Geek Girl Rising: Inside the Sisterhood Shaking Up Tech Kindle Edition
"I don’t know much about tech, but I do know that these pioneer women are pretty dope. Geek Girl Rising gives a much needed voice to the fearless women paving an important path in the tech world, while forming a lasting sisterhood along the way.” - Kelly Ripa
Meet the women who aren’t asking permission from Silicon Valley to chase their dreams. They are going for it—building cutting-edge tech startups, investing in each other’s ventures, crushing male hacker stereotypes, and rallying the next generation of women in tech. With a nod to tech trailblazers like Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer, Geek Girl Rising introduces readers to the fearless female founders, technologists, and innovators fighting at a grassroots level for an ownership stake in the revolution that’s changing the way we live, work, and connect. Readers will meet Debbie Sterling, inventor of GoldieBlox, the first engineering toy for girls, which topples the notion that only boys can build; peek inside YouTube sensation Michelle Phan’s ipsy studios, where she is grooming the next generation of digital video stars while leading her own mega e-commerce beauty business; and tour the headquarters of The Muse, the hottest career site for millennials, and meet its intrepid CEO, Kathryn Minshew, who stared down sexism while raising millions of dollars to fund the company she co-founded. These women are the rebels proving that a female point of view matters in the age of technology and can rock big returns if you have a big idea and the passion to build it.

Riveting for men and women alike.” ―Zainab Ghadiyali, Co-Founder and CEO at Wogrammer, and former tech lead at Facebook

- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2017Geek Girl Rising was a wonderful surprise, in so many ways. First, as a woman in the “S” part of STEM, I found that I didn’t know much about the “T” part that involves entrepreneurship and start-up companies. The authors Heather Cabot and Samantha Walravens take you through that world and it was an eye-opener. I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur with a start-up company, but I am as they define it. Surprise! Second, the stories of the sisterhood of tech and tech start-ups was enlightening and heartening. I wish there were more stories of a true sisterhood in the “S” part of STEM – it too often doesn’t go in that direction. This book gave me concrete ideas about how to change that. Finally, who knew that a tech book could be so beautifully written with compelling personal narratives? Overall, a terrific book that EVERYONE in STEM and/or interested in entrepreneurship (from any field) should read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2020This book is a much needed spotlight on so many trailblazing women in tech! Samantha Walravens and Heather Cabot brilliantly capture the stories of amazing women--a true sisterhood, as they say--and elevate these untold her-stories that so often go untold or unnoticed. As an adult I loved reading this book--it was engaging, thought provoking and a delight to read--and I learned so many things that will help me my own journey. I also recommend this as a powerful resource for young women and girls. Research shows that "girls need to see it to be it," that the women they learn about or connect with change their ideas about identity and what it means to be a woman. This book is a tremendous gift to the next generation--it can literally change girl's and young women's lives, break outdated career stereotypes and and give girls a powerful perspective on who and what they can become!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2018Thoroughly researched, brilliantly written. Great read even for non-technical tech geeks, like me. Inspiring stories of perseverance and accomplishment. I purchased this book for friends in the tech space, at the forefront of STEM, and who have daughters whose aspirations know no limits. Gives me such hope for this next generation of women who will have equal opportunities to lead, create, and contribute. The landscape of women in tech is changing ... And, it's exciting!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2020I've been reading and listening to a number of women in tech books for the past year. This book and "Broadband" are two of my favorite titles out of my collection. Both books are very well researched, written, and entertaining as much as they are informative. It's a great read or listen on Audible.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2018Interesting to read about successful women, but this got repetitive pretty fast. Also, I could not understand why they had to keep describing what the women were wearing. Would they mention what men in the same situation were wearing?
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2017Learned much about women innovators and sisterhoods in technology. Many organizations to help women learn code and become tech innovators.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2017Wow! I never knew there were so many women starting technology companies across the country! This book delves deep into the personal and professional lives of women in Silicon Valley and other tech hubs (primarily in the US) who have started companies and found success in a primarily male startup world. I loved reading the "back stories" of founders like Sheila Marcelo (Care.com) and Michelle Phan (ipsy) who don't have tech backgrounds but started companies to solve a problem they were facing personally. An inspirational read for women and men alike!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017Samantha and Heather do an excellent job raising the issues women in technology face on a day to day basis. The struggle is real! Through their book, you learn that there is hope and ways to overcome the sexism and bias' out there. Strong and brave women are doing it every day. We as a community - both men and women - have a responsibility to change things for our daughters and all girls and women out there. In Sisterhood!
