STARRED REVIEW "New and experienced dog owners will find terrific tools to ensure success in behavior and training. Perfect for new dog 'parents.'"―Library Journal, Library Journal

"From specific issues to general good manners, the author breaks each task into three steps: before you start, troubleshooting, and tip. Then she gets right down to business with written instructions and accompanying photos that show what she’s talking about. Lots of good stuff, including doggie behaviors that seem weird but are actually quite natural."―

Hi, I'm Kyra Sundance; award-winning and internationally bestselling author. My books have over a million copies in print in 22 languages. My company has certified over 20,000 successfully trained dogs.

I'm super excited to tell you about my newest book. "Dog Training 101" is the book I wrote for my mother. It's not full of tedious, time-intensive training--instead, it gives you simple tactics for managing real-world problems. You'll learn basic commands such as "come," "go to your spot," and "drop it." You'll teach your dog to walk on a leash without pulling, to establish room boundaries that your dog is not allowed to cross, and teach your dog respect for children and animal family members. You'll learn how to correctly address your dog's fear and aggression issues, using humane counter-conditioning and positive redirection. "Dog Training 101" will alleviate your frustration and help you have that great relationship with your dog that you always wanted.

Material appears great
The content inside the book appears great. However the company that put the book together did a horrible job. The first book came in with pages stuck like this very often. I returned and a replacement arrived. Same thing just not as much. I literally have to take scissors and cut the pages to read the material throughout the book. Many pages not just a handful. Whoever put the book together needs to do better. The content inside appears great. Would have give a 5/5 but because of pages not separated in many spots I’d say 4/5.

I want to preface this by saying I have a very large collection of dog training books and DVDs. I've got all the "right" titles by Jean Donaldson, Pat Miller, Suzanne Clothier, Karen Pryor, Sophia Yin, Ian Dunbar, Grisha Stewart, Nicole Wilde, and many less recognizable, but equally insightful authors-trainers. As a dog lover, hobbyist-trainer and shelter volunteer, I have benefited immensely from all these authors. They're great for a reading audience that consists of trainer-colleagues, and dog nerds. However...

One of the unfortunate tendencies many authors tend to partake in is that they are unable to be concise and they are unable to avoid talking the science --- to the point of being less accessible to a casual dog owner (which is over 95% of all people with dogs). When I help people modify unwanted behaviors, I can't hand them a book by most of the authors whom I've mentioned above because they are just too verbose and unable to break things down into an attractive, well presented 1-2-3-4 style of presentation. It's 2017. Presentation matters.

Kyra Sundance, on the other hand, gets it. Se realizes that for the average person, too much info is too much info. She understands the need for outstanding photos and graphic design. She understands the need for brevity and leaving out all the science and theory. She understand the need for making it not feel like research and homework.

While some of her titles are too advanced and too much along the lines of "Why would I teach my dog a party tricks?", this one here is gold. If you are a new dog owner or an owner who suspects that you can enrich your life with your dog by teaching your dog and engaging your dog with games, this book will easily exceed your expectations and prove to be the most useful one that you can get. Despite the title, it's about more than just training. It's also about how to make life-with-dogs work well.

The dog training world needs more people like Kyra, who are ridiculously accomplished in her abilities to train, yet willing to keep teach without trying to impress colleagues with high brow assertions and clinically presented science. Kyra is basically the clean-conscienced, relationship-centered, force-free, and fun-loving trainer whom all trainers, small-town and TV-successful, could learn a lot from.

There were a few things here I found the need to bookmark and save for later. I think this book is much improved from her earlier training books.

I appreciate the step by step instructions with pictures. Some things I felt were done in a manner that was overly complex. There was also some nutritional misinformation.

However, the no corrections attitude definitely rubbed me the wrong way. I found many of the things done to be unnecessary in situations where a correction would be helpful. However, I find it helpful to read force free books on occasion.

I bought this as it looked great, however I have preferred to go on YouTube and search for training there. I found a great channel ‘Dog Training with Kikopup.’ I do look in the book occasionally but I end up going to YouTube instead in the end as there’s not much depth.

Now I wish I hadn’t bought the book and wasted my money.
