A traveler’s guide to the abandoned boom town of the American Old West, filled with photographs, maps, history, and detailed directions.

Ghost Towns of the West blazes a trail through the dusty crossroads and mossy cemeteries of the American West, including one-time boomtowns in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The book reveals the little-known stories of long-dead soldiers, indigenous peoples, settlers, farmers, and miners.

Perfect for planning a road trip, each section covers a geographic area and town entries are arranged by location to make this the most user-friendly book on ghost towns west of the Mississippi. Most ghost towns are within a short drive of major cities out West, and they make excellent day trip excursions. If you happen to be in or near Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, or El Paso, for example, you ought to veer towards the nearest ghost town. Western ghost towns can also easily be visited during jaunts to national parks, including Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Crater Lake, Mount Rainier, Glacier, Yellowstone, and many others throughout the West.

Ghost Towns of the West is a comprehensive guide to former boomtowns of the American West, covering ghost towns in eleven states from Washington to New Mexico, and from California to Montana. Whether you’re envisioning a marathon ghost towns tour or simply want to visit a vestige of the past near your home, this book has everything you need to learn about, visit, and explore a modern remnant of how life used to be on the western range.

This is a beautiful book with exhaustive coverage. What qualifies as a "ghost town" in this particular case isn't necessarily a town that is completely abandoned, but a town that has a small fraction of the population it once had at its peak. So in a strange way, Nevada City, CA counts as a ghost town, but Virginia City, NV does not. Each town includes a lovely essay which is really a walking tour of its landmarks and references to historic events. If there are businesses, such as lodgings, food, or shops, those are described too. All this is bound in beautiful heavy-stock full color paper. This is a lovely book for the practical traveler and the armchair tourist alike. This book is sure to satisfy your Wild West fantasies, but is also an accurate historical representation of the mining period it covers.

Seems to be well written. He's also done the work to get info right. Easy to read & interesting. Will be headed west in a month or so, & plan on using it to find quite a few of the places. He gives directions at the end of each town description. Will update this in a few months.

This is a nice book that is mostly about restored ghost towns that anyone can visit with a tourist mindset. I was hoping for a guide to true abandoned and ghostly relics from the days gone by of the American west, places that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to find. I know about a half-dozen such places in my home state that aren’t even mentioned in this book.

So, in summary, this is a nice book for folks looking to drive the minivan to a fixed-up ghost town and maybe even get to chat with one of the people who maintain the place. If you’re looking for rare and little-known haunts that require some effort to find, this is not the book for you.
