Pastor and writer Rich Wilkerson Jr. shines a spotlight on every Christian’s calling to reach the world, seek the lost, and save sinners with Jesus’ scandalous message of the gospel of grace.
In Friend of Sinners, we learn:
- that by following his example, we can have the same clear conviction and compassion for the lost that he did,
- that His gospel of scandalous grace cannot be overestimated, and
- How to embrace the truth that we all need Jesus equally.
The Bible calls Jesus a friend of sinners. What does that mean? In Friend of Sinners, Rich Wilkerson Jr. shows readers the profound implications of the reality that Jesus calls us “friends, not because of who we are or what we have done, but because of who he is. While he was on earth, Jesus knew that people needed to feel like they belong before they would want to behave. He understood that the power within him was greater than the darkness around him, so he loved fearlessly.

However, I do believe that this book leaves out some important information in regards to friendship with Christ. For example, Jesus told His disciples: “You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.” It seems that a book about Jesus’ friendship would include the only instance when He shares how to be His friend. I don’t disagree that Jesus was a friend of sinners, but He’s not a friend of sinners in the ultimate sense of the word. He’s a friend of sinners in the sense that He is friendly and kind and loving toward sinners. But He’s not friends with sinners in the sense that He walks through life closely with them. He gladly will, don’t get me wrong. He quickly turns sinners into saints. He is friendly towards sinners but the saints are His friends. I think that’s an important difference to understand.
It also needs to be understood that the Bible tells us not to associate with a person that calls themselves a Christian but lives a lifestyle contrary to what Jesus calls us to—not even to eat with such a person. Now that sounds harsh, but it’s absolutely biblical. It’s fine for us to eat with, talk with, and reason with someone who does not claim to be a Christian who lives in sin, but, if someone claims to be a Christian, yet lives in sexual immorality, greed, drunkenness, etc, the Bible teaches us to avoid such a person. Of course, if we see a brother or sister falling into sin, we need to lovingly rebuke them. But if they won’t hear us, we aren’t to be their friend. Jesus certainly isn’t a friend with that person. The Bible specifically states that a friend of the world is an enemy of God.
Like I said, lots of good in this book. But since the book is on friendship, it probably should have included the more challenging passages that deal with friendship. They are beautiful passages that could have fit well into this book and would have challenged the readers pursue holiness on a deeper level.
also, i am sometimes hesitant to read books from pastors because a lot of times it seems like they are trying to force their beliefs or appear that they are “higher” than you. with rich wilkerson jr., it is so clearly NOT the case. he understands that he is just another human like you & me, and simply talks about the love of Jesus!!
here i go, off to read it again for round 2! this time i’m gonna dissect it with my Bible next to me :)
