Mehl Ramps Up the Suspense in This Brand-New U.S. Marshals Series

Mercy Brennan followed in her father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, but she has no interest in any other connection to him. A U.S. Marshal in St. Louis, Missouri, she's assigned to a joint task force with the St. Louis PD that puts her back into contact with her father and in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang.

When the gang has reason to believe Mercy has possession of some highly sensitive and incriminating information, her boss assigns Mark St. Laurent--a Deputy U.S. Marshal and Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until they can guarantee her safety.

Initially unaware of the danger she's in and uncomfortable working with Mark, Mercy's frustration escalates when she discovers the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark. It isn't until a freak ice storm hits, stranding them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office, that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy closing in to put their lives at imminent risk. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

Review

"A out-of-control roller coaster of a romantic suspense novel! The first book in the Defenders of Justice series has something for every fan of the genre, like secrets, lies, and people who pretend to be something they aren't. The characters are smart, cunning, and know how to use their wits to get them out of tight situations. The plot is fast paced and is not standard or run of the mill. Nancy Mehl has raised the bar with her new series."

From the Back Cover

Following in her absentee father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, U.S. Marshal Mercy Brennan has just recovered from being shot in the line of duty. And, unbeknownst to her, her father's recent reappearance in her life has put her in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang. Her boss assigns Deputy U.S. Marshal Mark St. Laurent--Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until her safety can be guaranteed.

Unaware of the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark, it isn't until a freak ice storm strands them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy to put them in great danger. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

Mehl handled these issues beautifully and it made for a great read
I had the absolute pleasure of reading Fatal Frost by Nancy Mehl today. Mercy Brennan is a U.S. Marshal following in her estranged father's footsteps. When the decisions that her father makes puts her in line with some of the most dangerous gangs; her boss and former ex-boyfriend U.S. Marshal Mark St. Laurent make the decision to protect her. Unbeknownst to Mercy these two have put her in protective custody, but with a mole in the headquarters their lives are at stake.Nancy Mehl approaches a very sensitive topic in today's time and writes about what could happen. Friends, this book is for a more mature audience. Though there wasn't extreme violence, but there was killings, and other topics that you might not want your child to read unless you have read prior. This being said, I think Ms. Mehl handled these issues beautifully and it made for a great read. If you're someone who likes action packed, who dunnit books this is for you. She layers the story with God's grace, as well as showing the reader that God does care about what is going on with your life and He does want the best for you. If you can relate to that then please go ahead and purchase the book at this site :)*Yo peeps I received this book from Bethany House for my honest opinion.

In her newest series, Defenders of Justice, readers are introduced to a U. S. Marshal character named Mercy Brennan. Mercy’s coworkers give her a nickname that implies how well guarded Mercy keeps her heart and life. As readers progress through the book, it is revealed why Mercy protects herself from what she believes will end up hurting or breaking her heart. Mercy has few friends from within the service and from other agencies, but with danger rapidly closing in on her life Mercy may have to face her past head on!
In a tale of danger, suspense and unending battles, the flavor of a great suspenseful tale is revealed. The author does more than simply write a good book; she draws her audience into the adventure of the story and keeps them engaged as the plot unfolds. At times, when I least expected, Nancy Mehl would bring a sudden change into the tale that would ramp up my heartbeat!
Nancy Mehl has written many books in her career and I have enjoyed reading her novels. Now, in her Defenders series, I was even more engrossed in the plot, the lives of her characters and the suspense that didn’t let up till the very end. Personally, I cannot wait until the next story of the series comes out so I can see where Mercy is as well as some of the supporting cast. Keep up the great storytelling Nancy!

Mercy Brennan is a US Marshall. Her best friend Tally is a St Louis police officer. Mercy is ok with it being them against the world - she's unwilling to allow anyone else into her inner circle, not even the man she truly cares about, fellow US Marshall Mark. Now the 3 of them are on the same case, and she worries it will get complicated, but she underestimates just how much danger they are all in.

