Leap of Hope: Chance at an Austen Kind of Life (Crossroads Collection) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

At the Crossroads Center, they’re in the business of handing out second chances. And their newest client is Hope O’Neil – college student and Jane Austen devotee, who has always believed she’d be more at home in the past, wearing corsets and courted by men in cravats. But can a modern girl really fit into a world with no electricity, cell phones, or indoor plumbing? Hope is about to find out when her wish for an Austen kind of life is unexpectedly granted. Although she envisions her second chance will be like something straight out of Pride and Prejudice – complete with her own Mr. Darcy and a romantic happy ending – she gets more than she bargained for in this delightful romp through Regency England… a lot more.

Leap of Hope is part of in an innovative new collection by author Shannon Winslow, stories all about turning points, possibilities, and second chances. Each book is complete in itself and may be read in any order.

Who hasn’t wondered at least once how life would have changed by making an alternate choice at some crucial moment in the past? Where would you be today if you’d turned right instead of left at an important crossroads or been able to sidestep a particular misfortune? Perhaps you’ve daydreamed about a different life altogether, in a different place and time. Each book in the Crossroads Collection features a new hero/heroine who’s given the extraordinary gift of a second chance at life, the chance to answer for themselves the intriguing question “what if?”

Austenesque Reviews gave it a full 5 stars: “Shannon Winslow came up with an inventive and diverting premise and her execution was masterly… Well-written, original, and beautifully composed, Leap of Hope is an entertaining and delightful adventure. Fresh and fun…”

Shannon Winslow says she was minding her own business - raising two sons and pursuing a very sensible career - when she was seduced by the writing bug a dozen years ago. Stirred by the novels of Jane Austen, she set out to produce more stories in the same vein, beginning with a sequel to her favorite, "Pride and Prejudice." "The Darcys of Pemberley" (published in August 2011) quickly became a best-seller, praised for being true to the original's characters and style. Several more Austen-inspired novels have followed. "Winslow is one of the few authors who can channel Austen's style of prose so well that I could not tell the two apart if I tried," reports one reviewer. A life-long resident of the Pacific Northwest, Ms. Winslow resides with her husband in the log home they built in the countryside south of Seattle, where she writes and paints in her studio facing Mt. Rainier.

Although technically not an Austen variation, Leap of Hope masterfully and seamlessly integrates all of Austen's major novels into a second-chance time-traveling story. When Hope, a present-day Austen fan, dies in a freak accident, she is presented with a second chance at living, and she deliberately chooses a Pride and Prejudice-esque family/scenario in which to be inserted, replacing Kate, who also dies in a freak accident, but of course actually regains consciousness with Hope now Kate. At least 95% of the novel follows her life in Regency England, where she remembers both her past life and Kate's history. Hope's past fades, but she continues to draw parallels between Austen's novels and her own new situations and new acquaintances, and eventually achieves the P&P HEA. A most satisfying and enjoyable novel!

In this second time travel novel of the series, we have Hope, lover of Jane Austen and the Regency period, given a second chance at life. Giving up her life in the modern world, she takes the place of Miss Barrett. She wants her own Elizabeth Bennet experience, but she may get a bit more than she bargained for.

This story is especially fun, as our heroine experiences situations mirroring those of many different Austen characters from more than just Pride and Prejudice. Highly recommended.

This story has many quirky, original twists, blended with moments from Pride and Prejudice Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, and other Jane Austen stories. The method of time travel is new and different as well, with some delightful discussion of the Charlie's choices. Highly entertaining!

Once immersed in a story, a reader can almost 'live' there as the scenes and impressions fill our minds and carry us away into that time of life. But what if we suddenly awaken into a chance to actually 'live' there. That is what Shannon Winslow offers us in this book: leave your present life and choose where you would like to take up a new life. That life may be back where you were (and correct some mis-steps) or step into an entirely new life...in any era.
Thus Hope is presented with her chance to change what 'was'... or pick up a new life in a new body and time and experience. Since her favorite author, Jane Austen wrote with such imagination about her own era, Hope (after much research and soul-searching) decides to replace Kate ...who has just been thrown from a horse and died.
Can she seamlessly make the transition? Will she find the joy of going back in time ...or will the life of so long ago prove impossible to adopt and find happiness? We join Hope/Kate and 'live' with her as she finds smooth sailing isn't guaranteed in any life - at any time. But a plucky woman who can adapt to changes, survive and find her balance in any life can 'finesse' her way through the hard times and find her own happiness, even in the world of an Austen heroine.

A chilling beginning through death leads to a life exchange Crossing into a previous century. Enticing Hope into a successful exchange as Kate, her dreams will soon become reality. Readers are driven to urge her to not settle. The book ends with nary a loose end dangling; decidedly much more than simply satisfying. ---SENG

Very enjoyable, easy read, escapist fantasy. Jane Austen with a twist. Has delightful similarities to the mini-series 'Lost in Austen' and the Julie Christie film 'Heaven Can Wait'. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars A second chance...

This is book two of the Crossroads Collection and can be read as a stand alone novel.

As the book description states, Hope O'Neil has been given a second chance at life. As you are given three choices to choose from, she decided to take a whole new life. She chose the Regency time period but that comes as no surprise. She loves all things Jane Austen.

"Jane Austen had set the barb in my mouth herself, and she let Mr. Darcy reel me in like a big ol' catfish. I was a goner, stuffed and roasted and fit to be served up on a platter." (quote from the book)

The book is broken into two parts. Her time at Crossroads deciding and researching all that she needs to learn and how best to cope (no modern conveniences). She also has to come to terms with what she has lost and will lose. However, not all is revealed to Hope once she makes her decision. Part two deals with her life as Kathleen Barrett (Kate). One of four sisters to a landed gentleman and his wife.

Kate (Hope) uses her knowledge of Jane Austen's books to help her through this initial transition. She models herself as 'Elizabeth Bennet' with touches of other characters from Jane's novels as her new life unfolds before her. Will she find her 'Mr. Darcy' in this new life.

I enjoyed Hope/Kate's journey. I will say that 'Leap of Faith', the first book in the series, touched a deeper chord within me than this one. I think Hope/Kate tried too hard at being 'Elizabeth Bennet' than Kate Barrett. I know, strange on my part, as I am a lover of all things Jane Austen myself. Nonetheless, I highly recommend the series and look forward to others that Ms. Winslow may write.
