A biracial girl of divorced parents must navigate two different homes—and the dangers outside them—in this “timely but genuine” novel (Publishers Weekly).

For eleven-year-old Isabella, splitting her time between her parents’ homes feels like living two different lives. One week she’s Izzy, living in a modest house with her mom. The next week she’s Isabella, living with her dad in a fancy house where they are one of the only black families in the neighborhood. But Isabella is starting to realize that she’s not just switching between houses, nicknames, and backpacks. She’s also switching between identities.

When her parents both get engaged at the same time, Isabella doesn’t just feel divided, she feels ripped in two. What does it mean to be half white or half black? To belong to half mom and half dad? And if you’re only seen as half of this and half of that, how can you ever feel whole?

It seems like nothing can bring Isabella’s family together again—until the worst thing happens. Isabella and Darren are stopped by the police. A cell phone is mistaken for a gun. And shots are fired.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-Eleven-year-old Isabella is biracial; her mother is white and her father is black. Other people sometimes describe her as "exotic," but she doesn't think of herself that way. Isabella is also from a blended family. Her mother, a waitress at Waffle House, has a serious boyfriend, a white guy who drives a truck, manages a bowling alley, and has dozens of interesting tattoos. Her father is a successful corporate attorney who drives a Mercedes and has a serious girlfriend, who is black, an interior decorator with a son that Isabella is looking forward to having for a big brother. Her parents share custody and each Sunday they meet at the mall and do "the exchange." Mostly, it's done curtly, without talking, so Isabella "hates, hates, hates it." She finds solace in playing the piano and practicing for a big recital. Shifting between two sets of parents, no matter how much she cares about them and how different their lifestyles are, is hard. As new tensions begin to rise, Isabella works to find her place in the world. Draper has a way of speaking to the heart of tween concerns. The dialogue is realistic and the alternating chapters between Isabella's time with her mom and dad underscores the protagonist's discomfort moving back and forth between them. The story could have ended there and worked well as a frank, honest portrait of a modern, blended family. But a dangerous, racially biased event near the end of the novel offers a deeper exploration of the unique struggles faced by young people of color. While the event is disturbing, Draper writes with grace, compassion, and respect for the intelligence and emotional lives of young readers. VERDICT This is Draper at her best, penning a current and ultimately uplifting story. It deserves a place on library shelves along with her other outstanding works.-Carol Connor, Cincinnati Public Schools, OHα(c) Copyright 2011. Draper writes with grace, compassion, and respect for the intelligence and emotional lives of young readers.... This is Draper at her best, penning a current and ultimately uplifting story. (School Library Journal, starred review)

Isabella's genuine 11-year-old voice captures events rarely seen in middle-grade fiction but too often seen by actual middle graders. (Kirkus Reviews, starred review )

Horrific Book

Horrific Book
Very hurtful book, I wish I could give less than one star.Shame on the publisher, Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books. The book is suggesting ages 8-12 but should be suggested to a much older demographic. In the final chapter the protagonist, 11 yo Isabella is accused of robbing a bank and is shot by a white police officer. I understand this is a real possibility for a small number of people but not for an 11 yo girl. My 9yo daughter ran into my room after reading the part where Isabella was shot, in tear and shaking. This book spews racism towards whites and I can’t understand how the it received such good reviews. It is concerning where this society is headed.

This book is beautifully written. Perfectly worded and truly heartfelt. It attacks some of the situations my 4 children specifically deal with daily. This book has brought up opportunities for conversations and questions for our kiddos to become more natural and openly discussed, not just at home. I found it on accident but I'm so grateful I did. We are a very blended family of many colors and step -'s and adopted's. I of course read this book before letting my children and it addressed so many things that I over look or don't think on as much myself being white and an adult. When my daughter read it it touched her and made her more confident in her reactions to being questioned by peers. It truly has made a change in our family. Her brother also read it and I can't wait for the littlest little to be old enough to read it. I would give this book 10 stars If I could and we are ALL looking forward to finding more from this author.

This book was so amazing because it focused on the journey of a little girl struggling to find herself in the midst of her parents divorce. Having the perspective of a child thrown to the center of the story and describing the very real struggles with identity as a mixed race child with the complication of who she is in different environments helps connect with students. The innocence of the character and the situations she deals with make her journey a must read.

My daughter is also a mixed child and is currently going through similar struggles as the girl in book. I’m so grateful that there was a book like “Blended” for her to relate to.