Realistic premise, lots of action, and a thread of faith woven into this Christian mystery novel makes for an engaging story. Mercy is likeable and I loved her Godfather references. The romance doesn't overpower the rest of the story, but instead adds flavor to the relationship between characters. I felt like there was enough left unsaid until the end that it kept the suspense going while still ultimately wrapping things up before all was said and done.

This is the first Nancy Mehl book I've ever read and it won't be the last! Characters are strong but have their weaknesses. The storyline is solid but has a lot of twists and turns. It was a great story and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a great book to curl up with! Time for my second Nancy Mehl book!

Fatal Frost is a thrilling narrative mixing loyal officers betrayed by weak or greedy people, street gangs working with vicious drug cartels in St. Louis with Los Angeles connections, injuries exacerbated by a severe snow and ice storm, and a missing piece of vital evidence. I like the contemporary references to communications and situations.
I especially appreciate U.S. Deputy Marshal Mercy Brennan, an imperfect heroine who grows and changes during the novel. Many can relate to her changing relationship to God. These characters are so realistic that I had to remind myself that this is fiction, not a news story.
Fasten your seatbelts before reading this excellent first book in Nancy Mehl’s Defenders of Justice series, and then look forward to more books which follow.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fatal Frost, and recommend it highly.
I received a complimentary copy of Fatal Frost and was under no obligation to post a review.

To tell you the truth I was disappointed with the author's portrayal of people of color. If you're going to portray blacks with leading roles in your books, get to know some black people. It felt as if the author simply repeated some not so kind stereotypes and I would have preferred to be left out of your book rather than be so misrepresented. Notwithstanding, there were two "good" black characters (friends of the lead female characters) . The book was well written and easy to follow.

Pleasently surprised that this was a faith based action story about US Marshalls and police trying to stop a drug lord. For those that are not overly religious, no one walks around spouting direct scripture from the Bible and the dialogue about God seemed natural. And because of its religious nature no sex scenes (or weirdly mis-timed naughty talk where bullets are flying and yet the characters are thinking about humping one another, which happen in a book I read not too long ago :/ )

Where the book could have been better was the action and sequence of events. Agree with a few folks that you have to stretch reality a bit when it came to injuries and it seemed like they were constantly being ambushed or caught off-guard. I would like to think that an operation such as this would have been better planned and folks a bit more savvy, otherwise the witness protection program is in serious trouble.

Nevertheless, while the book was not gold, it was enjoyable and I would read another from this author. 3.5 rounded up.

I've found a new-to-me author that I just love! Nancy Mehl is now on my Favorite Authors list. She writes crime suspense that is just captivating---and clean! (Mehl is a Christian author.) In FATAL FROST, you'll meet U.S. Marshal Mercy Brennan and two of her male co-agents. Mercy doesn't realize her life is seriously threatened because of something incriminating to the cartel that she doesn't even know she has in her possession! Her ex-boyfriend, U.S. Marshal Mark St. Laurent, and her best friend, Lieutenant Tally Williams, and she must try to survive in an unknown location, during a near blizzard, with gang and cartel members on their way. The suspense is riveting. I did not want to put it down. The writing is so pleasant and smooth to follow; very enjoyable. This is the first in one of her series, and I WILL be reading many more. I give this novel 5 out of 5 stars!

Mercy has many ghost from her past to deal with, a father who leaves his wife, son and daughter to share the arms of another woman. A person who trusts in those around her is limited due to a failing father. She is a great Marshal in upholding the law but won't let anyone get near her heart. Is God really even there she questions. Read this book and you will believe in the miracle of answered prayers.

This book was a blast, being fast paced, dealing with personal deeply imbedded issues, a murderous cartel, betrayal and more. The characters are believable, and it’s all written without swearing etc. very very well done. Still the odd error escapes proof reading, but it’s easy to overlook when the story is a ripper.

Another great read from Ms. Mehl!
Great, complex protagonists with real issues that really resonated with me, especially Mercy. While I figured out certain plotlines midway, this didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story. I recommend this book and will definitely continue to follow this author's work.
