One More Warbler: A Life with Birds Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 73 ratings

One of America’s foremost birders recounts his birding adventures as well as his friendships with numerous luminaries.

Victor Emanuel is widely considered one of America’s leading birders. He has observed more than six thousand species during travels that have taken him to every continent. He founded the largest company in the world specializing in birding tours and one of the most respected ones in ecotourism. Emanuel has received some of birding’s highest honors, including the Roger Tory Peterson Award from the American Birding Association and the Arthur A. Allen Award from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. He also started the first birding camps for young people, which he considers one of his greatest achievements.

In
One More Warbler, Emanuel recalls a lifetime of birding adventures—from his childhood sighting of a male Cardinal that ignited his passion for birds to a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Asia to observe all eight species of cranes of that continent. He tells fascinating stories of meeting his mentors who taught him about birds, nature, and conservation, and later, his close circle of friends—Ted Parker, Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton, Roger Tory Peterson, and others—who he frequently birded and traveled with around the world. Emanuel writes about the sighting of an Eskimo Curlew, thought to be extinct, on Galveston Island; setting an all-time national record during the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count; attempting to see the Imperial Woodpecker in northwestern Mexico; and birding on the far-flung island of Attu on the Aleutian chain. Over the years, Emanuel became a dedicated mentor himself, teaching hundreds of young people the joys and enrichment of birding. “Birds changed my life,” says Emanuel, and his stories make clear how a deep connection to the natural world can change everyone’s life.

“Whether he is recounting his experiences with raptors in Turkey, rose-ringed parakeets in India, or black-and-white owls in Panama, Emanuel’s love of the natural world is always on display. A charming narrative for avid birders and armchair nature lovers, sure to inspire at least a few flights of fancy.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Victor Emanuel is a remarkable man who found his mentors in birding and went on to become a leader in that community for the past fifty years. In One More Warbler, Victor shares his wide-ranging adventures across the globe, including the story of his enormously influential ecotourism company, and the reasons why he become a mentor himself to whole generations of young ornithologists. It’s a fascinating read.” —Kenn Kaufman, author of Kingbird Highway

“This book is classic Victor: a tapestry of anecdotes, adventures, philosophical musings, and tributes to people, all woven together by glowing words of admiration for the rich diversity of birds that grace our lives, and define his.” —John Fitzpatrick, Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Editorial Reviews

Review

Geopolitically sensitive and savvy, and already looking ahead to habitat preservation, Mr. Emanuel was holistic from the very beginning…Mr. Emanuel's passion for birds was always placed within a larger philosophical framework. Yet even as he quotes one of the maxims at Delphi—'nothing in excess'—he can't help pushing to see, on a spring evening before a dinner party, 'just one more warbler.' Such love of discovery is the hum under the magical stories Mr. Emanuel tells. ― Wall Street Journal Published On: 2019-05-17

"Birding with Victor Emanuel will change the way you see the natural world. It’s an experience everyone should have." (Laura Bush)

"Long before anyone used the word ‘ecotourism,’ Victor Emanuel had devoted his life to the mission of sharing with others his passion for birds and nature. His literary sophistication, boundless curiosity, commitment to mentoring, and raw, childlike exuberance have earned him friendships with writers, filmmakers, politicians, and educators the world over. This book is classic Victor: a tapestry of anecdotes, adventures, philosophical musings, and tributes to people, all woven together by glowing words of admiration for the rich diversity of birds that grace our lives, and define his." (John Fitzpatrick, Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology)

As a lifetime birder of limited skills and accomplishment I have great admiration for those like Victor Emmanuel, Peter Dunne, Kenn Kaufman, Barry Zimmer, and John Fitzpatrick all expert birders with profound appreciations of the awesomeness and complexities of the natural world. I have been in the field with all of them and have marveled not only at their birding skills but by how much they can teach about the relation of birds and our environment. Their passion and enthusiasm is infectious.
Reading "One More Warbler " has the same effect. I want to get right back out in the field and expand my experiences in the time that life affords. For almost three decades I've been happy and content limiting my birding to the lower 48 but now, having read Victor Emmanuel's accounts of birding in Mexico, Central America, and South America, I'm primed to renew and expand some birding experiences.
Few books stir so much personal ambition while simultaneously providing so much reading pleasure. "One More Warbler" belongs in the same class as Peterson's and Fisher's "Wild America"; Kaufman's "Kingbird Highway"; and Weidensaul's "Living on the Wind" and "Return to Wild America". It is every bit as enjoyable as Edwin Way Teale's several volumes of his seasonal travels through North America which I read some years ago.
I echo what the reviewers Barry and Brock have written about the author. He is a man of many parts and substantial accomplishment. I admire him particularly for what his having introduced so many youngsters to the wonders of birding and the natural world.
Beyond birding "One More Warbler" is an instructive account of a life well lived and rich in experience. The writing and editing are first rate. I hope we will have more to read from Victor Emmanuel.

Interesting and enjoyable. I’ve done a number of trips with VENT so it was very interesting to learn how things started.

As a birder of almost 40 years, I was excited when word of this memoir first showed up. I acquired the Kindle edition soon after its publication and have now finished the book. It is a wonderful work by an accomplished naturalist and entrepreneur. (Caveat, I have known Victor for well more than 20 years and have been a guest on several of his company's tours.) But still, I was delighted to learn details of his life and career that I had not known. More important, the book is as interesting and fun as the tours, and Victor is as fine a storyteller as he and his guides are mentors.

Victor focuses about equally on birds and the people and places that influenced him as he built his company, which, the last time I looked, was the largest birding tour guiding business in the world. He recounts many touching and fascinating stories, some of which include such luminaries as Peter Matthiessen and Roger Tory Peterson.

Like "The Big Year," this is a book for both birders and non-birders. It's just a good story worth telling and reading, and Victor has told it well.

This is a marvelous book, for birders and non-birders alike. It is an adventure story, a saga, beginning with a single bird sighting and expanding to encompass the world. It’s a personal story too, of hardship, false starts and the awkward beginnings of ecotourism in our time.

As much about birds, the memoir is built around the character of key people along the way…Roger Tory Petersen, Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton and of course Emanuel himself, along with dozens of heroic unsung ornithologists.

Well written and it drives relentlessly toward its tantalizing end. Highly recommended.
