From Holmes to Sherlock: The Story of the Men and Women Who Created an Icon Kindle Edition

“If you love Sherlock Holmes, you’ll love this book…the best account of Baker Street mania ever written.”—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

Winner of the Agatha Award for best nonfiction work

Edgar Award finalist for best critical/biographical work

Anthony Award finalist for best critical/nonfiction work

Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes. But what made this fictional character, dreamed up by a small-town English doctor in the 1880s, into such a lasting success, despite the author’s own attempt to escape his invention?

In
From Holmes to Sherlock, Swedish author and Baker Street Irregular Mattias Boström recreates the full story behind the legend for the first time. From a young Arthur Conan Doyle sitting in a Scottish lecture hall taking notes on his medical professor’s powers of observation to the pair of modern-day fans who brainstormed the idea behind the TV sensation Sherlock, from the publishing world’s first literary agent to the Georgian princess who showed up at the Conan Doyle estate and altered a legacy, the narrative follows the men and women who have created and perpetuated the myth. It includes tales of unexpected fortune, accidental romance, and inheritances gone awry, and tells of the actors, writers, readers, and other players who have transformed Sherlock Holmes from the gentleman amateur of the Victorian era to the odd genius of today. From Holmes to Sherlock is a singular celebration of the most famous detective in the world—a must for newcomers and experts alike.

Praise for From Holmes to Sherlock:

One of the Washington Post’s 50 notable works of nonfiction in 2017, a Crime Lady best book of the year, and one of Ashwin Sanghi’s 5 favorite books of the year (Deccan Herald)

A Publishers Weekly Top 10 in Essays & Literary Criticism for fall 2017

“If you love Sherlock Holmes, you’ll love this book . . . Mattias Bostrom’s From Holmes to Sherlock is the best account of Baker Street mania ever written. Really . . . what Bostrom has accomplished supremely well is to relate, as his subtitle proclaims, ‘the story of the men and women who created an icon.’ In effect, he shows us how Sherlock Holmes enchanted the world.”―Michael Dirda, Washington Post

“A timely overview of the great detective’s actual genesis and multiple transformation as a mass cultural icon . . . Riveting . . . Boström has expertly unearthed entertaining instances of the sleuth’s diverse appearances in all media, throughout the world . . . [A] wonderfully entertaining history.”―Michael Saler, Wall Street Journal

From Holmes to Sherlock celebrates the versatility of one of fiction’s most beloved characters . . . terrific . . . Mattias Boström has written a necessary addition to any Baker Street library.”―Steve Donoghue, Christian Science Monitor

“For Sherlock Holmes buffs, there’s a new book I imagine is indispensable . . . Boström’s achievement is staggering and endearingly gossipy. It’s like eating popcorn and you learn a whole lot of cool stuff along the way.”―Nicholas Meyer

“Mattias Boström has done the impossible―encapsulated the journey of Sherlock Holmes from international literary superstar to modern day television hero. Meticulous, charming and, best of all, adoring of the original.”―Lyndsay Faye, author of The Whole Art of Detection

“Just when you think you’ve read every great book about the history of Doyle and Holmes, Mattias Boström reveals startling new layers to the famous adventures of the greatest detective of all time. Written with skill, wit, and unmatched expertise,
From Holmes to Sherlock is the new standard in the complete history of not only the original Doyle stories, but literally every adaptation, too.”―Ryan Britt, author of Luke Skywalker Can't Read

“A breathtakingly comprehensive study of a literary phenomenon . . . Mattias Boström has given us an epic narrative that despite its length and sheer poundage in paperback is unputdownable. Bravo.”
New York Journal of Books “One of my favorite books of the year . . . you will enjoy Boström's book enormously. It's a delight to read, narrative history paced like a suspense novel . . . What I loved most about From Holmes to Sherlock is that you don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes expert to enjoy it.”―Sarah Weinman, Crime Lady

“Boström, a Swedish master of Sherlockiana, whose writings during some thirty years of research is uncontestedly award-winning, reveals how each generation has a different slant, perhaps more nuanced, on the great detective.”Decatur Daily

“Even the most assiduous Sherlockian can admit that the endless reinvention and lasting pop-cultural impact of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation was not necessarily elementary. As a study in Sherlock, the case of the big business of public frenzies, literary estates and endless adaptations finally gets solved.”Globe & Mail (Toronto), “gifts for every type of book lover on your list”

“A fascinating tale that brings together everything you thought you knew about Sherlock Holmes, and then some . . . both a work of deep scholarship and a disarmingly racy read.”Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)

“Boström provides a unique approach to the history of the Sherlock Holmes phenomenon that had me turning all 500 pages of this tome with interest.”―Steve Steinbock, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, 5 stars

“Conan Doyle’s building of the character has never been better told, and the peregrinations of the copyrights down through the years form virtually a novel in itself.”―Nick Murray, Financial Advisor, “books of the year 2017”

“[Boström] comes up with some intriguing and fresh details . . . The canon of critical and biographical material on Holmes and Doyle is massive, of course, but even so, this latest entry makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how a bloodhound called Sherlock took over the world. ”Booklist (starred review)

“A remarkable tour of Sherlock facts and myths . . . Bostrom's lively narration makes this hefty book feel just as fun as the original detective adventures. It is detailed but never boring, and is probably the only book over 200 pages that I have read in one sitting (do or do not try this at home).”
―Politics and Prose

“Entertaining, enlightening . . . Each chapter is short, written in a punchy, eavesdropping style, so that even if you don’t know the protagonists, their battles, failures and successes read like mini-mysteries . . . The chapters here are like a bag of salted peanuts―you can’t stop at one.”Winnipeg Free Press

“A spirited account of how Sherlock became a household name . . . Boström's weaving of the Holmes story into the larger one of popular culture and the mass-entertainment industry is the best part of this very good book. For fans of literature, film history, and Conan Doyle alike, a fine complement to the best works of Sherlock-iana.”Kirkus Reviews

“Boström’s important and entertaining book should be read by all Holmes fans.”
―Randall Stock, Best of Sherlock, 2017 best books about Holmes & Conan Doyle

“A fascinating treatment of Doyle’s creation of Holmes and the way in which it became such a popular culture juggernaut, sometimes in spite of Doyle’s descendants.”―Max Allan Collins

“Boström has succeeded masterfully in doing something no one has hitherto dared try: telling the whole Sherlock Holmes 'story.' It is an extraordinary tale.”―Nicholas Utechin, editor of the Sherlock Holmes Journal, 1976-2006

“When next asked why you so love Sherlock Holmes, hand your interrogator a copy of this work.”

