King Devil Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 137 ratings

A historical mystery set in early twentieth-century New England from the acclaimed author of the Peter Shandy series.

Upon graduating from an academy for respectable young ladies, Lavinia Tabard heads to the New England countryside and her rich cousin Zilpha’s summer cottage with the low expectations of a charity case. Lavinia intends to endure Zilpha’s saccharine sweetness and her “companion” Tetsy’s bullying ways only until she can plan an escape that doesn’t involve marriage.

A welcome distraction comes when, as she works on a grave rubbing at the local cemetery, Lavinia notices something strange about the dates on the stone. Her questions lead to the doorsteps of several interesting neighbors, including a self-made young architect with a temper as fiery as his red hair. Hayward Clinton and his partner have an office on Zilpha’s property, an awkward situation that won’t change until the mysterious disappearance of the business’s original owner is solved. It’s a case too curious for Lavinia to resist—but someone will stop at nothing to ensure that she does.

King Devil is an entertaining tale of suspense from the acclaimed author of the Peter Shandy Mysteries, as well as the Boston-set Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn series.

I am a longtime fan of Charlotte MacLeod, but there are books by her I've still yet to discover. King Devil was one such book and is now one of my favorites. It lacks the humor present in her later series, but I enjoyed the characters she created and the situation in which they found themselves. The book ended too soon for me. I wanted to keep reading about Lavinia and the "ginger cat."

Set in early 20th century rural New England, this novel finds Lavinia Tabard unhappily arriving to spend the summer with her wealthy guardian at the guardian’s new summer home. Lavinia wants independence, not a life under the thumb of her sweetly overbearing relative and her hostile companion. As she seeks escape, Lavinia uncovers some curious facts about the disappearance of the previous owner of her guardian’s home and becomes involved with a pair of young architects who took over the missing man’s business. Mystery, danger, and romance ensue in this story that features well-drawn characters, a well-defined historical setting, and decent mystery plot. Readers familiar with the author’s Shandy and Kelling mysteries, which are characterized by madcap characters and loads of comical situations and humorous dialog, will find this novel’s tone relatively serious in comparison. That doesn’t prevent it from being an enjoyable read.

This charming little mystery stars one of the most spirited "poor relations" I've come across. Lavinia is constitutionally incapable of letting sleeping dogs lie, especially when they're emitting a suspicious stench, and after moving in with her nauseatingly sainted cousin, Lav eventually blows the lid off secrets that have festered far too long. Includes sometimes hilarious and acute characterizations.

Entertaining. Her later books were much better.

I am a fan of Macleod's Sarah Kelling mysteries, but not many of her other series and they are a little too wacky. This was wonderful though--as are most of her stand-alones.

If you haven't yet discovered Charlotte MacLeod's single title mysteries, you're in for a treat. She is a good plotter, her story lines are not easy to guess. Her characters are well drawn and fleshed out.

King Devil is a bit of a departure as it takes place in an earlier time. When females had less rights and women of a certain class were not expected or allowed to work. Read Lavinia's story, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

The only reason I didn't give this book five stars has to do with a plot divice which I can't go into without spoiling it for you.

I very much enjoy Charlotte MacLeod's other books. This is a one off and rather on the light side, but it kept my attention and I did enjoy the story. I'm only giving it 4 stars because it really is only a bit of fluff when all is said and done.
