After graduating from the University of Texas with a BA in Latin, he has spent the last six years as a tutor and public school Latin teacher. He resides outside of Austin in the beautiful Texas Hill Country with his wife and two children. You can follow his Latin Twitter account @magistertalley.

I got it to help me have amusing conversations with my Latin speaking cousin. However I must say the author writes too much about pronunciation. It's distracting to be looking at diacritical marks.

This book is amazing. My boyfriend and I have recently tried learning Latin just beccause, well, to be honest work is just slow for us so we wanted to do something productive. We picked up a few basic books to learn how to speak latin with because well, carpe diem :) This boook was honestly the best way to learn! It was easy to get through because of its easy-to-learn and easy-to-read style. Unlike some of the other books that we read, this book kept it super real with its funny slang, good sense of humor and pretty fun games. I mean, who doesn't need to learn how to say Hello, girl neither with the smallest nose nor with a pretty foot nor with black eyes... hahaha! This book had us cracking up and enjoying the journey the entire time. If you don't know how to have a good time, I wouldn't recommend this book. It's definitely a fun approach of learning latin and is very different from the classic forms of learning. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn some actual latin, and have a good time doing it! This is the perfect book to do with a partner, it's definitely the type of book you will enjoy practicing with someone else, at least in my opinion. Then again, everything in life is more fun with a partner:P

There are many reasons to learn Latin – in fact, so many reasons that we may wonder why many schools have stopped teaching it formally. Veni Vidi Didici, is organized to support students using Latin to understand English grammar and to see the relevance of Latin in modern life. Both teachers and students can use this book. Most educators agree that having an understanding of Latin is the best way to learn any Romance language or learn a second Romance language. The author of Veni Vidi Didici let’s us understand that we know more Latin than we think we do. Students learn Latin with science (astronomy, geology, chemistry) and many common mathematics terms such as integer are Latin. Anyone who has an interest in the law knows Latin terms from habeas corpus, to subpoena, to veto and pro bono. Through songs, common poems, and even jokes, Veni Vidi Didici makes learning Latin fun in our modern world.

This is a cool book. I like anything that can take history and make it fun. This book not only gives you history, you learn pronunciation, jokes and colloquialisms. My knowledge of Latin before reading this book was minimal, although going through this book, we use it daily more than we think. This book is not only great for beginners (you can come out of reading this book with a good basic knowledge), it also works for someone already familiar with the language and would like to brush up on or pick up something (like maybe a joke or two?) to improve one’s Latin.
One of favorite parts is the “Make Your Own Proverbs” section. I can see this being very useful/fun in the future once I'm more comfortable with my Latin. What I found most interesting in reading through the book is how Latin is still very much alive. The “Going Digital” section conveys this best. There are words for the internet, video games and other technology.
Oh, and I caught the Harry Potter reference. I like this writer.

This is a great book for anybody who is interested in learning Latin. The author draws from all stages of Latin history, from Roman times to medieval to early modern to contemporary. The author goes over some basics of grammar and vocabulary, and the focus is on functional Latin - for games, conversation, jokes, poetry, and general interaction. This is great for anybody who wants to use Latin for socializing (which should be everyone studying the language).

I bought this with the Getting Started with Latin (see my other review there). This one is a little out of my area of expertise- that is to say, NO expertise, BUT it’s perfect for me to put together because one is a very slow, methodical one-at-a-time exercise book, and this is a Dive Right In! It also pushes to be more modern, helping you to incorporate latin into your everyday life, while the other book your first word is sailor. In Veni Vidi Didici you’re learning phrases like How are you, Very Well (answering how you are), etc. just like you would in a modern day language like Spanish. It was perfect for me to have both, so I could flip back and forth depending on how I felt that day.

Latin is definitely a challenging language to make fun, because there aren't native speakers or contemporary media in Latin to mix up the conjugations and vocabulary lessons. What this book does so well is to introduce an element of fun back into learning the language. It involves stories, songs, games, and most importantly, a casual and approachable tone that helps students not feel like they're being lectured at. It's a very detailed book that is structured intelligently-- the first chapter is dedicated to pronunciation, which allows students to read aloud the words they encounter. It also consists of a good mix of text and fill in the blanks, such that it feels like a textbook and a workbook in one. I think it's definitely worth purchasing for any Latin student.

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning Latin. It is also a great reference book if you already know Latin. The first four chapters are for basic Latin skills: Vowels, dipthongs, consonants, pronounciation, grammar and learning to speak with friends. There are Latin songs, poems, games, and jokes. The book has easy to read print and explanations are clear. I really like the “recommendations for further explorations” at the end of the book. There are recommendations for listening, reading, speaking, writing, and vocabulary. I wish there were exercises for practicing the learned principles. I also like the size of the book. Perfect for toting around.
