Review

Named one of the "25 Best Poetry Books for Teens"
(TeachThought)

"...written in the style of an old mix tape (OMG, miss those). Side A is all about life, love, death, hurt, endings, beginnings, family, relationships, and so much more. Side B takes readers on a different journey, utilizing blackout poetry to 'remix' the work Cook compiled on Side A. Pretty cool." (E. CE Miller, Bustle)

About the Author

Alicia Cook is a multi-award-winning writer and mental health and addiction awareness advocate based in Newark, New Jersey. An essayist and speaker, her activism to fight the opioid epidemic is far-reaching and has garnered a worldwide readership. She has her own episode on the Emmy-nominated American PBS series Here’s the Story. She has since broadened the scope of her work to include other sensitive topics impacting our lives today.

I enjoy her poems :)
I keep on rereading her poems because they’re just that good!! Bought her others poetry books too because they’re soooo gonna make you feel all the feelings you can’t describe in words. Alicia Cook is really my favorite modern poet. I’m glad I accidentally found her in Barnes & Noble in Honolulu!! Her book’s artworks are very eye catching but her poems stole my heart. :) Buy them if you love and enjoy reading poems, they’re soooo worth it!

Alicia's book is astoundingly unique and is so much more than just poetry. One of the first things I noticed when I picked up Alicia’s book was the layout. It was designed exactly like a mix tape. The first 50 pages being called, “side A” while the rest were titled “side B.” Side A was the poems and side B was the remixes of her poems.

To compliment the mix-tape vibe she also adds at the bottom of each page the song she was listening to when she wrote it. I thought the layout was so unlike anything I had seen, and right away I knew I was going to love her book before even reading the words on the pages.

The second thing I found amazing about her book was that all of the profits made from the book were going directly to, Willow Tree Center in New Jersey, for those struggling with addiction. I later discovered that this was because she wanted to honor of her cousin who died 10 years ago of a heroine overdose.

Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in poetry.

I loved how unique this book was. I have read a couple of modern poetry books but this may be one of my favorites to date.

The “currently listening to” sections at the end of every poem made the poems all the more beautiful for me. As an avid music and book lover myself this was a perfect remix of stuff I’ve been feeling lately too (no pun intended). Yes, there were parts I didn’t fully understand because I may not have gone through the same things but every human experiences certain feelings in common so I love the book despite any incomprehensible moments for me.

Blackout poetry is amazing as well so I loved how Alicia Cook incorporated this into her poems for side B. Her versions of the black out poems were so good, very apt to the poem and song themselves.

Five stars and well worth the money for me!

Alicia, where do I even begin with this work of art? I don't care who you are, you can't read this book of poetry, and not feel something deeply to your core. Her words move me in a way that no other artist has been able to do, and the voice that she has is something to be admired, and looked up to. "Stuff I've been feeling lately" is relatable, humanistic, and moving. The little additions she made to the book, such as the songs she was currently listening to, is what sets her apart from other writers. I can honestly say she has been one of the most influential people I have ever come across, and long story short, you will not be disappointed if you purchase this book. I will recommend to everyone, and anyone. Alicia, you are amazing.

    Love,
    your friend, @in.my.own.words

It's alright.. I just read Rupi Kaur's milk and honey And it was deep, honest, & relatable. I'm not going to lie I ordered this book based off the reviews the first page tells you it fiction so it set the tone for me. Wasn't really into it ..... It's too random for me not really themed. Like if this was a diary I stumbled across accidentally I wouldn't even want to read the secrets. 3 stars because I respect the creativity it's super genius the cassette tape, the tracks....

First off I want to say the cover is just so capturing! I loveee music so this really did it for me. I think it's so amazing how each page had a song to the poem; some of which I love to jam too ! Lol but the content of this book literally made me feel like I was by the authors side experiencing everything. The stories she shared had depth, pain and resilience. It was pure and real and so many gems ! If you see my picture I have many pages to look back at! Great readddd
