R.S. Grey’s newest release, The Foxe and the Hound, showcases Grey’s ability to infuse her romantic comedies with just the right amount of angst, steam, and quirkiness – a perfect combination that has readers swooning, laughing out loud, and highlighting one liners as Madeline and Adam’s story develops.
The life of Madeline Thatcher is quite the hot mess; every facet of it is filled with embarrassing incidences – ones where she makes a complete fool out of herself and then has to deal with the fallout, which simply creates one heck of a vicious cycle of chaos and leaves her feeling even more defeated and overwhelmed.
R.S. Grey created such a fantastic character in Madeline – one who is definitely flawed but one who also is an eclectic mixture of intelligence, confidence, cynicism, and wit. She’s a very relatable heroine and although, at times, she does seem to have multiple personalities, she still is an exceptional woman, which Adam Foxe is definitely aware of, even if his first impression of her is less than stellar.
In the words of Madeline herself, Adam is one “homo sapien perfectus”! And, even though I wanted to shake him at times because of his hot/cold demeanor with Madeline and the mixed signals he seems to send, his reasons for not giving into his feelings for her make sense and the process he goes through to determine the steps he should take with her are illustrated through his own perspective, so readers witness when he reaches his breaking point and attempts to take what he wants when he wants it.
The relationship that develops between Madeline and Adam is definitely not fluid, but based on the circumstances that surround them and their initial reactions to one another, it’s impossible for it to go smoothly. R.S. Grey does a great job of illustrating the ups and downs that both characters endure as they try to work out what the chemistry between them means and what they’re willing to go through in order for any kind of a connection to work.
I have to tell you that Madeline’s dog, Mouse, definitely stole the show throughout the story…as rambunctious and out of control as he is, he’s still so easy to love and it makes the interactions between him, Madeline, and Adam quite comical.
As a reader, it’s so easy to escape into the setting that Grey creates because I can relate to the small town nuances that are described in Hamilton, Texas. Its mentality is one that will resonate with many readers, especially those who grew up in such a place and have their own stories about everyone knowing everyone’s business and the hysteria that’s created when a new “eligible” bachelor moves into town.
I can’t get enough of R.S. Grey’s writing as well as her carefully crafted characters and story lines. She truly has a gift when it comes to the romantic comedy trope, and the fact that each story is unique and doesn’t follow a cookie cutter standard makes the stories she tells that much more powerful and entertaining.

Laughter truly is the best medicine and in R.S. Grey’s latest release, The Foxe and The Hound, there are no shortages of those at all. This had to have been one of the funniest books I’ve ever read with its clever and witty dialogue to date. I was cackling like a fool garnering bizarre looks from strangers and I didn’t care one bit. The Foxe and The Hound is a delightfully, laugh out loud romantic comedy that is totally book shelf worthy. I’ve read and loved so many of this author’s work but with this one, she has done something so absolutely amazing with in my opinion. The characters are utterly lovable. I found Madeleine to be outright charming – quirks and all. She appealed so greatly to me because she was someone who many of us could relate to. From her frustrations with her job to her dream of finding the right person to settle down with. It was her journey to finally falling into step with her career and to finding the right person for her that kept me entertained in the best way possible. Adam was just the right fit for Madeleine. Someone who had a solid and respectful career but also someone who’d been burned romantically in the past. One who had promised to shy away from any romantic notions, afraid to get hurt again. With Madeleine needing some foundation to take root, Adam was just the right person to provide that for her while Adam needed someone who believed in a happily ever after and one who was able to bring some lightness to his world. The character interaction and the pacing were on point from start to finish. My eyes stayed glued to every page, never once missing a beat. The supporting cast was just as entertaining as the lead protagonists. I was literally clutching on to my stomach while I erupted in rowdy laughter. There is no better feeling than getting to swoon and laugh all at the same time. Oh em gee, the shenanigans that Madeleine and Adam would find themselves in! One of the BEST! I can’t possibly end this review without mentioning Mouse, Madeleine’s puppy. That adorable monster who was the catalyst to this whole story line. I promise, you won’t finish this book without falling in love with him just as equally as his humans. If you are in the market for an easy breezy read with tons of laugh out loud humor and a full cast that is wonderfully hilarious then look no more! The Foxe and The Hound is THE PERFECT poolside/inside/wherever-side summer read.
