The Peace Maker: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 218 ratings

The Bible story of Abigail and David reimagined as a twenty-first century novel of ruthless political ambition and devastating family secrets.

A provocative and timely thriller in which the fate of the world depends on a single election. Leif Mitchell has gone from a humble life as a stable hand and country rock singer to become Governor of Kentucky. Now he’s running as the Republican candidate for the Presidency. The contender: US democratic Senator Darren Richards. But its Richards’ wife Chessa who is privy to not only her husband’s damaging secrets, but also a vengeful plan of attack by Mitchell to bring down his opponent by any means necessary.

As the increasingly vicious campaign escalates, the “high road” to victory is all but destroyed. Now it’s up to Chessa to try and preserve peace on both sides. But more than the futures of Richards and Mitchell are in question. The likely First Lady is putting herself the middle of a political crossfire in which her own life could be at risk.

Review

"The Peace Maker by Michele Chynoweth is the type of story that many young women have lived in one way or another. Many of us have been like Chessa, caught between the one we love and doing what's right, but how can you decide what's right when your heart and your mind are conflicted?"

From the Inside Flap

Chessa's husband, Darren Richards, is narcissistic, abusive, and an alcoholic. None of that changed when he became the primary candidate for President of the United States, but Chessa's reservations about her husband reached a fever pitch. How could she support his candidacy and tout him as the best leader for her country? Darren's opponent, Leif Mitchell, was selected from his humble life as a stable hand and country rock singer. Now a national hero and a real threat as the leading Republican candidate, Darren will stop at nothing to bring Leif down, causing Leif to reconsider his high road approach to politics. When Chessa finds out Leif is preparing to seek revenge on her husband in an attack that will not only destroy him, but may cost other innocent victims as well, she finds herself torn. Should she protect those who would become collateral damage, and by default her husband? Book 3 in the Ellechor REIMAGINES product line, The Peace Maker is loosely based on the Bible story of David's second wife, Abigail.

Modern Day Bible Stories - contemporary suspense novels by best-selling author Michele Chynoweth - bring stories in the Bible to life for today's readers with contemporary characters and plots so they can better understand and relate to God's messages of faith and hope. Michele's universally-appealing inspirational novels are filled with drama, intrigue and romance and include "The Faithful One" based on the Book of Job, "The Peace Maker," based on the story of David and Abigail in the First Book of Samuel, "The Runaway Prophet" based on the Book of Jonah, and "The Jealous Son" based on the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis.

Michele believes the Old Testament stories are often difficult to read and comprehend, so she hopes that re-imagining them in contemporary times with edgy fiction that's fast-paced and entertaining will help readers appreciate them, understand God's messages and hopefully bring people back to the Bible itself. In addition to being an author, Michele is also an award-winning speaker, book coach and editor, and a college instructor of writing, publishing and marketing fiction. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Michele and her husband have a blended family of five children and one grandchild and live in North East, Maryland. What do you get, when fiction collides with a story from the Bible? You get The Peace Maker by Michele Chynoweth! The Peace Maker takes a journey in modern day scenes, following the events surrounding Abigail meeting David, king-elect.Michele Chynoweth is the author of The Faithful One, The Runaway Prophet, and soon to be released, The Jealous Son, all based on Biblical characters. She is also an inspirational speaker, a book coach and a writing instructor.Michele says her books are “contemporary suspense/romance novels that re-imagine Old Testament stories in the Bible,” and they live up to that title! The Peace Maker uses political ploys as a platform and gives an interesting spin to 1 Samuel 8-25.It’s fascinating to see questions raised about current events in the news. The Peace Maker touches on right-to-life, stem-cell research, domestic violence, racism, and alcoholism, to name a few. Can a Christian effect change in government? Should convictions of one be inflicted on many? Abigail thought so, when she approached David. Make your own opinion, when you see how Michele’s characters carry out their roles in the book.We took The Peace Maker to another level, by inviting Michele to speak at our Women’s Retreat. Using her book, and basing our theme of “Fearless” on Abigail, we asked, “Are you fearless? Do you struggle to find courage in the midst of life’s challenges?”Michele helped us look at what equipped Abigail to stop the massacre against her household, and how her story applies to our stories, today. We contemplated steps to cast fear aside and decisions to equip us for action. Abigail became a living, breathing role model!Get a copy of The Peace Maker, and decide for yourself if it makes the Old Testament brand new. You’re in for a delightful ride!

