Wrangler's Challenge (Wind River Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,202 ratings

Two military veterans find solace, and each other, on a horse ranch in this romance from the New York Times–bestselling author of Wind River Undercover.

For Noah Mabry, it’s easier sometimes to relate to the dogs and horses he trains than to other people. Ever since his marriage became a casualty of the war in Afghanistan—torn apart by the PTSD he brought back with him—he prefers to be on his own. At the Bar C Ranch in Wyoming, where he works with a crew of fellow military vets, his gentle patience helps tame even the rowdiest mustang—but he’s about to meet a woman who needs a healing touch he’s not sure he can give.

Dair Wilson, a half-Comanche ex-Marine who lost a foot to an IED, has been hired on to assist Noah, but her deepest wounds aren’t visible. Growing up in an abusive home, she learned not to trust men, even ones who seem nothing but kind. After a wild horse sends her sprawling, the attentive care she receives from the Bar C family—and especially from Noah—is enough to convince her she’s found a place she can finally breathe easy. But one angry, damaged man poses a threat not only to Dair and Noah, but to everyone who’s built a new home at the Bar C…

Lindsay McKenna is the pseudonym of award-winning author Eileen Nauman. With more than 210 titles to her credit and approximately 23 million books sold in 33 countries worldwide, Lindsay is one of the most distinguished authors in the women's fiction genre. She is the recipient of many awards, including six RT Book Reviews awards (including best military romance author) and an RT Book Reviews Career Achievement Award. In 1999, foreseeing the emergence of ebooks, she became the first bestselling women's fiction author to exclusively release a new title digitally.

She is releasing a new family saga-series, Delos, in October 2015. NOWHERE TO HIDE, 10.13.2015 will be published by her. Morgan's Mercenaries, 45 books strong, has been the longest running saga-series in publishing history. She is now creating another family and Delos Series will bring romantic suspense, which she is famous for writing, to her many readers. For more, go to her website.

In recognition of her status as one of the originators of the military adventure/romance genre, Lindsay is affectionately known as "The Top Gun of Women's Military Fiction." Lindsay comes by her military knowledge and interest honestly--by continuing a family tradition of serving in the U.S. Navy. Her father, who served on three different destroyers in the Pacific theater during World War II, instilled a strong sense of patriotism and duty in his daughter.

So, upon graduating high school, Lindsay--already a student pilot--continued the family custom by enlisting in the U.S. Navy and serving three years (1964-67) as an AG3--Aerographer's Mate Third Class (meteorologist).

Since that time Lindsay has kept up her interest in test piloting and training as research for her military romance novels. In pursuit of authenticity, she has undergone high-altitude hyperbaric chamber training at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, flown an Air Force T-38 "chase plane" out of  Edwards Air Force Base in California, undertaken two missions (a 12-hour day mission and a five-hour night mission) in an Air Force Strategic Air Command  (SAC) B-52 bomber out of K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan, flown in a Falcon Coast Guard jet from Coast  Guard Miami Air Station in Florida and participated in search-and-rescue helicopter and training missions out of the Coast Guard Port Angeles in Washington.

Naturally, Lindsay's military experience is the backbone of her writing--in addition to being credited with writing the first military romance novel (Captive of Fate, 1983), she has created a thriving sub-genre within the romance field. It is, therefore, no surprise that her many experiences in the U.S. Navy are a backdrop for her upcoming Operation: Shadow Warriors series.

Of course, Lindsay's interests don't end with the military. Research for other novels has pushed her into becoming intimately acquainted with other professions that serve the common good. From 1981 to 1983, she served as a volunteer firefighter with the West Point Volunteer Fire Department in Ohio and helped pioneer the role of female firefighters. And from 1996 to 2000, Lindsay was registered as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic in Arizona--expertise that is reflected in emergency and accident situations in her books.

The Bar C Ranch in Wind River Valley is owned and staffed by vets. The entire staff is made up of military veterans who have all come together to work there, become a family, and support one another through PTSD and other issues from their military service. Dair is an ex-Marine that lost the lower part of a leg to an IED in Afghanistan. While recovering at the military hospital in Bethesda she was able to go on an outing to a nearby ranch where she met Noah. They shared an amazing kiss and never thought they would see one another again. Dair has now returned to her home state of Wyoming looking for work. Since her Comanche grandmother taught her to train horses from a young age, she is a great candidate for the assistant horse trainer position at the Bar C Ranch. During her interview, she finds out that Noah is the horse trainer she would be assisting at the Bar C. Can Dair deal with her feelings of not being a whole woman in order to let Noah into her life? Can Noah learn from his failed marriage in order to have a strong relationship with Dair?

