Instead of helping in the aftermath of loss, many of the books and strategies meant to guide us through grief only add to the sadness. No one understands the need for a new approach more than Michelle Steinke-Baumgard, who lost her husband in a tragic plane accident and became a widow overnight. In the darkest moment of her life, the mother of two young children found solace and hope in the unlikeliest of places: exercise. She recorded her journey in her blog, One Fit Widow, and soon had a huge community of devoted followers. Now, Michelle offers her revolutionary solution to grief to everyone struggling with their own loss.

Healthy Healing addresses the physical, mental, and emotional effects of grief in a way that no other book in the category has ever done, offering a 12-week plan that empowers you to work through loss by using the power of exercise and endorphins, and rediscovering happiness by strengthening body, mind and spirit through fitness. And the benefits don’t end there: Exercise helps with poor sleep—a common side effect of trauma—and proper nutrition boosts immunity and fuels you through a busy, stressful time.Michelle dispels common myths about grief and replaces them with relatable advice and actionable inspiration, including:

• Starting with baby steps such as taking a walk or being in nature
• Learning to be comfortable with alone time and rediscovering your strength
• Pairing your exact circumstances with the right form of exercise, whether it’s gentle yoga to release trapped sadness or intense kickboxing to work through anger
• Embracing community and surrounding yourself with support

This book is an exercise plan, nutrition guide, and, most importantly, a compassionate companion during the most difficult time in your life. With Healthy Healing, you’ll learn how to channel your pain into something productive—and use tragedy as a catalyst for inspired change.

Michelle Steinke-Baumgard is the Co-Founder of My1FitLife, One Fit Widow, and the Live the List Nonprofit. After losing her late husband in 2009, she became engrossed in fitness not only as a lifestyle but also as a profession. After losing 80 pounds, Michelle decided that her love of fitness was more than just a pastime, and she wanted to spend the rest of her life empowering those with a loss to live their life to the fullest. Through personal experience, Michelle learned that exercise and endorphins were the most underutilized form of therapy, especially for those dealing with grief and trauma, and yet perhaps the most useful. With her personal perspective on loss, Michelle decided to leave her VP corporate job and become a certified personal trainer. Michelle started her fitness career as a coach at the gym that gave me weight loss success and eventually left to start My1FitLife. Her dream is to help as many people as possible find stress relief and renewal of life through health and fitness. Today, Michelle's coaching portal, My1FitLife has over 3,000 worldwide members reaching all over the world and The Live the List Nonprofit is helping the widowed live out their dreams so they can make deliberate steps forward with their life. Michelle has been featured in Fitness, Shape, Woman's World Magazine and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post where she writes on both grief and fitness issues.

This book is amazing!! My husband passed away a year ago. A friend recommended joining the fb page of this author and because it appeared to be about fitness and I was very overweight, I refused to join. After several friends encouraged me to join..I finally did. Shortly after, this book was released. Wow!! Game changer for my grieving process!! This is not a grief book that is filled with psychological babble..it's simply good old common sense. After reading just one chapter, I knew this book would help because I could relate to everything Michelle was saying. Since reading the book and joining the fb page, one fit widow, we have completely changed our diet and greatly improved our exercise which in turn has strengthened us to grieve in a healthy way. I have lost 65 pounds and gained a tribe of friends who I now consider family. My daughter's, ages 7&10, and I just got home from a retreat with Michelle and her husband Keith from lake Tahoe. They are both incredible people. So extremely down to earth and genuinely good people. The information in this book..works!! Read it, you won't regret it.

Even after 12 years I have good and bad days both. Michelle is amazing in her writing. Having a husband who also died in a plane crash I think I relate just a little bit more. She has inspired me and I know so many others Not only with this book but in her daily living. She is such an inspiration. Many times (especially on those not so good days) as much as I haven’t wanted to I turned to exercise to help deal with the pain. To raising kids, to loving again and to just plain living Michelle has helped me more than she will probably ever know. I have shared this book with a few already who unfortunately had to join the club of widowhood.
Thank you Michelle. I am one who will be forever grateful to you.

Michelle, the author, has done an amazing job reaching out to the reader to help understand the impacts, both mental and physical, of dealing with loss of a loved one. The author not only connects you with her story and experience in a deep and moving way, but with the emotional and psychological elements that everyone dealing with such loss experiences. However, EVERYONE should get and read this book. The author's most important message, brought out through each chapter - is how we need to 1) cherish those we love - each day, 2) live in the moment and grasp life and 3) be physically and mentally enabled to "live your best life."

Wonderful book. Pick it up and get motivated to stand up, move, and get out there and experience life.

I stumbled upon Michelle's blog shortly after my husband was killed by a drunk driver. I knew I needed to make healthy changes in my life even before he died but figured I could always start "tomorrow". Michelle's personal story resonated with me so much and her positive attitude towards healthy grieving was exactly what I needed to hear. Her book provided a framework for helping to change my mindset and cement my resolve to make healthy changes in my life. You do not need to be a widow/widower to find personal enlightenment in her words. I would highly recommend this book if you are trying to move forward in a way that is positive for mind AND body during difficult times. We only have THIS life and tomorrow is not promised.

First off, the one star review above is from someone who was trolling the author’s Facebook page. She has nothing to do with rearranging the books, that’s something her tribe - yes we are a tribe - has been doing to get the word out so hopefully somebody who really needs it will see the book. Michelle is a positive, uplifting and inspiring person, and her book is meant to help people who are grieving move through the grief with exercise and nutrition. It’s really sad that online trolls would target her over something like this. Maybe they need to get out and move and eat good food. Healthy Healing helps reinforce Michelle’s message that we can help ourselves in a healthy, positive way. It’s a great addition to 1 Fit Life.

Michelle Steinke-Baumgard has been instrumental in helping others, and the World really, in dealing with loss and grief. This book is an extension of her experience, her knowledge on the subject, and her intuition. Many of us who’ve had to live through a loss, have found freedom and strength from her book and in her presence traveling with her on her many national and international retreats. She is the first person to allow a new discussion on the subject of grief and loss and is allowing education to take place to increase knowledge within the World. This book speaks to fitness and loss and how the two are intertwined and symbiotic. A book one cannot put down.