Chelsea has been a peace maker and people pleaser since she was a small child, often at the cost of being true to her self . She tried to stand between her mother and alcoholic father and when he left she blamed herself and her mother for his problems. As a reporter doing an interview in college she meets and later marries an older man who is a rich and powerful U. S. Senator. She discovers that he and other members of his family are functioning alcoholics and though they talk about common good in public they care only for their own power. The nightmare only gets worse as he is tapped by his political party to run for president of the United States against a man who only wants the best for his country. This story deals with faith, politics, ethical and moral values and is both timely and an exciting read. The author has done a great job of bringing up most of the personal and social issues of today giving the reader a chance to make their own choices. A fascinating look at those in power and those that want to be and like everything else in life a story of history repeating itself. Good book and thought provoking. I highly recommend.

This is a good read. One critique concerns stem cell research, which seems the author did not fully research. Most Christians, obviously, oppose embryonic stem cell research. However, other stem cell research, e.g. bone marrow or placenta stem cells, are already being used to treat individuals without the moral objections. Otherwise, this is a worthy read, bringing a biblical story into the modern world and making it understandable.

Chessa Richards is the wife of a New York senator who is running for President of the United States. Her marriage is anything but perfect but with it being so much in the public eye, she does her best to cope with it. Leif Mitchell is a young governor of Kentucky who is running against Senator Richards for the candidacy. When the race starts getting close, the candidates will do anything to guarantee the win. Will they make the right choices? At what stakes will they stop?

This was a quick paced and hard to put down book with a couple of good twists. I really enjoyed the characters of Chessa and Leif and watching them develop before, during and after the campaign for presidency. There was a little bit of politics in the story but if you've watched any shows or movies about it, it is easy to follow. I am looking forwardto finding more books like this one to read in the future.

What an amazing, enthralling novel. Any reader will get caught up in the action living through the unfolding story that is on the mark for realism today. The characters seem like someone you might know, whether you want to or not. The book makes the Christian reader want to go back to the Bible to refresh his memory, while it will hopefully lead other readers there also out of curiosity to compare the events to the original Biblical story. This is a good thing! God bless the author!

The title"The Peace Maker" drew me in and the twists and turns of the story kept me intrigued for the most part. It's nice to read such an encouraging and well written book which includes scripture and other useful guides for our daily lives.
It was a bit too predictable to be a full five star.

The Peace Maker is an inspirational Christian fiction novel by author Michele Chynoweth. It’s loosely based on the biblical story of David and Abigail.

Since this is a political fiction book I thought it would be great to read during the country’s political year. Did this book meet my expectations? Yes! I would say it’s geared for YA -Adult and it’s best to read the whole book before making a judgment, including the epilogue.

My favorite character was Leif; singer, songwriter, and horse whisperer. He was the least of his brothers to climb the political ladder, yet he was strategically placed.

The author has very descriptive writing, which vicariously put me in the story. I finished this story in just a couple of days. I recommend the novel to fans of political fiction.

I really think the plot, the setting and the casting for this book were excellent. It was a marvelous idea and the casting of the characters was absolutely perfect. However, the writing was uneven. The writing is OK in the segments with action, but she spends a lot of time in explanations. Those sections aren't compelling. I ended up skimming during those times. I will say that I think she has a ton of promise and that she will only improve.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book and was difficult to put down. The Peace Maker puts a modern spin on the First Book of Samuel, and it inspired me to read the Biblical account of David and Abigail (I already knew bits and pieces of David's story, but had never read it in a larger context). At the beginning of the book, Michele Chynoweth includes a page showing how each character in the novel relates to his/her Biblical counterpart, which is helpful. This novel is definitely worth reading!
