Siege of Shadows (The Effigies Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 69 ratings

The Effigies seek out the true origins of the Phantoms that terrorize their world in this thrilling follow-up to Fate of Flames, which Elise Chapman calls “an immersive and monstrously fun read.”

There’s nowhere to hide.

Not when you’re an Effigy. No matter where they go, Maia and the other Effigies can’t escape the eyes of the press—especially not after failing to capture Saul, whose power to control the monstrous Phantoms has left the world in a state of panic. It’s been two months since Saul’s disappearance, and there’s still no sign of him, leaving the public to wonder whether the Sect—and the Effigies—are capable of protecting anyone.

When Saul suddenly surfaces in the middle of the Sahara desert, the Sect sends Maia and her friends out after him. But instead of Saul, they discover a dying soldier engineered with Effigy-like abilities. Even worse, there may be more soldiers like him out there, and it looks like the Effigies are their prime targets.

Yet the looming danger of Saul and this mysterious new army doesn’t overshadow Maia’s fear of the Sect, who ordered the death of the previous Fire Effigy, Natalya. With enemies on all sides and the world turning against them, the Effigies have to put their trust in each other—easier said than done when secrets threaten to tear them apart.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Two months after Saul has disappeared, the Effigies can't seem to get along, never mind focus on finding the boy who is an accursed immortal with the power to vanish. Much like Fate of Flames, this story begins with a phantom attack and chaos that throws the four girls into emotional turmoil as they struggle to work together in spite of their disparate personalities, fears, and priorities. Maia wavers between her desire to find out the truth behind Natalya's death and her conflicting feelings for Rhys, who has not only charmed Maia but is apparently revealed as Natalya's killer through the memories Natalya shares with her. Though she has difficulty understanding and controlling the ability herself, Maia's unique skill of crossing into another Effigy's consciousness makes her particularly interesting to the Sect—but she doesn't know how much she can trust them. Ultimately, Maia's fears consolidate into one larger than any of the others: that Natalya will possess her for good. This is a complicated and dramatic adventure that bounces between violent fantasy battles and squabbles between teen girls forced into their superhero bond, from Maia's concern for the death of innocent bystanders to her insecurities over a teen magazine photo shoot. VERDICT A good fit for fans of Bethany Frenette's "Dark Star" trilogy and older readers of Shannon Hale's "Dangerous." Purchase where the previous volume is popular.—Kerry Sutherland, Akron-Summit County Public Library, OH

I was so excited to receive this book because I'm really looking forward to reading this series. The package arrived today and I opened it expectantly, I ordered three books, and they were surrounded in bubble wrap inside of a box, so I knew they should be safe and undamaged, the first two books looked perfect, unfortunately, this one was not. I ordered this brand new. I paid for it to be brand new. And instead, it arrived the the sleeve jacket ripped. It's like someone took a sharp edge and scraped it up. I'm so frustrated and disappointed. I paid for a new hardcover so that it would look great and last, and now the jacket is ruined.

So reading the second book in the Effigies Series, I wanna say (and I mean literally this ACTUALLY happened). I made me something to eat, wanted to "finish watching that show (this book) i was watching" few seconds after, forgot that it was a book. 😑 I kid you not. At this point, I'm immersed into the world, lore, and characters *spoiler alert* i can sense that 'trust' may take place in the next book. I'm not sure how I feel about the end reveal scene at the last chapter BUT this book has transfixed me and literally confused my brain thinking it was a TV show--i don't even care how it turns out. I love the heck out of the two books 😍

I pre-ordered this book with high expectations after reading the first one. This book is filled with all sorts of twists and turns within the story line that make it hard to put down! If you like fantasy book with a badass female lead character then this is definitely the book for you!

There's a lot about this series I really like. I enjoy the “magical warrior girls are known celebrities” aspect a lot. I also really enjoy Maia’s journey from fangirl (which I identify with hardcore) to the other side of things. I enjoy the racial diversity and I’m always down for the corrupt organization trope. This second installment was more intense and fast paced than the first and really set the stage for a very exciting climax. There was a surprise I didn’t quite see coming which is hard to pull off, and the romance doesn’t feel forced. If I have a complaint it would be that some of the themes are a bit juvenile and the plot a bit to simple but I recognize that I am much older than the characters and the target audience so that kind of thing is bound to miss the mark with me. Overall I really enjoy this series. It’s funny and exciting and it has a lot of heart. I can’t wait for the last book!

There are no words for how good Siege of Shadows was, no second book blues here, the story was fabulous and I need the third book like I need air.

So much stuff has happened in the book, I don't even know if I can remember all that has happened. In general, Saul is on the loose and wreaking havoc once again, the Sect is up to something shady (as if the whole world didn't see that coming) and it looks like the tide is turning against our four heroes, the effigies aren't looking so good in the public eye. The question is can the effigies figure out what is going on with the Sect, stop Saul and come out of it unscathed? Things don't look so good.

The plot was complex, interesting and most of all entertaining. I loved every minute of it, even when I was completely stressed out. I didn't know who to trust, what the consequences to certain actions were going to be and I didn't know if the character I came to care about was going to make it. So yes I stressed but I loved it. So much happened, the plots that were uncovered, the secrets that were revealed and a few plot twists that killed me... OMG! I can't even begin to figure out how Sarah manage to pull this storyline off, she brought up things that were in the first book, things went full circle and while I should have seen some things coming, it still manages to be a total surprise and I loved it.

Maia is a good character because she is as close to a real girl in a Syfy fantasy as a character can get. She isn't just the chosen one, she is one among four in a long line of heroes. Maia was just your average girl and now she has to train to become a hero and it does not come easy to her, she has to work for it. Maia is just a sixteen and trying her best to figure everything out in her new and dangerous world and that is why she will be one of the characters I remember.

The effigies' group dynamic is better than it was in the first book, I mean the girls are closer and they trust one another but it's still pretty new to them. Overall I like them together although every since that scene in Fate of Flames I have been looking at Belle out the side of my eye. I know Belle has been through a lot and was an effigy at a young age but the girl is just to damn intense, she needs to let go. Lake and Chae Rin are polar opposites but they are getting better, Lake is a little more willing to get out there and fight and Chae Rin is starting to go a little easier on the girls. So the dynamic between the group has become a lot more interesting.

I loved Siege of Shadows, so much has been revealed but so much is still a secret and undiscovered. I have so many questions that I desperately need the answered to and with the ending that, I am left hollowed out and I need to know what is going to happen. I don't really read Syfy but I loved this series and I need the last book in the series, Legacy of Light, like right now because I cannot take another second of not knowing what is going to happen.
