Loved it ! Frederick suffers from ennui following his return from the war. Georgiana would like to escape an arranged marriage and a wicked stepmother. How they accomplish that in Regency England makes an interesting and fun read. Georgiana battles The Ton so both she and Frederick have their HEA. Merrill is my go to Regency author.

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the opportunity to read A Convenient Bride for the Soldier. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Merrill, and I enjoyed the story. It did take me time to warm up to the characters, but the plot kept me engaged until I grew to like them. I was very glad they found their happy ending.

The pacing is nice and steady, and I enjoyed the secondary characters a great deal. I will definitely look for other books in the series. The romance between Georgianna and Frederick was very satisfying. If you enjoy a story with an intriguing plot and engaging characters, then you will enjoy A Convenient Bride for the Soldier. Happy reading!

Georgiana is horrified when her father and step-mother give her the ultimatum. She must marry her step-mother's cousin. It's time she wed and they don't see why she's rejecting him. But Georgiana has heard horrible things about him and decides to enter a pleasure house to catch him in the act. Little does she know that he wants her for her dowry just as much as he wants her for other, more horrifying things. But her plans go awry and Captain Challenger rushes to the rescue. The outcome is not what either wanted. But they must make the best of it and move forward.

I love regency fiction so picked this book hoping it was all about romance and intrigue. It was, but there seemed to be missing the usual element from the typical regency romance that I enjoy. That isn't to say it wasn't a fun book, it just didn't really fit my style. The author did a great job of creating tension and angst. But the chemistry between the two was slightly off to me. The majority of the book was focused on their relationship, or lack of it, and Mr. Challenger's business issues. I would have preferred less angst and fighting and more connections. So overall, this was a nice story to read, but it didn't really fit with what I was hoping it would be.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This first novel in a quartet of related stories is excellent. It sets the stage for the others and also works as an individual story.

Halfway through and I am thoroughly annoyed by the young woman lead. She is a total brat. I also find her unlikable and unrealistic as a society bred young lady. I like the men and the storyline.

The author should have removed at least half the rambling text from the first half of the book.

Unfortunately the other books in the series do need you to slog your way through the gosh awful writing in this one. Dear editor, please remove half of this mess in future versions.

That said, skim it quickly and get on with series events!!!

Arrrggghhhh frustrating read that I wish I could extensively edit.

I loved this story and can't wait to read the rest of the Wicked Gentlemen series.
It was a funny but poignant read and they both earned their happy ever afters.

Very pleasant read. We have the combination of an impulsive, but loving girl and a reclusive guy who is, of course, not interested in marriage. Georgiana's impulsiveness and curiosity get her in big trouble and it's up to Frederick to rescue her by offering a loveless marriage of convenience.

I had not read a Christine Merrill book for a while and was very pleased to see some lovely "sparkles" of clever writing. By that, I mean clever turns of a phrase, similes, etc. They really added to my enjoyment of the story.

Not up to the level of her other books. It was the first one where I skipped to the end. I was disappointed ....

I’ve now read all the books in this series and they were great stories but completely different. Georgiana is being pushed to marry a not nice someone, so auctions her virginity and ends up having to wed ex-soldier Fred Challenger. They are attracted to each other but it takes some time before they admit to it - lovely romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hugely disappointing

I have read and enjoyed several other books by this author previously but from my perspective this story is not one of her best. I am out of step with the other reviewers who seemed to be charmed by this tale.
The main characters, Fred and Georgiana (George) were dull and juvenile respectively; the pompous hero's behaviour was difficult to understand and the juvenile heroine's was rash and ill-considered, neither had much to commend them. It was not an easy read and I found myself skipping through pages to get to the end quickly. It feels a bit like a 70's novel, edited to make it seem current. The main characters lacked depth and I wasn't interested in them, glad when it was over.
