- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017One damned good read. Spoiler alert.
This one starts with brothers James and Connor Andderson.
A couple of days earlier there had been several brutal murders in Hill City, Texas. then yesterday, Hill City had gone dark. Shortly after state troopers had been sent in and nothing had been heard from them since. When the same thing started happening to other towns in eastern Texas that night, the National Guard had been sent in. Now there were rumors and videos circulating the internet.
The dead were coming back to life.
James and Connor both read the stories in the papers and Connor called his parents to let them know that he and James would be gone for the weekend. James is the oldest at twenty one while Connor is nineteen. Conner had been a marine though he never saw combat. The brothers are very capable with any gun and both know how to survive. This weekend they will be heading to their Montana camp which is in the middle of the Montana ranch to shoot prairie dogs and coyotes. His Dad told him it would probably all blow over and to go enjoy the hunting at the Montana hunting camp so James and Conner did just that. They killed over two hundred prairie dogs and three coyotes.
On Monday they headed back toward the nearest town and its grocery store. James thought it was weird that they didn't pass a single car. As they hit the main street they found the street littered with crashed cars. There were also dead bodies all over the street.
Connor and James checked the first body they saw. Everything smelled like rotting meat. Connor's marine training kicked in big time. He was now treating the area like a war zone. Though he never saw combat his instincts were on high alert. He knew something wasn't right but just what that something was he didn't know.
This is when they saw their first zombie. A woman who was so badly injured there was no way she should be walking or even alive. But walking she was right toward them. Connor shot her in the uninjured leg but once down she kept dragging herself toward he and James. Connor then shot her in the heart. She still kept coming. Connor shot her in the head and she truly died. Connor told James a head shot is the only way to kill these things and he made sure James understood that he had Connor's back and would take those head shots. Now they were both headed to get their parents, family and a few close friends head for Alaska on a plane that Connor flew. The remote location their lodge was in should keep them all safe from the Zombies.
Emmet Wolf was a home when the news broke about what was going on in Texas. Wolf knew his former father in law was the cause. Its something he learned a year ago when he quit his job. The job being head of security for Lifework the company the man owned. He never thought this day would come but now it was here.
Emmet was forty years old and in great shape. His F-450 was black and had many revisions. It was a Super Duty and had been up armored, had bullet proof glass and was in every way a vehicle he could depend on. It was a vehicle he hoped would help them survive. Wolf headed out to get his ex wife and daughter.
What he found when he arrived was dead zombies and George, Jane's husband with a shotgun. They obviously have had their first taste of the zombie apocalypse.
George was coughing and hacking and didn't look well at all. Emmet saw a bite mark on his arm and knew George would become one of the walking dead. Jane wouldn't let Emmet shoot George so Emmet loaded them all up in his truck and headed out knowing full well that he would be killing George as soon as he turned. He kept his eye on George the whole time.
Emmet's twenty year old daughter Alexis was more than happy to see her dad. A Dad who had taught her all about guns and how to use them. He taught her how to defend herself.
Emmett took all of them with him as he headed North. Emmet had been a marine in his younger years and when he left the Corp he went into private security which is how he got the job at Lifework. It was also how he learned what was going to happen. It was something he hoped never would happen but he had prepared his vehicle just in case it did.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has James, Connor, Emmett, Alexis, Jane, a Jane who doesn't believe a word Emmet says, George, a George Emmet will kill, a James and Connor who head for their parents ranch in Texas, a Dad they will fine in the barn surrounded by the dead he killed, the dead aren't zombies but living men, men who are marked with a red X both front and back, an X that's made with human blood, a Dad who tells them their mother has been taken, a Dad who dies, a James and Connor who head out to find Mom, an Emmet and daughter who come to the town of Haven, a Haven that isn't a Haven at all, a psycho of a priest, drugged dinner, an Enmet who wakes up in a basement, a daughter who will be sacrificed to the zombies, a James and Connor who arrive after finding their Mother dead, a James and Connor who killed every one of the red X men they could find, a James and Connor who kill the priest and anyone with a gun, an Alexis who frees her Father, a meeting between Emmet, James and Connor all of who decide to go their separate ways and Emmet, Alexis, James and Connor doing their best to save who they can, say alive and survive.
