system from a library but gets out just as the police arrive to find the hacker. Charles hires a couple of actors but doesn't really tell them why he needs them just offers to pay them big bucks for no questions asked. After Paris the head other places until they end up in a scary situation (chapter 1). I really like this couple and the author writes believable action. I can't wait for their next adventure!! I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2017Charles and Louise are my new favorite heroes, spiced with spunk, wit, charm and blazing into realistic scenarios with Katy Bar The Door attitude and arthritic knees! I picture a movie with JK Simmons , Tom Hanks and Merrill Street, or Kathy Bates, oh please any AARP hotties!