Dair is a strong woman who feels vulnerable because of her amputation. The author did a good job of portraying the emotions of a recent amputee and the daily struggles they deal with. Noah is a good man who just wants to care for and protect Dair. I found their love story inspiring. The characters are well developed and the plot is good but it did move a bit slow for my taste. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and all of the characters in it. I love that the entire ranch is run by veterans and that they have their Friday night group “meetings” that include a therapist. Our military veterans don’t get enough support from the public or the people around them so it was nice to see them band together to support one another. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series of books.

This is a heart wrenching story. Ms. McKenna does a terrific job of describing the physical and emotional toll taken on an amputee—in this case on a woman who lost her foot and part of her leg to an IED. She has created a character with the baggage of a childhood of abuse that has followed her throughout her life. The storyline recreates that trauma in adulthood and the toll it takes is almost insurmountable. The sensitivity and empathy created by the author is both genuine and authentic to the situation.

The only thing keeping this book from a five-star rating is the continual repetition of themes that borders on bothersome and unnecessary. It seems to be part and parcel of the author’s style, but a bit of editing would improve the delivery of what is an exceptional story.

McKenna excels at crafting characters who are well-rounded and genuine. As an extra bonus, learned a lot about prosthetics. I really loved this couple!

The characters created by the author for this book about the Bar C Ranch are totally amazing. Each person associated with the Ranch from the owners and workers whose sole purpose is to help military Vets. Many of the people are also struggling with insecurities and PTSD. This is a very captivating story and easy for the reader to become emotionally involved with this story.

I love this series so far. It is intriguing and interesting at the sometime. I enjoy reading the stories because it give non-military women an understanding of what military service men and women have experienced with PTSD, and also some helpful hints on how to deal with them. Can not wait to start the next book.

The storyline for this was good but I felt the dialogue was forced and not believable. There were many conversations that had me shaking my head. For example Noah said “ I wanted to have this conversation when we weren’t in the throes of passion”. I’m sorry I just can’t follow that one. I have to admit I skimmed through the second half of the book because of the dialogue.

I loved it! This is a very well written book which encompasses the lives of our military vets and the challenges they face, such as: coping with the PTSD, and the ones who come back as amputee's still trying to deal with their anxiety over their disfugurment, and then there's also the general worry of being accepted back into civilian life. Vets---especially those who been in a major combat areas--- are a very special breed. There are things they've seen, and lived through, that most of us civilians could never cope with. This book also brings up the fact that the VA needs work, and I've seen that myself first hand, because my own Hubby is a Vet.

IMO- All of the dialogue, and the events that take place within this story all seem quite real. Either this author knows someone personally who's gone through this, or she did one heck of a job doing fact checks. Because these things are still a very real thing, even in today's world.

I loved the way Noah was so dedicated, and so patient with Dair. She was not only going through a tough time trying to accept the fact that she wasn't whole anymore, but she was also dealing with residual effects of having an abusive father. That's a lot to go through, for anyone. I thought everything about this book was great.....except for the way it ended. Sure, they had sort of a HEA, if you want to call it that, but I wanted to see them tie the knot. Oh well, maybe we'll get to see them do that in the next book.

Totally blown away with this story. A well written book which encompasses the lives of our military vets, the PTSD, the anxiety and the general worry of being accepted back into civilian life.

Dair, cam out from Afghanistan, when a black ops mission goes south. Dair was a WMD dog handler and Zeus was her partner. Zeus failed to detect an IED, which vaporized Zeus and left Dair one leg short.

She returns to Wind River in Wyoming, where she came from. She met up with Shay and Reese Lockhart from the Bar C, becomes a wrangled and for the first time, truly happy.

A happy ending is guaranteed for the vets. Highly recommend!!

Must admit the beginning of this book confused me. At first Noah acted like he didnt know Dair was coming to the ranch. At the end of book 3, both Noah and Harper shared the news of Dairs prominent arrival with Kira and Garret. Ray being back on the farm was another cause of confusion.
Not sure what the heck to expect in book5.

The characters are so well developed and the storyline just flows through all the twists and turns happening along the way. The courage these people have is unbelievable. What a good author. I highly recommend this book. I just bought the next book in this series and am starting it as soon as I finish this review.
