The Return (Amish Beginnings Book #3) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 343 ratings

Beautiful and winsome, Betsy Zook never questioned her family's rigid expectations, nor those of devoted Hans, but then she never had to. Not until the night when she's taken captive in a surprise Indian raid. During her captivity, Betsy faces brutality and hardship, but also unexpected kindness. She draws strength from native Caleb, who encourages her to find God in all circumstances. She finds herself torn between her pious upbringing and the intense new feelings this compelling man awakens within her.

Handsome and complex, Hans is greatly anguished by Betsy's captivity and turns to Tessa Bauer for comfort. Eagerly, Tessa responds, overlooking troubling signs of Hans's hunger for revenge. When Betsy is finally restored to the Amish, have things gone too far between Hans and Tessa?

Inspired by true events, this deeply layered novel gives a glimpse into the tumultuous days of prerevolutionary Pennsylvania through the eyes of two young, determined, and faith-filled women.

An Amish Beginings Novel by Suzanne Woods Fisher: The Return
Wow where to begin, this is a wonderful conclusion to the series, a historical look into the Amish life and circumstances after settling into their new surroundings in Pennsylvania. This could be read as a stand alone novel however I really suggest you read the entire series as it will strengthen your understanding of the historical events Suzanne Woods Fisher has so diligently researched and put into these books. Book one being Anna's Crossing, and Book two being The Newcomer.
In this book you will be sweep away by Tessa Bauer and her charming character. She is a young girl on the brink of womanhood and very much in love with the handsome Hans who only has eyes for Betsy Zook who you will see is one of the main characters. Betsy and Hans have plans to marry when tragedy strikes, now Tessa could not be happier and at the same time is discussed with herself for feeling that way. She really wishes no ill will on Betsy but oh how she wants Hans!
After a brutal Indian attack where Betsy and her brother are taken captive and traded and her parents are killed in front of them Hans struggles with this, Hans turns to Tessa and in her eagerness to finally be with her beloved Hans she fails to overlook the signs that Hans has revenge in his eye which is not the Amish way. Can forgiveness happen. Will Tessa see what is happening. What will happen to Betsy and her brother?
As the days turn into months Betsy settles into her life amoung her sister Indian woman, she also meets a young man who is kind to her and speaks her language Caleb who slowly she starts trusting and they become friends. This is a true look into the hardship of the Amish and the Indians life, it's a wonderful read for both men and women and will as history buffs and romantic at heart readers. I can't say enough about I'm impressed with the detail Suzanne put into this book. I have read a lot of Amish Christian Fiction Books and I really like them all however the historical accuracy in this series is amazing. Please do yourself a favor and read this series. If I could give it more than five stars I would. I really hope Suzanne continues Betsy's story.

The Return by Suzanne Woods Fisher
Suzanne has always been one of my favorite Amish writers. She writes her stories with depth and inspiration that truly pulls you into the story. Her Amish history stories of a true story wove into fiction is no exception to this. I truly loved the entire series and am sad to see The Return be the last book in the series.

The Early Settlers had a rough time, I cannot imagine the life and toil they had to make it from day to day. We have it so simple compared to back then. We don’t face the constant dangers that the settlers had to face. Our housing can be built in no time, whereas housing back then was a timeless effort of hard work and strenuous effort. The wagon that was built was a stunning marvel and what I didn’t realize, it was first made by the Amish!

Betsy and Hans have a long road of healing to overcome but through faith and love and tenderness joy comes in the morning. Most notably forgiveness and an honest miracle.

Anyone who loves historical fiction and Amish fiction will love this heartrending tale of faith, love, and hope!

Life on the Pennsylvania frontier is not easy. It is even harder if you are, like Tessa Bauer's family, Amish pacifists surrounded by Indian raids and hot-headed whites who would destroy all Indians.

When Betsy Zook's family is the victim of an Indian raid, Bairn Bauer,Tessa's father, and his brother Felix must lead the community through a tumultuous time, yet seek to safely recover the missing family members.

Jealousy, greed, prejudice and unforgiveness struggle mightily against love, peace, and forebearance. A much darker book than I had expected, but true to its time.

Helpful additions to the book were many. There was an index in the front of various characters and their relationships. At the back, the author sorts the fact from fiction in the book. Also included are discussion questions good for solo use or a book club.

    An eye-opener, for sure!!

I've greatly enjoyed this series on the Amish and the beginnings of the US. This book jumps 25 years in the future and focuses on Anne's daughter Tessa, the man she loves, Hans, the woman he loves, Betsy, who is captured by Native Americans, and Caleb, the half Indian boy that Betsy comes to love. Yes it is quite a complicated love triangle/rectangle, but that's only a small part of the story. The primary focus is on the struggle of this community and the ongoing conflict with the Native Americans and those who wish to fight them. This was a great wrap up to the Amish Beginnings series. I just wish there was more of a fleshed out ending for some of the characters.

This is a wonderful Amish book but it is the last in the series of "Amish Beginnings". We started out reading "Christmas at Rose Hill Farm" which lead us to "Anna's Crossing" the first in the series. "Anna's Crossing" had to do with the Charming Nancy ship which arrived in the United States in 1737. The next book was "The Newcomer" and the last was "The Return". This is a wonderful series of Amish related books anyone would enjoy. Hope you get a chance to read them!!

I have enjoyed the author's writings.
I enjoyed going back in history and getting a glimpse of the hardships that early settlers endured and how God helped them through. The characters were endearing and I enjoyed how Felix and Catrina finally got together
