- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2013Ever since I was a young boy I've been a fan of books and movies that have dealt with time travel--thanks in no small part to H.G. Wells' The Time Machine and television's The Time Tunnel. I've always been fascinated with the "what ifs" of time travel and how history could be changed if one were to travel back in time and interact with people and events in another time.
There are plenty of these "what ifs" in Larry Deibert's brilliant time travel story, The Other Side of the Ridge. The neat thing about a book or movie about time travel is that it's easy for us to suspend our disbelief with the mere concept of time travel which allows us to focus on the story and all the twists and angles that the story has for us. That's what happens in Deibert's story when we are transported back in time with Dan Rodin who ends up in Robert E. Lee's army a few days before the battle of Gettysburg. It's a fascinating story, filled with all sorts of plot twists. Deibert is masterful in his storytelling as the impending battle nears and we wonder how Rodin will impact the outcome of this battle and whether or not he will be able to return to the present time. To be sure, it is hard to put this one down once you start reading.
Whether you are fan of time travel or a student of history, you are going to love the tale that Deibert weaves.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2020A very difficult read.
While steeped in history with interesting characters, this book had problems that at several points made me want to toss the book in the recycle bin.
On the story side, there were miscounting of characters, "experts" who were unaware of the equipment their organization used, one chapter out of order (making the story even more disjointed than most time travel stories), and many happy coincidences (e.g., "my friend just happens to be an expert on time travel!").
One the mechanical side, there's misplaced quotes, missing punctuation, whole conversations repeated, and all the other things that occur when the editors are friends & family. Checking the author's amazon bio, he has 14 books to his name. Is the author's goal is quantity over quality? I will skip reading this book's sequel.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2014Larry Deibert has a way of writing fascinating stories, so I was not surprised when this one grabbed me from page one and held me enthralled until the suspenseful climax.
I have always been intrigued by time travel stories and Larry Deibert has written a compelling variation on going back to the past. In this case, the Civil War. I love the way the author blends fact with fiction in such an entertaining way. The Civil War was a sad and yet thought-provoking period of history which is brought to life in this novel.
I would highly recommend this book to history buffs, time travel enthusiasts, or anyone who just appreciates a great story with likable characters. The Other Side Of The Ridge is an excellent book.
