A Compelling Novel of Forgiveness and Hope from Leading Author Tracie Peterson

Hope Flanagan survived the massacre at the Whitman Mission, but at terrible personal cost. Safe now in Oregon City, she lives with her sisters, Grace and Mercy, and Grace's new husband, Alex. As she spends her days tending their flock of sheep, Hope's mind and soul are slowly healing. Yet, though she was once surrounded by suitors, she has no interest in giving her heart again after the man she loved died in her arms.

Hope's precarious new peace is shattered when those responsible for the massacre are captured and put on trial. She is asked to testify against them, but she's not sure she can bear to relive the events of those horrific days.

As Hope struggles to free herself from the pain of her past, Lance Kenner, an Army lieutenant, brings an unexpected ray of light into her life. But what will Lance think of her if he learns the truth behind her anguish? And what secrets lie in

From the Inside Flap

"You can't be serious." Hope Flanagan looked at the man who sat opposite her. "You expect me to testify in the Cayuse trial."

Hope twisted her skirt in her hands, thankful the table hid her actions. For the last two and a half years, she had worked to forget that awful day in November when the Cayuse attacked the Whitman Mission. Then, in a single moment, this man brought it all back to her. She remembered the kitchen at the mission on that day. Sitting beside John Sager, the boy she'd hoped to marry. She had thought life perfect. She'd never wanted to come west to Oregon, but when she fell in love, everything changed.

It changed again when Tomahas and Telokite--two Cayuse chiefs--showed up at the mission house.

"Miss Flanagan, I know this is difficult."

She fixed the attorney with a look that made him grimace. She could barely force out her words. "You know nothing."|

From the Back Cover

Shackled by Her Past, One Woman Searches for Healing, Forgiveness, and Love

Hope Flanagan survived the massacre at the Whitman Mission, but at terrible personal cost. Safe now in Oregon City, the gentle rhythm of tending her family's flock of sheep is slowly healing her mind and soul, but her precarious new peace is shattered when Hope is asked to testify against the Cayuse responsible for the massacre. She's not sure she can bear to relive the events of those horrific days, but neither can she risk her attackers being released if she doesn't tell her story.

As Hope struggles to make her choice, an Army lieutenant named Lance Kenner becomes an unexpected ray of light in her life. Perhaps she is still capable of love after all. But will Lance still want her if he learns the whole truth of what happened to her at the mission? Or are the secrets that lie in his own past more troubling?

"Peterson creates believable 19th-century characters that will resonate with readers. . . . The characters learn how to rely on God and the Bible in hard circumstances, which doesn't feel trite but hard-earned. This continuation of the Heart of the Frontier series is sure to delight Peterson fans and win her new ones."--
Publishers Weekly

"Peterson's second book in the Heart of the Frontier series is a moving tearjerker about fear and forgiveness and the importance of having hope. Peterson writes compelling and accurate historical fiction with strong, likable characters. . . . Faith is a central theme here, and inspirational readers can appreciate how Peterson tackles how her characters reconcile themselves spiritually when trouble and sorrows strike. Beloved Hope is a wonderful story with a tender romance that fans will want to pick up."

Great series! Love these sisters.

Great series! Love these sisters.
I had to read the first book, Treasured Grace, in the “Heart of the Frontier” series; and I’m so glad I did. Beloved Hope was all the better because I had fallen in love with the deep, complicated woman named Hope before the book even began. Then to see how Peterson unwound her story and developed her even further was a real treat. We were introduced to Hope as a secondary character in the first book. But, in Beloved Hope she becomes the main character and we get to hear more of her and understand her complicated experiences and personality. Of the three sisters it seems that Hope experiences the most tragedy so to be a part of the rest of her story unfolding was so engaging. Peterson does a great job of helping you get to know her characters, leaving you like you feel is if you know them. I was so grateful to see Hope find joy in her life, and move forward from all that happened to her at the Whitman House Massacre. (The main plot of the first book, which was a really interesting read and the historical context makes it even more so.)Peterson’s stories are always a good read, this series is no exception, and I encourage you to snag the whole series! Now on to Cherished Mercy. Thanks to the Baker Publishing Group for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Tracie Peterson is a very good writer.
Her books are interesting, the characters are good.
There is always some kind of excitement going on.
I like that they have lots of scripture, they are clean romance but they are still real and have real life happenings.

I’m a fan of Tracy Peterson. Her books are all well written. This one I liked a lot. Good story filled with compassion. Reading about how hard frontier life was for our ancestors gives a deep respect for what women, and men, endured. The only disappointment I have in these stories is the endings. They chop off. In the case of this book, it was the wedding and the birth of a baby. So much led up to these events, then within a few sentences, THE END. Still a book worth reading. Just be prepared for a sudden stop.

This series is about the Marcus Whitman mission and the Indian attack in which several white settlers were killed and many women kidnapped. Mercy was one of the women taken and violated by the Indians. She has enveloped herself with hatred for the man primarily responsible for her rape. Now, two years after the attack and rescue of the women, he and 4 other Indian men are on trial. Asked to testify, Hope finds herself reliving the nightmare. When it looks like the Indians may be pardoned, Mercy cannot live with the thought of her tormentor going free. She sneaks into the jail intent o killing him, but is stopped by Lieutenant Lance Kenner.
Lance sympathizes with Mercy and her desire for vengeance. He also has been longing for the death of the person he holds responsible for the loss of his family. But even as Lance learns that his nemesis is nearby, he finds himself turning to God in search of healing and peace. Mercy also finds herself on a similar journey.
This is a beautiful story about the healing power of faith in Jesus Christ and his atonement.

I am a heavy reader of historic western romance novels, and Tracie Peterson is one of my most favorite authors. She never disappoints, and once again, this series is amazing. The best I have read in quite some time. Unlike the novella’s that seem to be so popular these days, that end way too soon, her books are filled with so much information you feel like you know the people in the stories and live through their drama, they also end way too soon, but because you don’t want the story to end. Thanks Tracie for you amazing story telling abilities!

A real blessing. Ms. Peterson has a real gift from God and each book never fails to capture my attention. Filled with love, faith, hope, forgiveness, action, BELOVED HOPE portrays the importance of releasing fear, anger, and hatred to our Father God who understands and gently but firmly brings healing. I love the relational bonds and importance of family and friends. This book won't disappoint, but read Book 1 first. I look forward to Book 3!

Tracie writes so that it is easy to get into the book. I so enjoy her way of bringing in practical encouragement through the character’s conversations of God’s hand working in their lives. Thank you Tracie.

For those of you who, like me, are looking for more than just “clean” romantic fiction, this is such a book. The plot is certainly engaging, but the spiritual struggles and the growing faith of the characters are at the heart of the story. This book examines spiritual truths about salvation, forgiveness, suffering, honesty, fear, and trust in God. Scriptures are not merely quoted at the start of the book as occurs in some so-called Christian novels. Here, the characters seek to understand biblical principles and live them out, sometimes imperfectly. Christian fiction should challenge, reaffirm, and grow the reader’s walk with the Lord. This book does just that.

I like how this book deals with a person's past and forgiveness. While it simplifies the issues somewhat it still tackles them.
