- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2020As I've said in several other reviews, this entire series is fantastic, but this one is especially good, and it deals with the beautiful and cleanly proportioned British Atlantics. Loads of great photographs and an equally impressive amount of history and information. This is a superbly done book about a subject that certainly deserves the attention. If you love vintage steam, this book is guaranteed to please and entertain.

1.0 out of 5 stars A very poor overpriced book.
A very disappointing book, extremely badly edited - some sentences duplicated, captions to photos simply repeat main text, most photos undate or no location. Some photo captions are facile: p.101 - "No.39 seen here festooned with Royal train locomotive regalia" without telling us the date or which Royalty are visiting us (one has to assume the loco will head a boat train); p104 - "Here the crisp, clean, elegant lines of the front end of fourth Brighton Atlantic (No.40) are shown to good effect" is the caption for a perfectly focussed, head-on shot of No.40 - simply stating the obvious but not telling the reader why the lamp irons are set with two discs and three lamps. Two chapters devoted to the H1 and H2 Atlantics occupy 40 pages of this 176 page book. The rest are devoted USA Atlantics, the formation of the LBSCR, Brighton loco works, GNR Atlantics, Pullman trains and the Bluebell Railway present day build of "Beach Head". The author seems not to know the difference between driving and coupled wheels. Photographs would have been preferable to the colour paintings (presumably made from photos).
If I saw this book in a book shop and was able to browse, no way would I have bought it. Jeremy English's "LBSCR Atlantics" Ian Allan 2014 is VASTLY superior and a deal cheaper.
