Steam (Collected Stories Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

"What do you say to a quickie?"

Diverse, emotionally charged, and deliciously bite-sized...

Fans of Kay Simone will love Steam, a 60k collection of six standalone gay love stories with searingly sexy payoffs and happy endings. Two stories, "A Rational Man" and "An Honest Mistake," are brand new and won't be available anywhere but in the pages of Steam.

With a vast array of themes, from endearing
enemies-to-lovers to scorching hot daddy kink, Steam has something to offer every reader!

*Bet Your Ass: When Rich dares Jonah to chug a bottle of hot sauce in a grocery store parking lot, Jonah knows there's only one thing that will make it worth it: the chance to tie up and top his older boyfriend. (May-December established relationship with edging and restraints. Includes light BDSM themes.)

*Red Handed: Habitual shoplifter Trent is no stranger to law enforcement, but he's never seen a rent-a-cop quite like Chester. When Chester begrudgingly busts the smug kid trying to walk through the front doors of the store with an ambitious score, Trent proposes an alternative to turning him in. Once Chester has the young shoplifter bent over his desk, he decides it's time to give Trent a punishment he'll remember--and one they'll both enjoy. (Includes light BDSM and some verbal humiliation.)

*The Duet: Barrett is unlucky in love, but at least he has his beautiful condo. It comes with great views, an ideal location, and a neighbor upstairs who plays the piano so beautifully that Barrett finds himself falling for the guy, sight unseen. When Barrett finally discovers the identity of his piano-playing crush, he's horrified to find that it's Josh: the rude neighbor that stole his mail and insulted him. Josh may not be the man Barrett pictured, but when they finally meet on new terms, he's certain he can make it up to Barrett with a little two-handed fortissimo action. (A sweet, funny enemies-to-lovers story.)

*Bets Are Off: Maybe it's a lapse in logic or maybe it's desperation that leads Logan to this spot. Wyatt has assured him that Eric's escorts are the best, but even then--a call boy? Really?
When the rude kid that shows up on Logan's doorstep is nothing like what he asked for, he's ready to pay the escort and say goodbye before he regrets the entire situation. But there's something about Henry that Logan can't quite turn away. In the end, Henry is ready to give Logan exactly what he's looking for--but he's going to make Logan wait until he's begging for it.
(A hot May-December story with edging. Includes positive portrayals of sex work.)

*A Rational Man: Having multiple boyfriends sounded like a great idea in the beginning--and the reality of it for Owen was even better. But a year in, Owen suddenly finds himself left behind. Feeling like a third wheel, Owen lapses into bad habits that he thought he'd conquered years ago. When he begins to withdraw and restrict his eating, one of his boyfriends decides to prove to Owen that he loves him--and his body--by making Owen the center of attention. (Includes polyamory, body worship, and frank discussions of eating disorders.)

*An Honest Mistake: A re-imagining of the relationship between Will and Daniel from The Aftermath. After Will accidentally sexts the stranger who is set to deliver his groceries, he's mortified to find out that the man is one of his college students, Daniel. When Daniel arrives with Will's order--and the very incriminating personal text message--he shocks his professor by saying that he wants to know more. (An emotional and funny exploration of daddy kink.)

This collection contains no cliffhangers, no cheating, and plenty of hot scenes, all with happy-for-now endings. Stories range from a 5,000-word quickie to a more established 16,000 word story, but each one includes interesting characters in unexpected situations.

Kay has a thing for oldies, leather jackets, secret poetry, tattoos, whiskey, and every other bad boy cliché in the book.

Kay is non-binary and loves stories that make them laugh, think, and cry in equal measure — but only if there is a happy ending waiting on the last page.

In their past life, Kay was an editor, a librarian, and a cupcake baker. They live on an island in Florida, and wouldn't change a thing about any of that. For free books and updates, sign up for the newsletter at www.kaysimone.com

This was my first time reading anything by Kay Simone. Somebody recommended that I read "Steam". What a recommendation! I am definitely going to check out Ms. Simone's other work. "Steam" is a handful of Ms. Simone's short stories. To my understanding, some of the short stories relate to some of her other work - which means that I will get to see more of them. Others were new.

All I know is that as I read each short story and finished it - my reaction was "That was amazing!" Then I started and finished the next; and each one was just as good if not better than the last! Who knew that you could suffer a book hangover from a short story? I must now locate the rest of Ms. Simone's work so that I can reacquaint myself with the characters and their stories.

On a final note, I will end with this. Before I had even finished all of the stories I openly stated that this book went beyond "Steam" - it was Thermonuclear! All I was missing was a cigarette to smoke afterwards (if I was a smoker). Just seemed fitting.

I liked the variety of the plots and characters.

I really enjoyed all of these short stories! I especially enjoyed 'An Honest Mistake', a short reimagining of the characters Will and Daniel from 'The Aftermath'. And, honestly, I really hope that we get more of the characters from 'Bets are Off', I really loved the dynamic between Logan and Henry.

These were rather steamy, short stories but I was kind of dissatisfied. Mostly they felt incomplete, more like the beginnings of a book or one scene from a book. A couple of them ended rather abruptly. There wasn't always much in the way of character building and not much development. Entertaining but simply focused on the sex for the most part. Still, they're written well for what they are.

Loved these short stories. It was fun seeing old favorite characters in different settings, plus some new favorites.
Ms Simone has done it again!!

Fun little collection of short-stories. Lots of variety- a little bit of something for everything. Definitely going to check out more of Daniel and Will in their actual book The Aftermath.
I wish/hope some of the others will be expended on, turned into novels or at least novellas- a few have quite a bit of potential!
I really enjoyed Bets Are Off, that's one I liked to see more of the characters.
Owen, in a Rational Man, kind of stole my heart!
Barrett ad Josh in The Duet- so sweet!
I really liked that each of these stories was so different.

    Borrowed through KU.

    A delightful collection!

I love books like this. Every short story is wonderfully written, as you'd expect from a quality author like Kay Simone. Every story is like a hearty appetizer: delectable, a change of pace from the usual fare, and completely satisfying.

Not gonna lie, these stories are 'towering inferno' level hot. But they are also so darn funny. Reese, in A Rational Man, might be my new favorite person ever. :) Sweet and loving and hysterical. Rich and Jonah, from Bet Your Axx, are so sexy, yet caring too.

An Honest Mistake....well, I wasn't sure I'd like this one. "Re-imagining" how Will and Daniel met? No thanks, I already know how they met and fell in love. I know those two very well from one of my favorite books, Aftermath. (Yes, I know these are characters in a book and didn't really meet...hush.) HOWEVER, this story is wonderful rendered. I enjoyed it all. Daniel was his usual transparent, vulnerable self which I love. It was a fun, incredibly sexy romp.

You can enjoy this book all in one sitting or savor each story in coffee-break sized chunks. No matter which way you read it, you will enjoy it!
