The Faithful One: A Novel Kindle Edition
Seth Jacobs has it all—health, wealth, a great career, a mansion in greater Boston, a beautiful wife, and three children. But in a series of reversals beyond his control, Seth loses his many fortunes one after the next. His friends, who suggest God has a reason for inflicting so much loss and pain upon him, challenge Seth’s faith.
At the lowest depths of his suffering, Seth asks God—as we all do—“Why is this happening to me?” And he receives an unexpected answer. A modern-day story based on the Bible’s Book of Job, The Faithful One inspires us all to keep our faith in the Lord no matter what.
“Chynoweth constructs—and then deconstructs—Seth’s life with an eye for detail and an inventive sense of how one tragedy can beget the next.” —Kirkus Reviews

About the author

Modern Day Bible Stories - contemporary suspense novels by best-selling author Michele Chynoweth - bring stories in the Bible to life for today's readers with contemporary characters and plots so they can better understand and relate to God's messages of faith and hope. Michele's universally-appealing inspirational novels are filled with drama, intrigue and romance and include "The Faithful One" based on the Book of Job, "The Peace Maker," based on the story of David and Abigail in the First Book of Samuel, "The Runaway Prophet" based on the Book of Jonah, and "The Jealous Son" based on the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis.
Michele believes the Old Testament stories are often difficult to read and comprehend, so she hopes that re-imagining them in contemporary times with edgy fiction that's fast-paced and entertaining will help readers appreciate them, understand God's messages and hopefully bring people back to the Bible itself. In addition to being an author, Michele is also an award-winning speaker, book coach and editor, and a college instructor of writing, publishing and marketing fiction. - Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2014I think Chynoweth did a magnificent job on retelling the story of Job with a modern twist. The author writes Seth Jacobs as a kind, generous, and "good" character. One with whom the reader is quickly enraptured. The reader gets the sense the world has completely turned their back on a man who is a true rags to riches story (despite the fact that several people in powerful positions think the contrary).
Chynoweth chooses not to kill off Seth's children, but instead put them in situations that are perhaps worse than death. Situations, that as a mother, made my heart ache.
I thought the most interesting part of the story was who the author chose to be Seth's "friends" - a lawyer (an agnostic one at that), a doctor, and a rabbi - who all attempt to shed light on why Seth's world crashes down around him.
Seth's own journey into God's role in his life has left such an impact on me that, despite finishing this book over a week ago, I'm still mulling over the questions in my brain.
The ultimate question of, "Why me?" is answered in a most unusual (but Biblically sound) way.
Even more inspiring is how things eventually turn out for Seth and his family. Admittedly, the choices he makes are not necessarily the choices I would make, which make following his journey all the more thought provoking.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2014The story of Seth Jacobs reminded me of a story of a modern day Job. The man looses everything that matters, and then God steps in as Seth humbles himself. The action in the story is quick and exciting. I had trouble stopping my reading to get some sleep. The character descriptions were also very complete as I visualized each of them. I was fascinated by each one's personality, goals and life. This is a story that shows us that a god really is in control of all. It was a warm and uplifting story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2013I know this is a retake on the book of Job but the author does so in a very good way. It begins a bit far-fetched...how does one man have so much and you just know something is going to happen. Then, it does. That is when you realize you are being sucked into the modern day retelling of Job. It is hard to follow that act and at first, I was reluctant but I let myself just read the story as is and I was amazed at what the author present. For one man to go through so much, I had no idea how he could ever get everything back. Just as in the Bible however, the reader is taught to remember that money is not everything and that sometimes, being average means you are the wealthiest person around. Its a hard lesson to remember and one we need to relearn. This book helped me remember the Bible story and I am so glad for that!
Despite some flows issues, it took my breath away. It had me laughing, crying and worrying for everyone (but the wife really!) in this book. That is hard to do. I am so glad I read this book and I will be sure to pass it along. It has such a great lesson and such a great story that it deserves a 5 star rating for sure1
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2013I really enjoyed this modern day story of Job. The authors kept me very interested. When Seth has had it all taken from him he struggles with his faith. I am sure most people including myself would. One thing that I thought might be missing though is that he never seemed to be praising God throughout his trials. I wonder if he had refused to give in to the depression pending from all of his plights if perhaps listening to Christian music, reading good books & the Word most especially perhaps his spirit could've been lifted. Just my take. I was pleasantly surprised that near the end of the book when his estranged wife wants to make another try at their marriage that he actually chooses to give their relationship another chance. I have been disappointed in recent Christian books that it is not even suggested that the two might try to work out their differences instead of getting a divorce. I'll share a quote from the book where it talks about this reunion & it is so beautiful.
"But Seth & Maria had a family together and a past, like a rich tapestry that time dulls a little but never unravels. They had rediscovered that tapestry, brushed off the dirt and lovingly added new stitches until it shone more colorful and beautiful than before." In the story Seth had already started to fall in love with a different woman but wisely he choose to accept his estranged wife's plea to get back together. Thank you author's for sharing in your story that divorce is not always the answer!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2014I really enjoyed this book and believe that Ms. Chynoweth very cleverly modernized the story of Job. I wished that I had reviewed the book of Job before I read this. I did notice a few differences between Job's story and this book, but I don't want to go into details on those because I don't want to spoil the story.
I like how the story begins with the main character realizing how blessed he was.--I wish more books were that positive and more people were that grateful. In the actual book of Job, God pointed out Job's integrity to Satan. I can see where that would be a challenge to incorporate in a more modern version of this story.
I think it is good to read stories like this from time to time. Those of us who were brought up in church hear the same Bible stories frequently and neglect to think about what those people really felt. This helps us to relate better.
If you like this type of story, I would also recommend Francine Rivers' "Redeeming Love". It is like the Biblical account of Hosea in the 1800's. It also is a favorite read of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good read.
This was a "Free Digital Read", so did not expect too much. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. This is a very easy to read book, in my case a one sitting book, all be it a 4 hour sitting. The story of Job told in a modern day context. Kept me turning the pages looking for answers like the main character. Very moving, easy to put yourself in there. Thought provoking, challenging and a really good story. I would happily have paid for this book and will look for others by the same author.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I too got this as a free read and have to say it was one of the best books I have read for years. Simple to read, but gripping. Even though you roughly knew what was going to happen, it still captivated me until the end.
Highly recommmended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected!
A strange but very interesting look at how life can so easily change from wonderful to awful, but how circumstances and people can have a positive and life-changing outcome on life. I know this book shows God's control in all aspects of our lives but I was disappointed to find that God's greatest gift to the human race was never mentioned that gift being His son the Lord Jesus Christ. The story never alluded to the importance of trusting Him as it is only through His perfect sacrifice on the cross that we can be saved from eternal examination and so spend eternity in heaven.
I don't think I could wholeheartedly recommend this book a Christian read but it is an interesting concept.
