Good Times of Badly Behaved Women: A Hot Flash Sisters Novel Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

A fictional, little bit true, story of sisters before misters, a hilarious look at friendship and a daring observation on the paradoxes of love.
And yes—that IS a warning label on the cover: Not to be Read by Women with Delicate Sensibilities!

Best friends Lydia and Cora seem to have the perfect lives. Both are successful lawyers in a high-end law firm. Cora has a husband and two children, and Lydia is happily married to her career.
But their less-than-perfect lives meet a crossroads when Lydia's high-profile case against the Tobacco Coalition hits a bump: Lydia is caught smoking, and there are pictures to prove it. Her career and her multi-million dollar retainer are threatened and she has no choice but to take a sabbatical while the smoke clears. Displaced from her midwestern city, Lydia ends up teaching and fundraising for a university in Bath, England.
Cora's life is nearly unbearable as she watches her marriage crumble because of neglect. Her husband is on cruise control and her teenage kids think of her as the one who gives them clean clothes and rides hither and yon. All of this leads Cora to purchasing a five-foot-tall programmable Santa to send her husband some necessary messages. When she finally decides to orally surprise her sleeping husband, she ends up with a accidental kick to the face and a trip to the ER. Something has to change.
For Lydia, teaching and fundraising are boring as hell and the loneliness starts to get to her. She takes up with a man twenty years younger, calling him Pretty Boy. Then she takes up with a man her age and soon realizes that what he wants is much more than what she is willing to give. She ends up back in the arms of Pretty Boy only to find that she may be falling in love.
Cora visits Lydia in England, which helps Cora temporarily clear her head, but she still manages to get kicked out of Madame Tussaud's after a run-in with the wax Royal Family and the real David Beckham. Cora eventually returns to the states and begins to face the truth about her unhappiness.
Meanwhile, accepting her role in Bitches Anonymous, Lydia makes a multi-million dollar deal to save her hide. But that deal costs her more than she could ever imagine. She knows she must do something to make amends, and to mend her broken heart.
In the end, the women realize what they lost, what they gained, and that they will survive.
Which parts are fiction and which are true? Only the author knows for sure (and she's not telling.)

While reading "Good Times of Badly Behaved Women," I laughed so hard at times people around me looked at me oddly. I loved the relationship between Lydia and Cora-they are relatable on so many levels. Their flawed, vivacious personalities appeal to me-or anyone, really-on a deeper level. I want to be them, sort of, because of smart-mouthed attitude toward life.

The writing of this novel is so witty and entertaining. It delves deeply into the characters' emotional life and presents the challenges of love, work, and friendship for two women living in the U.S. and in the UK. I had the privilege of reading the author's screenplay adaptation, as well, and I loved that too!

I took my time reading this book so that I could thoroughly enjoy and embrace the characters whom in so many ways are much like all modern women today.

Download this book. Read it. Laugh out loud. Soak up the enduring friendship of Lydia and Cora that survives an ocean and some truly cockamamie situations.

Hilarious book! A great summer read. I loved Lydia and Cora; those strong, intelligent, independent women.
