The First to Know Kindle Edition
A SECRET HALF BROTHER.
Dana Fields’s father never knew his parents. When Dana secretly does a DNA test for her dad, hoping to find him some distant relatives for his birthday, her entire world implodes. Instead of a few third cousins, Dana discovers a half brother her age whose very existence means her parents’ happy marriage is a lie.
Dana’s desire to know her half brother, Brandon, and the extent of her dad’s deception, clashes with her wish not to destroy her family. When she sees the opportunity to get to know Brandon through his cousin, the intense yet kind Chase, she takes it. But the more she finds out about Brandon, her father’s past and the irresistible guy who’ll never forgive her if he discovers the truth, the more she sees the inevitable fallout from her own lies. With her family crumbling around her, Dana must own up to her actions and find a way to heal the breach—for everyone—before they’re torn apart for good.

About the author
Abigail Johnson was born in Pennsylvania. When she was twelve, her family traded in snowstorms for year-round summers and moved to Arizona. Abigail chronicled the entire cross-country road trip in a purple spiral-bound notebook that she still has, and has been writing ever since. She became a tetraplegic after breaking her neck in a car accident when she was seventeen, but hasn’t let that stop her from bodysurfing in Mexico, writing and directing a high-school production of Cinderella, and riding roller coasters every chance she gets. She is the author of several young adult novels including If I Fix You and Every Other Weekend. I was ready to say that this book was just a mediocre book, because honestly the first half of the book was that for me, but then I read the second half of the book, and omg my heart.
I cry when I read books a lot, I am a super emotional person, but I only cry when someone die or is about to die. There have probably been one or two times when I have teared up over other things in books, but I can't remember any of them so they obviously had not made THAT much of an impact, which is why the fact that this book made me cry over something other than a death (not just tear up, actually cry and have my heart hurting) says so much about it.
Like I said, the beginning of the book was lacking for me, mainly because I wasn't a fan of the beginning of the romance, and none of the family stuff had really started. The second half of the book has a huge focus on family and the repercussions of choices, and I thought it was amazing and that was what stuck with me about this book. Also, even though I wasn't the hugest fan of the romance at the beginning, I was rooting for it to have a happy ending during the second half and to be resolved along with the family problems, so that was a small bonus.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2017Abigail has crafted another heartfelt story in her second YA novel. I was intrigued by her premise of DNA being a link to an individuals unknown past. The heart of the mater is: Do you want to know? And what consequences will develop with this knowledge? I loved the way Abigail structured her story showing how tension is ramped up in all the family dynamics. She showed a knowledgeable understanding of a girls softball team both on and off the field. The ending of this story was very satisfying as Abigail neatly wove together the loose ends of her story. Five years down road I might request a novella to see how sisters story unfolded in the future. I highly recommend this entertaining novel and eagerly anticipate her next published story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2018Abigail Johnson has secured her place on my list of top favorite contemporary authors with this book. It's everything you want in a good story. Heartfelt characters you can sink into and live their life as it unfolds on the page, handsome well-rounded guys that make your heart pound harder, realistic family drama that propels the story forward. I loved this book so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2018THE FIRST TO KNOW is about family and secrets and betrayal and mostly about love. A story that breaks your heart and then heals it. Beautifully told with an ending that gives you all the feels.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2018The First to Know was a good book, but certain aspects of the plot took it too far outside of the realm of possibility. I seriously doubt that an underage person would be able to order a DNA test, either for themselves or another person. The likelihood that a person for whom you seek would have registered with the same genetics company puts the main part of the plot in the unrealistic category. Finally, considering how respectful Dana Fields was in her life before the choice to give her father an unexpected gift, it does not seem likely that she would jump to conclusions and not simply ask for an explanation. The First to Know was a good, quick read, so those who like YA romance and realistic fiction may like the characters and main story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2018Characters are so well developed and the story is well told.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2017Very good story about a hard time for a budding athlete competing with the shadow of her older sister, a dad that's her coach, and a DNA test to bust an entire family apart.
Dana was completely relate able and genuine.
She orders a DNA test for her dad that was in the foster system and didn't know his biological family.
She hopes to find some cousins but instead she discovers another closer relative.
In the process she falls for an amazing guy who happens to know the new relative closely.
Ultimately, many people are affected and many emotions are exposed.
Great book and loved the writing. Looking forward to more from this author.