Five Stars and then some
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2019When brothers James and Connor Andderson return from a hunting trip, the world they come home to isn’t the one they left just days earlier. But being resourceful and well-prepared young men, though they are taken by surprise, they are far from helpless in the chaos initiated by a zombie apocalypse.
This is a fast-paced and entertaining read. Though it is littered with blood, zombies, and bodies—as to be expected in Zombie Apocalypse literature—the swearing is minimal and sex nonexistent, which I appreciated.
The brothers are cool under pressure, loyal and admirable. I admired their ability to confront difficult situations head on without wimping out, and the amount of angst isn’t overwhelming but appropriate for the characters and the situations.
Though I doubt I’ll ever be a big zombie fan (I’m more of a fantasy reader normally), I recommend Outbreak to any who enjoy the genre and to those who would like to check it out without a lot of inappropriate swearing and sex. Well done Joshua C. Chadd.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2019The story is a rollercoaster of action with enough slow-downs to get your bearings before launching into the next high-adrenaline scene of blasting bad guys and saving others. For a new writer, Joshua C. Chad makes an explosive debut. There are a few grammatical errors common to new writers but his creativity more than makes up for it with this page-turner. Much of the story centers on family bonds tied in with Christian faith but this is not a story for only Christian readers; it is not pushy on religion and can be enjoyed by all faiths as well as atheists and agnostics too. The characters are well-developed. The young and strong with deep pockets and lots of guns are the heroes who save those who are less fortunate. This gives the story the verisimilitude to tackle obstacles in a post-apocalyptic dystopia. Let’s face it, those without money and assets are eaten first in the real world and this would and should be exaggerated in fiction as it is in Outbreak. I recommend this book to anyone who has a sense of righteousness to protect their loved ones.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2017Before I get into all the flowery bouquets, let me just say that I'm not all that big into the Zombie craze. To me, I pretty much stop at Zombie Apocalypse jokes--but I LOVED this book. The author took a typical zombie apocalypse story and put a unique twist and personal spin on it. The style of the book is fast paced, and action packed with bits of humor seeded throughout--as well as some thought provoking dialogue between the characters. If you like stories where the good guys are put in impossible situations, check this one out. Oh, and don't let the fact that this was a debut novel. It doesn't read like an authors first book, it is a well crafted story with a solid structure and a smooth and fun read. I can't wait to read about the rest of the 'brothers' adventure.

3.0 out of 5 stars Redneck's wet dream
An ode on firearms. Computer game level of combat. But honestly rather entertaining. I don't know if willingly or not but it was at times very funny. And don't forget the "Buddy Jesus" level of religiosity. Including miracles and prophetic dreams. As I said in title: Redneck's wet dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a series
I enjoyed this book and liked finding about the characters. Are they going to survive, or are they going to get eaten? You’ll have to read the book to find out. Yes the books a little nerdy and yes it’s a little bit immature - but just a very little and I enjoyed it all them same! It’s worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christian Zombie Thriller
This is not normally the sort of book I would read but I decided to give it a go and found it to be a quick and easy read. Once I had started reading the story, it was easy to keep going until I finished the book.
The characters are interesting and have a passion for guns, shooting prairie dogs, and their faith. But in this case, they end up shooting a lot more than just prairie dogs.
Zombie apocalypse thrillers certainly seem to be popular but this one seems to have a unique twist, making it stand out from the crowd, so well done to Joshua Chadd. The author is a Christian and blends his Christian beliefs into the story of families trying to survive a zombie apocalyptic world. He also touches on the complicated issues families would have to deal with destroying these creatures. I would recommend this book to those who like reading fast-paced Christian fiction - specifically zombie thrillers.
