Japanese Battleships: Fuso & Ise Classes (ShipCraft Book 24) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

This fully illustrated guide offers historical context and step-by-step instruction for building and modifying Japanese battleship models.

This volume in the ShipCraft series covers the two related classes of Japanese 14in-gunned battleships, originally built during the First World War but subsequently reconstructed. These ships are famous for their towering forward superstructure, usually described as a pagoda bridge, that they featured when rebuilt. The Ise-class ships underwent further reconstruction during the Second World War to emerge as a unique hybrid of battleship and aircraft carrier to compensate for fleet carriers sunk earlier in the war.

This lavishly illustrated guide takes readers through a brief history of the Fuso-class and Ise-class ships, highlighting differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers. It features color profiles of paint schemes as well as detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This volume also includes a photographic survey of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales and a section on further research references

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Pagoda-style structures were a distinguishing feature of Imperial Japanese Navy battleships, and none were as extravagant as those on the Fuso and Ise-class vessels. Originally planned during World War One as a single rank of four hulls, the first two (Fuso and Yamashio) differed from the final pair (Ise and Hyuga), regarded as a separate class. Their development, careers and fates are described, combined with good contemporary images, intermingled with artist's impression to highlight differing configurations. Notably, as US Navy airpower devastated Japan's carriers, both Ise-class units would be converted into hybrid carriers battleships, although this was merely a prelude to further modification. Kits and accessory reviews are provided for both classes, from 1/1250 to 1/144 scales (although the latter is just a main twin-gun turret). Almost a third of the book is then devoted to modelling, with examples from a variety of renowned maritime builders, in full hull and waterline configurations, all adorned with scratch-built or after-market detail. Finally, the upgrades and modifications carried out on each vessel during their careers are described in depth, supplemented by superb scale drawings."

We are not blessed unfortunatly to have many photos of japanese warships so many of the photos in this book may be familliar, for this reason I try not to get too many books on the IJN. However the text and line drawings are well done.

If you are familiar with the ShipCraft series, this will tell you what you already know. Superb photos of outstanding replicas of these important ships, a short history, camouflage drawing and more are packed into this book. Prior to reading it, I really had no idea about these ships beyond their fantastic looking "pagoda" super structures. Now I am informed as to the differences, similarities, history, and model making possibilities for all four of them. Well done, as usual.

Seaforth books rock. Very pleased with the format and content. Great for modellers.

Period photos, a fairly complete basic history of the ships, a listing & pictures of most available models & accessories, color profiles, & more is what you get on 64 pages of stout glossy paper. Not being much of a ship modeler, I can still appreciate the work involved as well as the very nicely done finished products shown here. A lot of bang for not too many bucks.

Good basic coverage of the 4 slow battleships in these 2 classes, Fuso, Yamashiro,Ise, & Hyuga from the early post WW1 era through their reconstructions & alterations up until 1945 including the rather useless carrier/battleship conversions of Ise & Hyuga in 1943..