From Holmes to Sherlock] explores the world’s continuing fascination with fiction’s leading detective hero. The informal, accessible style of Gallagher’s translation makes for an easy, if lengthy, read.”Publishers Weekly

Just finished this massive tome, and like the very best historical books, it has led me down the path of wanting to read so many books the author mentioned, and watch all the TV and film adaptations he talked about, and learn more about many of the people. The characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are obsessively fascinating, and so is the story of the author, Arthur Conan Doyle, and his family, friends, and descendants. You might think this ground has been covered, but not in the sort of fascinating, novelistic form this author has adopted. Clearly, thousands of hours of research were involved, and still Bostrom has created a page turner and an addictive story. I was sad to see it end as it got even better as it went on. Special kudos to the author for making it clear how he felt about certain less savory characters and especially for presenting a factual, clear, and detailed description of the integration of women into the Baker Street Irregulars and a nonjudgmental description of the growth of fan fiction and fans who see the Holmes/Watson relationship in romantic and/or sexual terms. This book is highly recommended for anybody who likes Sherlock Holmes or, really, any 19th/20th century detective literature.

This book is long, comprehensive, and tells us far more about the inner dealings and jealousies of the Conan Doyle family after Arthur's death than most people would care to know.

All that being said, this book is extremely thorough and well researched and tells us all about the creator and family of the cultural icon we all know and love so well.

I enjoyed this book start to finish. Its narrative style is engaging and frequently full of small surprises that will put a smile on your face. In addition to narrating the sage of Conon Doyle and his children in relation to the Holmes stories, it catalogs the many adaptions in film, radio, on stage and in major pastiches, such as Laurie King's wonderful Mary Russell stories. I think it lacks only full coverage of Holmes on the radio, while doing a better job with the films. It covers the story of the BBC's faithful Granada series starring Jeremy Brett quite well. The Baker Street Irregulars and Holmes enthusiasts such as Christopher Morley and Edgar Smith make frequent appearances throughout the book. I think this is the definitive book about the Holmes saga (and I've read many). I was disappointed when this long book ended because I enjoyed it so much.

This is clearly a labor of love. The huge amount of research shows, as we used to say in the research and writing business, "notecard by notecard." I will not fault the translation. The writing is fairly smooth, but overall it was not what I hoped it would be. What I was eager to see were descriptions of how the basic parameters of the stories was changed over time. This part of the story is largely skipped over in my opinion in favor of long (and to me somewhat tedious) tales of the Conan Doyle family and how it tried to protect its financial interests and fought among each other for control. I was not looking for the inside story on the deals they made; I was interested in how the stories were updated or re-imagined over the decades and why those decisions were made. In that sense, it was a disappointment.

This is a well researched, thought provoking book. The author traces the life and writing life of the creator of Sherlock Holmes in very readable prose. As well as providing publishing facts, oath sides of the Atlantic, which are fascinating in their tales of readership. And then of course adaptation to the big screen, and ubiquitous television screens. I’m a huge fan and loved the history of the books, author, travel, movies, scripts, current events. It was easier to digest in short bursts of reading. But every chapter had a tidbit or revelation. Good fun.

When you start reading this book, you might be forgiven for thinking it is an account of how Sherlock Holmes was created. But not only does this go beyond the beginnings of the master detective it goes beyond the life of his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Mr. Bostrom traces the growth of Holmes beyond the original stories and into plays, movies, radio and pastiches. We see how the Conan Doyle estate, initially led by his sons, both encouraged and hindered the development of depictions and new stories about Holmes. We also see the development of Sherlockian fandom and its most influential participants. The saga moves quickly in short chapters that are nevertheless chock full of fascinating details. Things drag abit in the parts that cover Doyle's greedy sons and their ineptness at personal and business finance. After their deaths the tale picks up and takes us right up to the BBC series "Sherlock." This book is a must read for everyone enthusiastic about the great detective. No matter how much you think you know about this phenomenon you will be surprised.

The story behind the author and the detective. A fascinating and apparently complete account covering well over a century of Holmesiana. I thought it got a bit boring in accounting the events after Doyle's offspring all died - in other words, the last 20-30 years.

As a life-long Sherlock Holmes fan (well, at least since Junior High School when I read The Hound of the Baskervilles), I have always been tangentially interested in both the stories and, more recently, what others thought abut the stories. This book gives one of the best overall views of the challenges that Doyle underwent and how they impacted the writing of the stories. It also goes into a great amount of depth into how grew around the world and those who were responsible for that growth. This book will go a long way to enhance your enjoyment of the original adventures.

A very good book about the influence of Sherlock Holmes as a fictional, yes, not real character in modern times. The text charts the cultural phenomenon up to Cumberbatch, hence the title as the BBC series is "Sherlock". It is a clever title indeed. There are references not only to actors, plays, British films, the Vasily Livanov films and pastiches but donations to Conan Doyle's descendants as well as other interesting things.
