My Sister's Bones: A Novel of Suspense Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 3,156 ratings

In the vein of Fiona Barton's The Widow and Renée Knight's Disclaimer, a psychological thriller about a war reporter who returns to her childhood home after her mother's death but becomes convinced that all is not well in the house next door—but is what she’s seeing real or a symptom of the trauma she suffered in Syria?

The One Person You Should Trust Is Lying to You…

Kate has spent fifteen years bringing global injustice home: as a decorated war reporter, she’s always in a place of conflict, writing about ordinary people in unimaginable situations. When her mother dies, Kate returns home from Syria for the funeral. But an incident with a young Syrian boy haunts her dreams, and when Kate sees a boy in the garden of the house next door—a house inhabited by an Iraqi refugee who claims her husband is away and she has no children—Kate becomes convinced that something is very wrong.

As she struggles to separate her memories of Syria from the quiet town in which she grew up—and also to reconcile her memories of a traumatic childhood with her sister’s insistence that all was not as Kate remembers—she begins to wonder what is actually true…and what is just in her mind.

In this gripping, timely debut, Nuala Ellwood brings us an unforgettable damaged character, a haunting , humanizing look at the Syrian conflict, and a deeply harrowing psychological thriller that readers won’t be able to put down.

This book is very well written - so much better than Girl on a Train (and I thoroughly enjoyed Girl on a Train).
The characters are well developed, the story line complex and the twists not exactly what you'd expect.
As soon as I finished the book, I lent it to my sister. It's that good.

I liked parts of this book but by the end, it was just over the top- too dramatic and unrealistic. The character development was lacking.

Beautifully written story incorporating the lives of sisters coming from a brutal childhood and their separate lives___one sister an accomplished journalist trying to cope with the horrors she witnessed in Aleppo and the other lost in alcoholism. The stories weave together chapter by chapter to a surprising end. Strength out of tragedy --a great book highly recommended.

Book was as described; very fast read, suspenseful, twists and turns!

This novel focusses on the psychological damage done when growing up with abusive alcoholics and how that damage carries through to your adult choices. I am not going into the story line, but I do recommend this book - so much so that I intend to buy the next book Elwood writes. The ravages of war, the damage of alcoholism and physical abuse - all were strong themes and I think the author carried them off. I often wonder if others read the same book or if our own backgrounds cause us to like or dislike a story as this book seems to have a lot of mixed reviews. Some of the characters were not hard to like, but I didn’t understand them.

Designed to be a psychological thriller, My Sister's Bones is freighted with too many subplots and thinly drawn characters that beg credulity. The alcoholic trope is overused to frame characters. They are stereotypes without individual distinction. There is too much dialogue at crisis points, further undermining the scene.

As with every novel there are elements one could nitpick about. The love interest albeit it had some merit wasn't needed. The heroine could use a bit of common sense occasionally but otherwise good character development for all the players. I admit I was surprised at many twists and turns and it did take me a while to unwrap the package, always a plus for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, twisty and atmospheric!

My Sister’s Bones, is a dark, atmospheric, twisty debut novel by Nuala Ellwood. We follow war reporter, Kate as she returns to her home in Herne Bay, England, after hearing about the death of her mother. Kate has an estranged relationship with her sister, Sally, who still lives in the town, and tries to make amends with her, even though Sally doesn’t want to hear anything more from her. But whilst she is home, Kate believes she has stumbled on a sinister secret, but how can she prove it when no one will listen to her?

Kate is haunted by the events that she has witnessed in Aleppo. She is suffering from PTSD and begins to hallucinate; she has dark dreams and visions about her time spent there. I found this aspect of the plot of My Sister’s Bones, absolutely harrowing, as we see Kate begin to crumble, and the scenes that she replays in her mind are very vivid and disturbing. Nuala Ellwood takes us into the heart of the troubles that have been going on in Syria and she brings them to the forefront of your mind and in these sections of the novel, the writing is very powerful. We also learn that Kate has been arrested, but we don’t yet know what it is that she is supposed to have done. Here the intrigue kept me turning those pages as I wanted to find out what had happened to Kate and why she was in a police station.

As well as Kate’s backstory as a war reporter, we also learn of the trauma that she and her sister faced in their childhood. Nuala peels back the layers of their relationship as the novel develops and there are some shocking twists and turns that will leave you reeling.

My Sister’s Bones is a very well written, multi layered novel. Nuala’s writing pulls you into Kate’s troubled world and it makes for an engaging and intriguing read. She is certainly a writer to watch out for and I can't wait to see what she will write next.

I liked Kate's voice: she was a strong, flawed woman with a challenging job. I especially liked reading about Syria, about the conflict there and about Nidal. This is an unusual background for a domestic thriller and I couldn't imagine the outcome; that took me by surprise. However, I didn't enjoy Sally's pov. I found myself skimming through her narrative. Still, overall, a good read.
